8Gary Johnson: The Book

Seven Principles of Good Government
Referred by Will White
whitewi5@msu.edu

Seven PrinciplesGary Johnson makes the most consistent and compelling arguments for limited government of any politician on the American scene today. Even if you don’t agree with everything he advocates, his new book is worth reading for its common-sense policy proposals and intellectual honesty. Silver Lake Publishing is proud to announce the release Gov. Gary Johnson’s SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF GOOD GOVERNMENT.

CLICK HERE to get this book at the best price available anywhere. Johnson is the former two-term governor of New Mexico. He made headlines during his tenure as governor for supporting school vouchers, a freeze on all state taxes, real cuts in government agency funding and the decriminalization of marijuana. In 2012, he is running for President of the United States on the Libertarian Party ticket. He will be campaigning aggressively through the fall in all 50 states.

SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF GOOD GOVERNMENT is Gov. Johnson’s first book. It’s part memoir, part campaign document and part advice from a successful entrepreneur, governor and father of two. In the book, Johnson writes: "Government should protect you and me from those who would do us harm, threaten our rights and take away our civil liberties—whether they be foreign or domestic enemies, unscrupulous businesses or corporations, or individuals." The retail price for SEVEN PRINCIPLES OF GOOD GOVERNMENT is $12.95. If you order directly from Silver Lake Publishing, you can get one book for $9.95. Or five books for only $39.95. Or, the best price, 50 copies for $299.95. That’s less than half of the retail price and the best deal available anywhere.

8Boman crissrosses state, receives major endorsements

"You are the only candidate who stands for limited government..."
Reference Scotty Boman for US Senate site (http://www.boman12.org/)
scottyboman@hotmail.com

That is what Peter Konetchy recently said to me. You may recall that Mr. Konetchy was one of the more active United States Senate candidates seeking the Republican nomination. Like myself, Peter reminded his opponents that observing Constitutional limits on Federal power is every elected official’s duty. So how is it that a Republican is saying this to the Libertarian nominee? Pete Hoekstra won the Republican nomination.

Boman on StageRepublicans have been taking the support of their primary election opponents for granted. They have also taken something else for granted, support from TEA Partiers. Bonnie Cary, Chair of the Clinton CO. TEA Party Patriots has formally endorsed me. Kalkaska TEA Party organizer Tom Bakers told me his group doesn’t endorse candidates, but has told me that, “we support you over the GOP candidate.” This is only the beginning. I have already been contacted by several other TEA Party activists, who have chosen to back yours truly.

This August has been the month in which over a year of preparation is starting to come together. Ever since I formed an Exploratory Committee in early 2011, I have emphasized the simple fact that Wall Street Bailout supporter Pete Hoekstra would not present an acceptable alternative to Wall Street Bailout opponent Debbie Stabenow. On May 21st Republican frontrunner, Pete Hoekstra, withdrew from a Romeo Area Tea Party forum when he found out I was to be included. Since that was my first appearance at such a forum as a Libertarian, I emphasized the fact that the Republicans would have no cause for worry, from me, if they nominated a candidate who could credibly run on a message of limited government.

They had their chance. But that’s not all! I have just received the endorsement of Adam Kokesh. Those who attended the Michigan Libertarian convention were treated to a truly thought provoking speech by him, but he has a much larger audience: Adam Kokesh is a nationally renowned public speaker, radio talk show host, and internet journalist. He first started making waves on the national stage during the 2008 election cycle where he actively campaigned against the war in Iraq after serving in it as Corporal in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He has shared the stage with Ron Paul, including an inspiring appearance at Ron Paul’s Rally for the Republic.

Everything is falling into place for the most successful Libertarian United States Senate campaign in Michigan history except for one thing… Money. Thanks to patriots like you, I have been able to print thousands of pieces of literature, make appearances all over the state, and print bumper stickers, but I have spent all of your contributions doing so. Signs are on back order, and I am struggling to raise enough money to print new ones. I have an untapped address list of thousands of potential supporters that I can’t afford to send letters to.

In February I was able to poll 6% state-wide. Polling this well in a post-primary poll would secure my place in televised debates, but I need to be included first. Now the mass media and pollsters are falling back into the old rut of fixating exclusively on the old party candidates, and are not going to acknowledge Libertarians unless they start to see some advertising from us. Advertising costs money. So please don’t let this opportunity slip away. Contribute whatever you can, as soon as you can. I will do my part to deliver the message of individual liberty and Constitutional government to every corner of this state.

