Welcome

[main]
Welcome to the May 2013 issue of the online newsletter of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, the Michigan Libertarian. The newsletter is our main vehicle for sharing what's happening for Libertarians in Michigan. You may manage your subscription by going here or visiting our Web site www.mi.lp.org (same as www.michiganlp.org).

From the Chair

http://old.michiganlp.org/Pictures/Denee.jpgDenee Rockman-Moon
chair@michiganlp.org

This is an exciting time for the LP of Michigan. First I want to thank each of you individually for all your hard work and volunteerism to the party. Here are my items for this month's newsletter:

  • The Gary Johnson visit to Hillsdale College, April 2—the event was a fabulous success, as Gary Johnson and Judge Jim Gray came to Hillsdale College to keep the dream moving forward.
  • The LPM Convention in Grand Rapids, June 15—We expect a great convention in June; for those coming in on Friday afternoon, consider joining us for a West Michigan Whitecaps baseball game. As Mary Buzuma reports below.
  • Our Andy LeCureaux is now on the National LP Platform Committee—Andy LeCureaux has accepted the position of representing Michigan on the 2014 national platform committee. Andy served on the national platform committee back in 2006 and served on the committee that reviewed the LPM Platform outside of convention around ten years ago. In addition, Andy is one of our party’s elected officials, serving on the Hazel Park City Council. Thank you, Andy for taking on this task for the Michigan Party.
  • Southwest LPM Affiliate Changes—It is with sadness to say that back in February Bill Bradley Chair of the Southwestern affiliate struggled with the decision of closing their doors. Bill was an active member within the southwest area for over 15 years. So, please help me in letting Bill know how much his efforts were appreciated wbradley@i2k.com. One William Holden (sic) [williamkholden@gmail.com] has stepped up as a volunteer to reboot the Southwest affiliate; he would like to hear from those interested in joining him.
  • Livingston County LPM Affiliate Changes—We would like to give a huge, “Thank you”, to Pam and Ron Sanderson of Livingston County. Pam and Ron have were just notified recently by their employer that their jobs are moving to Texas. They have decided to move their family with the company, which will leave Michigan with a great Liberty loss. Ron and Pam have been a large part of the Libertarian movement and they will be truly missed! Texas Libertarians are going to be very happen to have them. Also, check out the new LivingstonLibertarians.org Website that was designed by Tim Keirnan and built by Tobby Smith of Lansing.
  • Speaking of Livingston County, if you live there, please consider supporting the candidacy of Libertarian Mike Brennan, who is running in a special election on August 6 to fill a vacancy on the Livingston County Commission. Article by Donna Gundle-Krieg from the aforementioned Website extraordinaire. [Note: the Website template for the LivingstonLibertarians.org site is available for free to any affiliate or candidate that requests it. Simply contact Tim Keirnan for details.

We have also been issuing news releases in a timely fashion on various matters thanks to our media coordinator Steve Mace. The new Website is now in progress, it will use the Wordpress platform. You may watch it being built here (http://www.brianrwright.com/lpm/)—the calendar has been transferred, and affiliate and candidate data are enroute. The goal is to cutover to the new site by a target date of 5/15/13, and a drop dead date of 6/1/13. Suggestions or tips, please contact Webmaster Brian Wright at webmaster@michiganlp.org. [For the near term, we are simply planning to transfer the data and functionality of the old site to the new site, with the more modern and reliable tools now available for Web design. Down the road, we'll try to keep the site in tune with the membership's wishes.]

In Liberty,
Denee

8Platform and Bylaws

A necessary and important part of our state conventions, including the upcoming one in Grand Rapids, is to make any desired changes to the party's platform and bylaws.

From Chris Sharer, Chairman of the Platform Committee: The platform committee consists of all of those that submitted a change or commented on one. The consensus thus far is to trade emails and possibly have one conference call prior to the meeting at convention. Most people said they have some interest but not much time they can commit. Steve Mace, Jim Fulner, and myself have submitted proposals and Scotty Boman sent comments.

