Welcome

[main]
Welcome to the April 2013 issue of the online newsletter of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, the Michigan Libertarian. The newsletter is our main vehicle for sharing what's happening for Libertarians in Michigan. You may manage your subscription by going here or visiting our Web site www.mi.lp.org (same as www.michiganlp.org).

From the Chair

http://old.michiganlp.org/Pictures/Denee.jpgDenee Rockman-Moon
chair@michiganlp.org

This is an exciting time for the LP of Michigan. First I want to thank each of you individually for all your hard work and volunteerism to the party. Here are my items for this month's newsletter:

  • The Gary Johnson visit to Hillsdale College, April 2—See writeup immediately following my column.
  • The LPM Convention in Grand Rapids, June 15—See Mary Buzuma's writeup immediately following the writeup on Gary Johnson coming to town.
  • Our Andy LeCureaux is now on the National LP Platform Committee—Andy LeCureaux has accepted the position of representing Michigan on the 2014 national platform committee. Andy served on the national platform committee back in 2006 and served on the committee that reviewed the LPM Platform outside of convention around ten years ago. In addition, Andy is one of our party’s elected officials, serving on the Hazel Park City Council. Thank you, Andy for taking on this task for the Michigan Party.
  • Southwest LPM Affiliate Changes—It is with sadness to say that back in February Bill Bradley Chair of the Southwestern affiliate struggled with the decision of closing their doors. Bill was an active member within the southwest area for over 15 years. So, please help me in letting Bill know how much time, efforts, and dedication was appreciated. However, with the Libertarians growing in numbers daily, we have a volunteer that has stepped up to the plate and has offered to continue the growth in that area. Please let us welcome William Holden to the Michigan affiliate team!
  • Livingston County LPM Affiliate Changes—We would like to give a huge, “Thank you”, to Pam and Ron Sanderson of Livingston County. Pam and Ron have were just notified recently by their employer that their jobs are moving to Texas. They have decided to move their family with the company, which will leave Michigan with a great Liberty loss. Ron and Pam have been a large part of the Libertarian movement and they will be truly missed! Texas Libertarians are going to be very happen to have them.

If you would like to help with Gary Johnson's visit, please contact chair@mi.lp.org or john@cruzweb.net. We have also been issuing news releases in a timely fashion on various matters thanks to our media coordinator Steve Mace. We are still making progress on the new Website, interrupted after the unfortunate loss of Webmaster Brian Wright's mother; barring unforeseen problems, the bulk of our Web operations should be transferred to the new site by May Day.

In Liberty,
Denee

ChristieDiazBanquet Speaker: Christie Diaz
Founder and President of Mommynomics

If you are an entrepreneur, business owner, parent or all of the above, come be inspired, motivated, and driven by: Christie Diaz is a great example of how young female entrepreneurs, business owners, mothers, all of which Christie is; are not only getting involved but also encouraging others to get involved in the call for Liberty and Freedom in America as well. Check out her challenging and eye-opening Facebook videos here: https://www.facebook.com/mommynomics

Christie is a one-woman Liberty-driven machine, just now breaking thru to national (and international) recognition in the liberty movement... and certainly increased awareness by those panic-stricken powersick ones opposed to the liberty movement!

Christie Diaz. Not to be missed!
Come charge your batteries, then go forth and 'charge it forward

8Platform and Bylaws

A necessary and important part of our state conventions, including the upcoming one in Grand Rapids, is to make any desired changes to the party's platform and bylaws.

From Chris Sharer, Chairman of the Platform Committee: The platform committee consists of all of those that submitted a change or commented on one. The consensus thus far is to trade emails and possibly have one conference call prior to the meeting at convention. Most people said they have some interest but not much time they can commit. Steve Mace, Jim Fulner, and myself have submitted proposals and Scotty Boman sent comments.