In liberty,
Scotty Boman

8Huge Potential in 42nd District House Race

James Lewis making strong challenge to complacent incumbent
From August 11 News Release
http://electjameslewis.com/

James LewisAlthough James Lewis (L) was already on the ballot for November, his election team says they were waiting for the “distraction” of the two-party primaries to be settled before hitting the campaign trail. Lewis has wasted no time in earning the support and endorsements of local business owners, many of whom were one-time supporters of incumbent Bill Rogers (R-Brighton). Lewis’ endorsement list appears to be growing and growing fast.

“Endorsements have been rolling in over the past 48 hours” said Lewis campaign manager Steve Mace. “We have little doubt that Rogers’ record of staying as minimally engaged as possible with local and area business owners and constituents will hurt him this fall. His ‘name-brand’ is only going to take him so far this time. The damage is done and the trust they placed in him has eroded,” Mace said. Mace made reference to a meeting that occurred between Rogers and local and area tavern owners last October where his constituents raised concerns over state regulations that they feel are hurting their businesses and employees jobs. They asked Rogers to take their message to the House. Rogers advice to these local business owners to, “Hire a lobbyist.”

“Rogers has spent the past two terms proving he is a ‘party-first’ politician, and voters have taken note of that. He [Rogers] takes his orders from the speaker’s office [Jase Bolger (R-Marshall)], not the people and business owners of the 42nd district,” Mace says. These are some of the many reasons that business owners are flocking to Lewis, a business owner himself....

Volunteer for the exciting James Lewis campaign here.

8West Michigan candidates running active races

Big doin's in Muskegon as Boman joins Buzuma and Sundquist
From report by Mary Buzuma
mary.buzuma@att.net

Roosevelt Park 1Well-wishers and people curious about Libertarian philosophy came out to Fricano’s Pizza in down town Muskegon on the night after the Primary election August 8th. The event featured Scotty Boman who is running for the US senate against Washington insiders Debbie Stabenow and Pete Hoekstra; Mary Buzuma who will be running against Bill Huizenga for the 2nd US congressional seat (that may prove to be an interesting race as there will be no Democrat opposition); and Nick Sundquist who will be running against Holly Hughes and Colene Lamonte for Michigan’s 91st District Seat. The speeches were well received and the pizza was good too. To view the speeches go to nicksundquist.com

Roosevelet BuzumaThe LPWM “Lady Liberty Float” joined about 90 businesses, schools, local teams and other community groups that participated in the Roosevelt Park Day parade in Muskegon, MI Saturday August 25.   Organizers said they didn't know how many people attended the parade, but by the time it began at 10 a.m. more than a hundred spectators were lined up Broadway, the last stretch of the parade. Everyone enjoyed seeing the 6 foot statue of Lady Liberty and Libertarian candidates Nick Sundquist and Mary Buzuma along with their families walked beside the float and handed out “pop Ice” to the delight of both children and adults.”

8Justin Altman aims to clean up Washtenaw County

Libertarian candidate confidently asserts Liberty and Justice model
From Website of Justin P. Altman for Washtenaw County Prosecutor
http://www.altmanforprosecutor.com/home

altmanEvolving Criminal Prosecution

Justin Altman is committed to prosecuting criminals in a way that will foster the reduction of violent crime in the county and the growth of social well being of the residents of the county. The time is upon us to choose a path of peace, accountability, and equal rights. The liberty movement has taken its time to set a moral and philosophical foundation that shows each of us that violence is not a solution to our problems. The foundation is now complete and we are ready to succeed.

Justin is the leader we need...

... to implement these ideas in Washtenaw County. We can work together to make our County a shining beacon for the rest of Michigan, the rest of America, and the rest of the world. We can reduce crime through reasoned prosecution strategies, and we can grow the economy through reasoned discretion of prosecution. Please volunteer or donate today to invest in creating a more free, a more prosperous, and a more peaceful county! Or you can browse the site if you need more information about Justin, his ideas, or his plans.