Here is my monthly update for the newsletter, which includes all correspondence to date that I was able to compile without a keyboard, monitor, or Internet access: The 2013 LPM platform committee seeks your participation and input. Please contact Christopher.Sharer@gmail.com to sign up for the committee and/or submit changes for consideration. Platform committee correspondence so far is located in this pdf file I've uploaded to the site: http://www.michiganlp.org/Webpages_Aux/2013/PlatCorr_April2013.pdf

With the advent of the 24/7 US national terror state this is THE YEAR for the Libertarian Party Platform... both nationally and in Michigan. We need your input to stand up as an organization by speaking out against and confronting the frightening range of injustices that threaten "our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." Is this the year our platforms become a DECLARATION!?

From Jim Fulner, Chairman of the Bylaws Committee:

The 2013 LPM convention is approaching more quickly than one may think. Is there something you think the LPM could be doing better than it currently is? The by-laws govern the day-to-day operations of the Party, while the convention rules govern specific rules beyond or in lieu of Robert's Rules of Order (our current parliamentary authority per the by-laws). Our current by-laws can be found here.

The committee will need at least a few Libertarians in order to present member recommendations to the floor. The committee will need to meet at least twice prior to the convention, first via teleconference then later either in person or again via teleconference per the decision of the committee. Jim Fulner has been selected as chair of this committee by the LEC. If you are interested in serving on this committee—or if you simply want to submit changes—please send an e-mail to fulner@gmail.com.

Young Americans for Liberty Sponsor Badnarik Constitution Class

[main]
1 Day Constitution Class presented by Michael Badnarik
When: Saturday June 1, 2013, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Where: Schoolcraft College,
Vista Tech Building, Room 460, 18600 Haggerty Rd., Livonia, Michigan 48152
Details: https://www.facebook.com/events/315798101879299/

"If you do not assert your rights, you have no rights. To assert your rights, you must know them."

Young Americans for Liberty is proud to present Constitutional scholar, Michael Badnarik to southeast Michigan for this one day event. The class will be held at Schoolcraft College (Vista Tech Building, Room 460) on Saturday, June 1st from 9am-6pm. Doors open at 8am.  Price for the event is $150.00 or four ounces of silver bullion, checks to be made out to Constitution Preservation Trust.

Wayne County C4L will provide a light lunch. Additionally Michigan Campaign for Liberty will be hosting a fundraiser "after party" at the Token Lounge (Token Lounge 28949 Joy Road Westland Michigan 48185) from 7 pm-11 pm  with live music beginning at 9:30pm.  Wayne County C4L signup location is here: www.mic4lconstitutionclass.eventbrite.com. At this early stage (and because this notice is a last-minute addition to the Michigan Libertarian) the exact requirements or recommended voluntary barter fees, deposit requirements, signup process, etc. for the event/lunch/afterparty are unclear... to the Michigan Libertarian editor. Best policy is probably to go to the Facebook page or to the Wayne County C4L page for this event and ask questions.

From those who have attended Mr. Badnarik's class in the past, the response is overwhelmingly positive. To learn more about Michael Badnarik and his Constitution education program, you can visit his website here. YAL and C4L are extremely enthusiastic about this rare opportunity to learn from one of the best.

Calling all graphic designers!! The LPM is looking for your help in designing a new logo for the state Party. We are looking for something fresh and new to help get the word out to voters that the LPM is the future. While there are no specific requirements, we are hoping for submissions that are modern, but that hold true to the traditions of the LPM. Please send your submissions to media@michiganlp.org. The winner will be selected by the membership at the state convention on June 15th.

10 Mistakes Libertarians Make
Richard Lorenc, August 21, 2012
richard.lorenc@gmail.com
[Note this article is totally in line with the New Year's resolutions—from Harry Browne (LP presidential candidate 1996 and 2000)—we've been running in this spot; the idea is for LPMers to take a page out of the Dale Carnegie book and start winning friends and influencing people rather than resurrecting the Late Great Libertarian Macho Flash approach to prospects. (How many out there in Michigan Libertarian Land remember Michael Emerling's (now Michael Cloud) classic presentation, The Art of Political Persuasion?]