Here is my monthly update for the newsletter, which includes all correspondence to date that I was able to compile without a keyboard, monitor, or Internet access: The 2013 LPM platform committee seeks your participation and input. Please contact Christopher.Sharer@gmail.com to sign up for the committee and/or submit changes for consideration. Platform committee correspondence so far is located in this pdf file I've uploaded to the site: http://www.michiganlp.org/Webpages_Aux/2013/PlatCorr_April2013.pdf

With the advent of the 24/7 US national terror state this is THE YEAR for the Libertarian Party Platform... both nationally and in Michigan. We need your input to stand up as an organization by speaking out against and confronting the frightening range of injustices that threaten "our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." Is this the year our platforms become a DECLARATION!?

From Jim Fulner, Chairman of the Bylaws Committee:

The 2013 LPM convention is approaching more quickly than one may think. Is there something you think the LPM could be doing better than it currently is? The by-laws govern the day-to-day operations of the Party, while the convention rules govern specific rules beyond or in lieu of Robert's Rules of Order (our current parliamentary authority per the by-laws). Our current by-laws can be found here.

The committee will need at least a few Libertarians in order to present member recommendations to the floor. The committee will need to meet at least twice prior to the convention, first via teleconference then later either in person or again via teleconference per the decision of the committee. Jim Fulner has been selected as chair of this committee by the LEC. If you are interested in serving on this committee—or if you simply want to submit changes—please send an e-mail to fulner@gmail.com.

8Rules of the Freedom Road for 2013

New Year's Resolutions
by Harry Browne (LP presidential candidate 1996 and 2000)
Mr. Browne's resolutions are so fitting, I see no reason to pull them down this year.

  1. I resolve to sell liberty by appealing to the self-interest of each prospect, rather than preaching to people and expecting them to suddenly adopt my ideas of right and wrong.
  2. I resolve to keep from being drawn into arguments or debates. My purpose is to inspire people to want liberty — not to prove that they’re wrong.
  3. I resolve to listen when people tell me of their wants and needs, so I can help them see how a free society will satisfy those needs.
  4. I resolve to identify myself, when appropriate, with the social goals someone may seek — a cleaner environment, more help for the poor, a less divisive society — and try to show him that those goals can never be achieved by government, but will be well served in a free society.
  5. I resolve to be compassionate and respectful of the beliefs and needs that lead people to seek government help. I don’t have to approve of their subsidies or policies — but if I don’t acknowledge their needs, I have no hope of helping them find a better way to solve their problems. No matter what the issue.
  6. I resolve to keep returning to the central point: how much better off the individual will be in a free society.
  7. I resolve to acknowledge my good fortune in having been born an American. Any plan for improvement must begin with a recognition of the good things we have. To speak only of America’s defects will make me a tiresome crank.
  8. I resolve to focus on the ways America could be so much better with a very small government — not to dwell on all the wrongs that exist today.
  9. I resolve to cleanse myself of hate, resentment, and bitterness. Such things steal time and attention from the work that must be done.
  10. I resolve to speak, dress, and act in a respectable manner. I may be the first Libertarian someone has encountered, and it’s important that he get a good first impression. No one will hear the message if the messenger is unattractive.
  11. I resolve to remind myself that someone’s “stupid” opinion may be an opinion I once held. If I can grow, why can’t I help him grow?
  12. I resolve not to raise my voice in any discussion. In a shouting match, no one wins, no one changes his mind, and no one will be inspired to join our quest for a free society.
  13. I resolve not to adopt the tactics of Republicans and Democrats. They use character assassination, evasions, and intimidation because they have no real benefits to offer Americans. We, on the other hand, are offering to set people free — and so we can win simply by focusing on the better life our proposals will bring.
  14. I resolve to be civil to my opponents, and treat them with respect. However anyone chooses to treat me, it’s important that I be a better person than my enemies.