8Creating the LP Meme in 2012

Updated campaign with suggestions from Johnnie LiveFreeSeed

Last two months we stressed the importance of taking the Johnson video "Be Libertarian with Me" viral:

Be Libertarian

Last month we also mentioned the availability of Gary Johnson materials to candidates in large quantities for free. Please, candidates and others--I'll make special availability to anyone who will seriously use the materials--, visit that article here (michiganlp.org/ENewsletters/201208/201208_ML.html#7) and 'get the lit out.' The next idea comes from a man who wants to see the Live Free message blanket the known commercial walk-and-drive space of America.

Kilroy is Here'Kilroy is Here'
A subliminal liberty promotional campaign that keeps on giving
by Johnnie LiveFreeSeed

The Gary Johnson 3" x 3" Live Free stickers are the perfect media for creating a guerilla campaign blanketing the country with the freedom philosophy meme.

Just as in WW2, American servicemen scratched "Kilroy was here" on walls, bridge abutments, abandoned buildings, and so on as an indication that the common ordinary GI was ubiquitously liberating vast stretches of territory, a modest number of Libertarians and libertarians can use the Johnson 3x3 stickers to accomplish something quite similar. We lack the resources to go toe to toe with the big corporate-state media, but consider the following:

At the end of the election cycle 2012, the 'enterprise-active' corners of every square mile of developed commercial property in the US each have two to four Live Free stickers placed in locations where half the customers of an 'enterprise'—for present purposes, an enterprise includes walkways or roadways where the Live Free sign may be seen, esp. telephone poles and concrete support structures—on any given day will see the message. This means virtually everyone will know about Gary Johnson. And should he lose, Live Free will serve as a constant reminder to any new tyrants that their days are numbered.

Live FreeSome rough number crunching: The US is composed of ~3 million square miles of which approx. 5% is developed = 150,000 square miles. Conservatively, 100,000 square miles contain one or more of four corners that can be posted Live Free. Let's assume that the average postable corners per square mile is 2 and the average signage per corner is 2. Which implies on average 400,000 stickers are required to blanket all the postable square miles of the US... meaning that any individual going out to shop or to dine, etc., will see Live Free so frequently as to believe Gary Johnson has unstoppable support everywhere. [I believe average views per post are anywhere from 10 to 100 per day. Let's say 20 to be conservative. Then for 50 days—don't forget views are indefinite following the election—if all the signs were up, that would provide 20 views/day x 50 days/ sticker x 400,000 stickers = 400 million views.]

Now is anyone listening?!

Each individual can purchase 300 stickers from Johnson headquarters at $75, which I'm sure you can get a better price on. 400,000 stickers/300 stickers/individual = 1,333 individuals. Yup, if slightly more than 1,000 individuals spread the Kilroy is Here "Live Free" message in a coordinated and intelligent fashion, we can create the impression of universal—not to mention unending—support for Liberty... at least Liberty Gary Johnson Style.

Note: The LP of Michigan does not formally endorse this project and prefers that all who would place stickers on public or semiprivate structures first acquire permission from the appropriate body responsible for signage approval. — Denee Rockman-Moon, LPM Chair

The LiveFree Sticker Distribution Project is wholly unofficial...

... and the LP cannot support such a program, certainly if it violates private property. But if any of our readers decide to be part of the project, here are some recommendations for doing the project along with intelligent and considerate placement standards:

  1. all participants purchase 300 'lapel stickers' for $75 (http://www.garyjohnson2012.com/buy-stuff)
  2. each participant commits to distribute 5-10 stickers per day on appropriate infrastructure

The preference is bridge abutments, base of parking lot light poles (don't saturate a parking lot, sparseness and location are key) in multiple-store strip malls that have such lighting, and on windows of stores in such strip malls for lease (only in suitable window locations, such as to cover over another no-longer-functional sticker, say, a 'We Take Visa and Mastercard" sticker), and other prospects still being considered--that will each receive a minimum of 10 views per day. I also like telephone poles because the stickers will stay and yet are fairly easy to remove if some phone company guy gets a bug up his butt. And I like the big concrete supports for parking lot lights.