10 Mistakes Libertarians Make When Speaking to “Undiscovered Libertarians”

  1. Replying to a concern, “The market will handle it.” This tired phrase is like a crutch for free marketeers. For many of us, it’s like our last line of defense when we expect to deal a winning blow and have no backup when it fails. The only time you should say this is as a joke to your libertarian friends.
  2. Blurting, “XYZ doesn’t matter.” Just because we don’t think government should do a thing doesn’t mean we don’t think that thing doesn’t need to be done. We should never give them impression someone’s concern is unimportant. Mind your words carefully.
  3. Using jargon. Most people have never thought conceptually about the spontaneous order. Quoting passages from The Fatal Conceit in a casual political conversation won’t plant the seeds of a true believer.
  4. Being cliquey. We tend to hang out with people who “get” us and who “get” what we’re talking about. The problem is we sometimes make libertarianism seem like an exclusive club that only certain people can join. Welcome the newbies. We need them.
  5. Acting holier-than-thou. Libertarians are overly convinced that our consistency and principle are superior. Truthfully, we each have many things to learn and we’re each inconsistent in our beliefs and actions. Libertarianism may be better than any alternative political philosophy, but it’s not perfect, so speak humbly.
  6. Telling people not to vote. This is an important question, but telling a Republican or Democrat activist that their vote doesn’t matter is like telling someone their work at the homeless shelter is worthless. People put time into causes in which they believe and don’t appreciate you implying their efforts don’t matter.
  7. Raising your voice. Someone said the reason we shout during arguments is because we lack confidence in what we’re saying. Avoid saying things you only just heard and didn’t take the time to verify. You’ll find your tone of voice becomes a lot friendlier and your arguments become a lot stronger.
  8. Thinking you’ve heard it all. U of I professor Deirdre McCloskey explains: “Over the front door of the late-medieval city hall in the Dutch city of Gouda is the motto of the first modern economy, the first large society in which commerce and innovation instead of state regulation and social status were honored. It says, Audite et alteram partem—Listen even to the other side. It’s good advice for a society of the bourgeoisie, and for a classroom for students of philosophy.” And it’s good advice for libertarians.
  9. Calling anyone a statist. Few people know what that means, and unless you’re arguing with a Stalinist, nothing constructive ever comes from using the term. Most people will walk away believing you insulted them. Use “statist” at your own peril.
  10. Digging in. Stay loose. Politics is the art of the possible. If you want to play, prepare to negotiate the things you value least for those you value the most.

Background Checks vs. Registration

Currently gun-grabbers are advocating Federal registration schemes while misrepresenting them as background checks. This dangerous policy is being supported by both major parties in the Senate who chose to silence any planned filibusters against it. Background checks are fundamentally different from registration.

Background checks simply involve verifying a purchaser’s eligibility to buy a gun. Registration involves keeping records of who owns which guns. The registration plan being put forth by Senators Joe Manchin and Pat Toomey would require maintaining records of all firearm transactions.

The purpose of background checks are to prevent illegal gun purchases from law-abiding dealers, but why registration? Registration simplifies confiscation. If at some future date politicians chose to ban certain guns, they already know which law-abiding citizens have that specific type of gun. Simply knowing that the Feds already know one has a gun will prevent the gun owner from holding out when she is asked to hand it over. So can one have background checks without de facto registration? Absolutely!

Next month his column will be on capital punishment.

Quote of the Month
[main]

“Well, honey, it’s like we’re standing behind the clock with our thumbs just ready for the starter’s gun. We can’t talk until the race is over. This we’ve got, we’ve got this hour, this night, this rain, this music. Honey, things aren’t so bad as they actually are if you just accept them.

"You know I remember when I was a little kid, trailin’ my daddy up to the still in those mountain winters… I suppose I knew then that what he was doing was contrary to somebody’s law, but my granddaddy had done it before him, and his daddy before him, and so on clear back to Ireland. They held that what a man did on his own land was his business. They didn’t have any noble notions then, of course, still don’t.

"When they came here, fought for this country, scratched up those hills with their plows and those skinny little mules, they did it to guarantee the basic rights of free men. They just figured that whiskey-making was one of ‘em. I don’t remember anything dark and shameful, I just recollect the dogwoods and laurels and little tags of ice on the ends of ‘em, just snip off clean like that when you brush by ‘em. I was just a little ol’ boy followin’ in my daddy’s footsteps up the mountain."

