Many candidates in November’s General Election promised change, but the residents of Ypsilanti will see real change start tonight at 6 pm. Libertarians Tom Bagwell and Larry Johnson will begin to serve their terms on the Charter Township of Ypsilanti Park Commission.

“The people of Ypsilanti will join the thousands of people across Michigan who have elected Libertarians to local office,” said Bill Hall, State
Chairman of the Libertarian Party of Michigan.  He continued, “When given the chance, Libertarians make a big difference, and are well supported in
their community.” Hall also noted that many of President-elect Barack Obama’s supporters
have already become disillusioned about his promise of change as he has announced former Clinton officials and Freddie Mac officers for key roles in his administration.

“While anyone can promise change,” Hall said, “it
is the Libertarian Party that has better ideas- from the national economy to our local parks.  The people of Ypsilanti have chosen two great people
to help lead their community.”

The Ypsilanti Park Commission will meet from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on December 8th. Meetings are held in the 1st floor conference room of the Ypsilanti Township Civic Center, located at 7200 S. Huron River Drive.

Jackson , MI – A bill pending in the Michigan Legislature was the subject of a resolution that was approved at this year’s Libertarian Party of Michigan Convention.  The resolution, proposed by 2008 United States Senate candidate Scotty Boman, read:

We support SCR004 of 2009 and HCR0004 of 2009, which have been introduced in the Michigan legislature.  These resolutions affirm the sovereignty of Michigan, and its residents, under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, and urge the federal government to halt its practice of imposing mandates upon the states for purposes not enumerated by the Constitution of the United States.

Boman said, “Our platform already affirms an interpretation of the Tenth Amendment that strictly limits the powers of the federal government to those enumerated in the Constitution.  Platform resolutions, however, deal with current events and legislation.  This legislation is needed because our federal government routinely exceeds its legal authority, as defined in its own Constitution.  For instance, they arrest people who comply with their state’s medical marijuana laws, though the Constitution only permits them to regulate commerce between states, not commerce within a state.”

HCR0004 was introduced to the State House by Representative Paul Opsommer on January 22nd.  State Senator Patterson, along with Senators Richardville, Brown, Cropsey and Sanborn, submitted SCR004 to the State Senate on March 3rd.

The Libertarian Party of Michigan held its annual convention on Saturday, May 23rd, in Jackson at the Commonwealth Commerce Center.

The Libertarian Party of Michigan is the third largest political party in the state. Last November it ran 85 candidates who garnered over 1.7 million votes, with two people elected. Libertarians promote policies that support economic growth, lower taxes, and personal freedom and responsibility.

Donny Ferguson from the national LP has e-mailed everyone on the national list a link to the Libertarian Party Responsible Legislator Pledge

It’s one simple question for your congressman or senator — will you sign your name to a promise not to vote for any federal health care bill you haven’t read in full, understand?

This is intended to help our federal candidates in 2010.  If our opponent refuses to sign it, they are admitting they don’t read major legislation before they vote on it.  If they sign it, they are now personally responsible for every aspect of the bill.  They can’t claim they didn’t know it outlawed private insurance.

Please let your federal candidates for next year know about the Pledge, available at LP.org.  It is there to give them an issue to beat up their opponent next year.

“All Libertarian All the Time” News Source Launched

October 19, 2009

The new Libertarian News Examiner web page quietly “went live” over the weekend with the publication of three explicitly libertarian news articles.

Content for the new libertarian news source is developed and written independently but is published as part of Examiner.com, an online digital media giant with news outlets in 129 US cities.

The Libertarian News Examiner will feature breaking news stories about the activities and events of libertarian organizations and individuals from around the country.

“The whole concept is a two-way street,” says Garry Reed, developer of the project. “Libertarians send in article ideas and photos of their events, I develop them into news features and publish them on Examiner where our fellow libertarians can see what’s going on and then respond with their own contributions.”

The first few articles were picked up by Google News, which spreads the libertarian message into the mainstream, meaning that libertarians won’t just be “preaching to the choir.”

Reed, a longtime libertarian writer and “opinionizer” has been writing libertarian commentary, op-eds, and freelance articles for nearly 10 years, and is currently writing the Dallas Libertarian Examiner as an independent contractor for Examiner.com

“My goal is to create the biggest and best nationwide libertarian go-to news source on the internet,” Reed proclaims. “But I can’t do it by myself. The more contributors we have, the more readers we have, the more success we’ll have. It’s really just that simple.”

A page on Reed’s personal website, The Loose Cannon Libertarian, has been set up with details for individual libertarians and organizations who want to publicize their events or just contribute article ideas and photos:

Libertarian Party of Michigan response to Supreme Court ruling

Article:
The Libertarian Party of Michigan applauds the recent Supreme Court decision in the Citizens United case that strikes down certain campaign finance laws outlawing political activity by corporations or unions. Libertarians believe campaign finance laws are restrictions on free speech and should be repealed.  They recognize that individual rights to political speech also pertain to groups of individuals however they may be associated.  “Besides,” as Libertarian Party of Michigan State Chair Emily Salvette noted, “campaign finance laws are just symptoms of ‘Big Government’ disease.” Her suggestion: “Shrink government back to its Constitutional limits so it isn’t interfering in the economy. Then business and unions won’t bother buying politicians’ support with campaign spending.”

Taxpayers Against Waste
by Leonard Schwartz, Leonard@LeonardSchwartz.us

Fred Collins and Leonard Schwartz created an Oakland County ballot question committee — Taxpayers Against Waste. It will oppose ballot questions that increase waste and support ballot questions that reduce waste.

TAW’s first project is opposing a $168 million ($430 million including interest) bond proposal in the Berkley School District, which includes Berkley, Huntington Woods, and northern Oak Park. It will be on the ballot on Tuesday, Feb. 23. The website for this project is www.BerkleySchoolTax.com.

Please support Taxpayers Against Waste
TAW will do a literature drop on a date to be determined. To volunteer for the literature drop, contact Fred Collins, Fred@BerkleyLine.com.

Contributions should be mailed to:
Taxpayers Against Waste
13711 Victoria
Oak Park MI 48237-1409

Corporations and other businesses can contribute money to ballot question committees. Because taxes affect profitability, businesses can deduct contributions to TAW as business expenses.