I've attached some photos of what someone has already done in the Novi/Farmington Hills/Northville/Livonia area:

Live Free Collage

Be intelligent: no road signs, stay away from utility boxes—unless hundreds of people per day will see them—because some poor schmuck usually has to clean them up and these Johnson stickers seem to stick relatively hard on anything. Go for wide distribution rather than saturate, say, a particular strip mall area (the effect of a person seeing a LIVE FREE sticker in places miles apart is to think it's a wide and deep movement). We're still working out the science. :)

As for placement technique, here's what I like to do: 1) scout the area and determine where you want the sticker, 2) park reasonably close avoiding any cameras or at least interposing your car between the camera and the target, 3) remove the sticker and cup in your hand partially concealing, 4) get out of the car and walk toward the target casually with your cellphone placed to your ear by your other hand, 5) in one fluid motion pat the sticker firmly on the target (don't be a perfectionist and try to perfectly align). Voila! Mission accomplished. Take pride in a job well done with a very high reward to risk ratio.

Unless you place a sticker on a traffic control sign or slap on a cop car, with a cop inside, the technical penalties if caught will surely be less than if you're an American military or police official caught murdering and/or torturing civilians... or pepper-spraying 85-year-old grandmothers. That is, no penalty whatsoever.

I realize many Libertarians are accustomed to playing by a strict interpretation of 'the rules' and this sticker project smacks of outlaw behavior. Well, consider what the central committee of the Republican Party just did to disenfranchise the entire Ron Paul Nation at its national convention in Tampa! A sticker here a sticker there sure beats tar and feathering, which is what a significant number of the Demopublican agents of tyranny deserve. The Live Free project is a way to start small... to grow spiritually by getting used to the idea of defying wrongful authority directly as a matter of honor.

8Growing Membership

Taking action to build the party
Denee Rockman-Moon

This is the year for an earthshaking rumble for liberty. Keep in mind that membership growth is the seed corn of the Party, and we must keep planting the seeds to realize our crop of a Free Society. As longtime database manager and LPM leader Ben Bachrach has constantly reminded us, "Once, the LPM had 1700 members! And do you know why? Because a handful of LPM activists made it their mission to ask their friends and contacts, 'Hey, how about signing up as a member of the Libertarian Party of Michigan?' You have zero chance to sign your contacts if you don't ask."

So let's get cracking. This is the perfect year to grow the party. Gary Johnson can be president... if you will help. Scotty Boman can be US Senator from Michigan... if you will help. We can end the reign of corrupt regimes at all levels of Michigan government... if you will help. Think about this. Imagine it. Would you, your friends, or family also consider donating their time and talents to support or lead projects for the LPM, our candidates, and lay plans to protect our freedoms and liberties?  Here are some areas where we need your support:

  1. Help lead, create, or plan future political strategy sessions and events. Organize our fabulous volunteers (the list is growing every day!)Build communication between members supporting our Affiliates Director
  2. Be the eyes and ears in your community.

Basically, if you come up with an idea for promoting the Libertarian Party of Michigan, and liberty in general, do it. Take action at the affiliate level; put your name in the hat to help at the state level. If there is no affiliate in your area, found one. Take pictures. Ask your neighbor (the 'prom queen') for a dance; sign them up. Forward news and successes to us via webmaster@michiganlp.org for our newsletter and to keep the Website updated. Any general questions please send to inquiries@michiganlp.org.

Special Election for 11th Congressional District
Chris Sharer

The election on Wednesday, September 5, is only a Democratic/Republican primary election. The libertarian Kerry Bentivolio is running as the Republican candidate against a write-in establishment Republican candidate Nancy Cassis. The general election for the special election is the same day as the regular term general election on November 6th—whoever wins the special election on Nov. 6 will serve out the term of Thaddeus McCotter (who resigned) until January of 2013. The LPM by caucus nominated John Tatar for the special election, who is also our nominee for the regular term election.

Sweet Revenge
Cannabis legalization measure to appear on Detroit November ballot

Colleagues, The Detroit Election Commission voted to formally place our Detroit cannabis legalization measure on the November ballot this afternoon. Such sweet revenge. When the time came for public comment, one of our legal eagles Matt Able ably gave em hell. Calling the whole mess they created a "teachable moment" in their sorry lives and lectured them on the error of their legal ways. With a big smile and snarky tone to my voice, I congratulated them on "obeying the law" and saying "I had a feeling two years ago we would all be meeting again..."