Lucas Doolin (Robert Mitchum), in the movie Thunder Road (1958)

Petition Watch
via Scotty Boman scottyboman@hotmail.com

Again on March 9, Scotty wrote on Facebook, "Shameful! still hardly anyone has signed this. I am still waiting for my thousands of Facebook friends to explain why they favor summary executions." Scotty is referring to his petition to the Whitehouse of February 13, 2013, stating the following:

obamatonWe the People of the United States of America do not grant our government the power of summary execution of citizens.

1) We the People of the United States of America, naturalized citizens and lawful permanent residents, do not grant permission to our government to execute United States citizens with the use of drones, or via any method contrary to the United States Constitution.

2) We the People of the United States, do not condone our duly elected President(s) possessing a "kill list." Whereas, the President of the United States possesses no such authority, whereas, the Constitution of the United States guarantees the right of trial,

We direct this administration to immediately cease the practice of summary execution on the order of the President of the United States, in the name of the People of the United States.

We the undersigned are appreciative of your immediate attention.

Go to the petition here.

[Petition is no longer active. Perhaps someone can launch a new one. We need a hot celebrity in Hollywood who has the gumption to challenge war crimes, torture, Constitutional violations, etc. Anyone have a candidate? I mean if Charlize Theron or Matt Damon decided to make an issue of summary executions, I'll bet they'd get more signatures than—sorry, Scotty—Scotty Boman, International Man of Intrigue. — Ed. ]

Humor

When we get to thinking there's no hope consider this clever little visual and commentary from Larken Rose via Etienne de la Boetie:

Go to the link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6b70TUbdfs&feature=player_embedded#!, then also read the Coffee Coaster guest column from July 2012, The Politics of Obedience. Get used to the following statement vis a vis the federales: WE MASTER, YOU SLAVE. Say it as many times as it takes for you to believe it. Then tell your friends. It's a numbers game. Movie Review
Life of Pi
(2012)
Rudyard Kipling meets the Dalai Lama _ 9/10

A remarkable experience, this film by Ang Lee. A significant cinematic achievement on several levels, three that I can think of immediately:

  • the exploration of faith and spirituality as it develops in a freethinking Indian boy whose father is an advocate of reason
  • an unusual, gripping adventure story that captures the imagination of young and old alike
  • a technical marvel seamlessly integrating spectacular computer-generated imagery (CGI) with live action

And to top it all off, perhaps the most important quality lies in the story’s tug on the heartstrings as one puts oneself in the shoes of the protagonist at the end. The emotional scale is huge in this resolution, amplified by the fact that the viewer has been through the wringer of a 200+ day ordeal of survival at sea. [Full Review]

Book Review
Libertarian War on Poverty (2012)
Repairing the ladder of upward mobility
by Daniel K. Robin (danatlaw@aol.com)

This is a very good book that deserves to be read… by people inside the freedom movement and out. It’s crisply well-written and the thinking flows strongly and comfortably. Those who are neophytes in economics or who, like me, have little affinity for it, will love the clarity with which it presents solutions to economic problems and subproblems. Poverty is after all an economic issue: not having enough useful stuff to meet one’s needs. The author, through substantial and relevant research, gives us common-sense public policies, that unfortunately are still uncommon. I met the author at the Libertarian Party of Michigan convention in June 2012. Daniel Robin is a Chicago-area attorney and I believe a first-time author, self-published. [Full Review]

About the Michigan Libertarian
[main]

The Michigan Libertarian is published/posted on the first of each month. Send calendar events and news/articles to e-newsletter@michiganlp.org by the 25th of the prior month. The Michigan Libertarian is one of the longest-running Libertarian newsletters in the country, debuting in 1973 shortly after the founding of the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The "new" Michigan Libertarian (a predominantly online version) debuted on August 1, 2009 and replaced the weekly LPMOnline and the printed-and-mailed ML.  We will post the newsletter on the Website and deliver via email on the first of every month. A printed version of the new Michigan Libertarian will be sent free to anyone who signs up, which you may do at the LPM web site www.mi.lp.org (or www.michiganlp.org).

LPM members who need a hard copy may request one be mailed to them by contacting
e-newsletter@michiganlp.org or calling the LPM toll-free number 888-Free-Now.