8The Boman Files

Scotty (scottyboman@hotmail.com) has two interesting columns afoot:

Levin Recall Put on Hold

Suttons Bay, MI – Sponsors of an unsuccessful 2012 effort to recall United States Senator Carl Levin were excited to learn of his imminent retirement, and have decided to forgo a renewed petition drive. “On this first day of spring, we had to make a decision.”

Said recall co-organizer Scotty Boman. “We would first need to re-visit the clarity review process, and then circulate the petitions in the summer months. If the petitions survived challenges there would be the scheduling of a special election and court challenges.

Even if we were successful at each step, we wouldn’t cut his term short by much more than a year. Fortunately, it looks like the Senator has taken the hint and done the job for us.” Boman said. The other co-organizer, Warren Raftshol commented, “Levin, in the end, capitulated to our gentle but resolute pressure, and that we should congratulate him for his wise decision to leave quietly.”

Petition Watch
via Scotty Boman scottyboman@hotmail.com

Again on March 9, Scotty wrote on Facebook, "Shameful! still hardly anyone has signed this. I am still waiting for my thousands of Facebook friends to explain why they favor summary executions. So many homicidal cowards." Scotty is referring to his petition to the Whitehouse of February 13, 2013, stating the following:

obamatonWe the People of the United States of America do not grant our government the power of summary execution of citizens.

1) We the People of the United States of America, naturalized citizens and lawful permanent residents, do not grant permission to our government to execute United States citizens with the use of drones, or via any method contrary to the United States Constitution.

2) We the People of the United States, do not condone our duly elected President(s) possessing a "kill list." Whereas, the President of the United States possesses no such authority, whereas, the Constitution of the United States guarantees the right of trial,

We direct this administration to immediately cease the practice of summary execution on the order of the President of the United States, in the name of the People of the United States.

We the undersigned are appreciative of your immediate attention.

Go to the petition here.

[As of 3/30, the number of signatures had climbed to Whoops! It's gone, here's the note from the Whitehouse site: Thanks for your interest in We the People, a new tool on WhiteHouse.gov that allows all Americans to ask the Obama Administration to take action on a range of important issues facing our country. The petition you are trying to access has expired, because it failed to meet the signature threshold. Back to the drawing board. Come on, people, let's get summary execution canned as front page news! Webmaster has some ideas.]

Humor

When we get to thinking there's no hope consider this clever little visual and commentary from Larken Rose via Etienne de la Boetie:

EtiennedelaBoetie

Go to the link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6b70TUbdfs&feature=player_embedded#!, then also read the Coffee Coaster guest column from July 2012, The Politics of Obedience. Get used to the following statement vis a vis the federales: WE MASTER, YOU SLAVE. Say it as many times as it takes for you to believe it. Then tell your friends. It's a numbers game.

Movie Review
Mildred Pierce
(1945)
Fine intelligent movie that breaks barriers _ 9/10

Veda (Ann Blyth), Mildred Pierce’s daughter of a broken marriage, is the original spoiled brat, the princess who seeks to live beyond her means, while holding in contempt those who provide the means. Mildred (Joan Crawford) is the original liberated woman: when her husband loses his job and self-respect, then leaves her for another woman, Mildred busts the hapless Suzy Homemaker image, first, working as a waitress (trying to hide that fact from snooty Veda) and, second, putting together some serious change to open a posh restaurant-bar on the ocean. Book Review
A Noble Lie (2011)
First terror attack on the Heartland…

“And in the months and weeks building up to the Oklahoma City bombing there was incredible conditioning on the news: ‘These people are scared of the federal government they’re terrorists, they’re going to kill you, they’re gonna bomb you, you watch.’ And then you look at the evidence, and sure enough, government and black op fingerprints are all over it. The establishment is going to have trouble orchestrating future atrocities like the Oklahoma City bombing because the public is really getting wise to their tricks. Oklahoma City is one of the best examples we’ve got where we can prove clearly that the official story is a fraud, that the government was involved, and is using it to demonize good Americans.” — Alex Jones [Full Review]