Best wishes,

Status of lawsuit to secure Johnson ballot access

On Monday 6/25/12, Gary Johnson, along with the Libertarian Party of Michigan and its chairwoman, filed suit asking U.S. District Judge Paul Borman to strike down the state's "sore loser" law as unconstitutional. The suit accuses the state of violating due process, equal protection, voting and other rights granted by the First and 14th Amendments. It also says Michigan has never before applied the sore loser law. Johnson could be allowed to run as an independent if he gathers at least 30,000 valid signatures by July 19—something Libertarians say is proof the existing law should not stand up in court. MLive article here.

The lawsuit has now been served on Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and an Assistant Attorney General has filed an appearance in the case for her. We are represented in the case by ballot access attorney Gary Sinawski of New York, and our very own Bob Roddis as local Michigan counsel. Our Motion for Summary Judgment is ready and should be filed within the next couple of days. It sets forth the undisputed facts in the case, briefs the relevant law and is supported by sworn affidavits of Governor Gary Johnson, LPM Chair Denee Rockman-Moon and national ballot access expert Richard Winger of San Francisco.

The Motion asks the Federal District Court Judge to find that Michigan's sore loser law is unconstitutional as applied to Governor Johnson, and to order the Secretary of State to place Governor Johnson's name on the ballot as our nominee for President. We have a very strong case and I am optimistic that the Court will rule in our favor.

Well Received Guest Column
August 24, John Hargenrader, jthargenrader@att.net

I had a very well received Guest Column on the Center for Michigan Web Site on School Aid Funding last year. http://thecenterformichigan.net/guest-column-state-must-clearly-define-role-of-school-aid-fund/

In terms of Libertarian principles, it was written with the message that ‘when you tax people, they need to know specifically what that tax is being used for’. I am against broad scale millages, income, use and other taxes that are directed toward the Michigan General Fund. I think General Funds should be minimum.

The legislature should not be in a position to willy nilly dole out money year over year. Tax dollars when collected, for the most part need to be associated with a specific empowerment of government. The largest two expenditures in Michigan are Prisons, and Schools in that order.

Executive Action
(1973)
Suppressed groundbreaker on JFK killing __ 8/10

What Executive Action does is fill in the blanks, show what likely occurred from the assassins’ perspective, on the ground… and the politics of the operation. When I say assassins, in this context I mean basically three sets of men: 1) the actual shooting teams and the men who trained them, 2) the operational executive overseeing all facets of the ‘executive action,’ played by Burt Lancaster, and 3) hidden business and political chieftains who led the plot, played by Robert Ryan, Will Geer, and a few others. These men’s actions would have all been initiated by the General ‘Y’ analog in the movie JFK, the CIA’s man in the Pentagon.[1]. [Full Review]

Book Review
Guns, Germs, and Steel (1999)
Jared Diamond

Guns, Germs, and Steel is an utterly fascinating revelation of those human origins you always kinda sorta knew but never pinned down. Well, Jared Diamond nails them with a fluid writing style that makes you want to turn the pages to discover the next key BIG THAWT behind this historical development or that one.  For example, how did 168 Spanish soldiers in 1532 with a handful of horses, muskets and spears in unfamiliar territory—the nearest Spanish settlement was 1,000 miles away (in Panama)—under Francisco Pizarro manage to conquer the Peruvian Incans, the most advanced civilization in the New World with 80,000 dedicated soldiers? About the Michigan Libertarian
[main]

The Michigan Libertarian is published/posted on the first of each month. Send calendar events and news/articles to e-newsletter@michiganlp.org by the 25th of the prior month. The Michigan Libertarian is one of the longest-running Libertarian newsletters in the country, debuting in 1973 shortly after the founding of the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The "new" Michigan Libertarian (a predominantly online version) debuted on August 1, 2009 and replaced the weekly LPMOnline and the printed-and-mailed ML.  We will post the newsletter on the Website and deliver via email on the first of every month. A printed version of the new Michigan Libertarian will be sent free to anyone who signs up, which you may do at the LPM web site www.mi.lp.org (or www.michiganlp.org).

LPM members who need a hard copy may request one be mailed to them by contacting
e-newsletter@michiganlp.org or calling the LPM toll-free number 888-Free-Now.
