The following is a list of action items that I'm either looking for others to pick up on, or making a note to publicize via the newsletter and on the Website. These are exciting times and my main focus is to enable everyone in this marvelous organization to contribute to our ultimate success in the campaign for liberty:

1. Advertising rates on the Website: $75.00 for two months. (Contact the Webmaster, Brian Wright, if you want to advertise on the Website or in the newsletter. We'll work something out.)
2. The Tri City Affiliate is making a comeback, check the two dates for August (in the Calendar below). I would also like to advertise that Scotty will be speaking at the Aug 22nd Meeting as well.
3. COME AND BE LIBERTARIAN WITH US: Looking for Fundraising ideas from members, or do you have a meeting or would like to arrange for an particular candidate to come and speak with you and peers? Please check out our site for the candidate websites, emails, or contact information. If you do not find what you are looking please Google or Facebook your candidate within your area.
4. YARD SIGNS, BUMPER STICKERS, LITERATURE: National has a great deal for Gary Johnson materials; they are FREE for candidates. See article below. If you are interested in a Libertarian yard sign, bumper stickers, Gary Johnson Bumper stickers, please contact your local affiliate or chair@michigan.lp.org, we will mail them to you free of charge.
5. Liberty Fest 2012 will be held by the Oakland County affiliate, please contact Jim Fulner (fulner@gmail.com) if you are interested in volunteering, hosting a vendor table, or taking part in this quintessential LPM annual event.
6. Bill Hall’s status report on the lawsuit against the Secretary of State to obtain ballot status for Gary E. Johnson appears below. Prospects for success are good.
7. Three major events occurred in July at which Michigan Libertarians participated in a big way, chiefly Senatorial candidate Scotty Boman. The following collage was assembled from photos received from 1) the Friends of Jim Fulner at the Clawson Independence Day Parade (7/4), 2) candidate Scotty Boman and his visits to affiliates, 3) the Washtenaw County LP and its longstanding sponsorship of the lit table at the Ann Arbor Art Fair (7/18-24), and 4) Wayne County activists attending a 'Tea Party' event in Belleville, Patriots in the Park (7/14).

Obviously Scotty gets around. But at least from the pictographic appearance, people wanna say, "Where's the rest of us?" Thanks to the recurring help of the activists pictured and noted, and those behind the scenes or not pictured, all these big Michigan Freedom events had LPM participation. But there's room for YOU in the future, to help out, to be there, to have a good time for liberty. The following report on the Clawson parade from Jim Fulner suggests what so many are missing.

Monday, July 2nd I received an email giving me instructions on how and where to line-up for the parade. I called Scotty Boman's campaign because I knew that the Fulner campaign was nearly out of literature and figured Scotty could help. Sure enough he did, Ferndale activist Greg Stempfle also joined in the fun. I was amazed to learn that in over 10 years of campaigning Mr. Boman had never previously marched in a parade as a candidate.

I took a make-shift signing reading "Re-Elect No One jimfulner.com" and tied it to the front of my wife's pick-up truck. We put an American Flag on it that we purchased from the Disabled American Veterans before the Parade, and lined the side of the truck with Scotty Boman for Senate and Libertarian party Of Michigan signs, and through a vinyl Gary Johnson for President bumper sticker on the back. The Parade route ran up and down a few streets in Clawson, running approximately two miles.

Through the parade route we received no less than a dozen standing ovations for the Re-Elect No One Sign. We really had a great time. I even got a chance to have a pleasant conversation with both Senator Carl Levin, and his brother, my opponent, Representative Sandy Levin, before the parade. The only downside to the situation is that both the Jim Fulner campaign and Scotty Boman campaign ended up using up every last piece of literature they had.

That is a problem that we hope to have rectified soon by our supporters donating generously to Boman12.com and http://www.jimfulner.com respectively so that we can get some more literature to inform the people of all their choices this fall.

The Fulner campaign is going to get a large number of professional "Re-Elect No One" signs that can excite and inform Michiganders for years to come. I was greatly impressed with how easy the process was, and how well accepted our message was. No one is going to come knocking on the Libertarian candidates door to partake in the system, but many are more than happy to let you participate if you only ask. I hope that more candidates around our state will take our experience and use it to their advantage. If you're not having fun, you're doing it wrong.

At the Clawson Independence Day Parade, Jim Fulner and I had polite words with Senator Carl Levin (right) and his brother Sander. We told them there were no hard feelings, my recall petition was simply an effort to defend American freedom. [You can also see from the photo collage above, as your Senate candidate I have been travelling the state encouraging the affiliates, participating in art fairs and other events, and talking with the people directly one on one. Press coverage has been sporadic, but will increase following the August 7 primary. I'll be attending the Livingston County affiliate meeting on August 2.] Meantime, here is the press release information for the initiation of the Levin Recall petition:

Detroit, MI – Activists are free to begin circulating petitions to recall Senator Carl Milton Levin starting this Independence Day; their petition language has been deemed clear in the manner described by Section 168.952 of Michigan Election law....

The new approved (by default) petition language reads, “He co-authored and introduced an amendment regarding detention provisions (Subtitle D Section 1031) to S.1867 (the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012). He voted in favor of the final version (H.R. 1540) which contained the detention provisions in section 1021.” Sponsors cite Levin’s pivotal roll in provisions they describe as “de facto martial law,” as their reason to initiate the recall effort. The recall will require 468,709 signatures. Boman said, “Warren and I can’t do this on our own. We can get this started with a build-it-and-they-will-come approach. In 2008 1,810,234 people voted against Carl Levin. We need to have about a quarter of these people sign the petition, and a much smaller portion to step up and be activists.”

Co-sponsor Warren Raftshol said, “We are building an internet campaign via Facebook, and these petitions are legal and official. I invite people to forward the link to Carl Levin’s Facebook page and tell him they object to NDAA detention.” Boman said, “Independence Day is the perfect day to launch this effort. The tyranny Levin has brought us with this law rivals the oppression imposed on the colonists by the British in 1776."

The LPM is holding a special candidate nominating convention for the 11th Congressional District vacated by Thaddeus McCotter. This nomination is for the special election for Congressional Representative in the the OLD 11th congressional district, which according to LEC director and candidate for 13th District Congress, Chris Sharer:

"The primary for the special election is September 5th. The general election for the regular term and the special election are both on November 6th." Chris Sharer

Our Webmaster has suggested that the Gary Johnson 3" x 3" Live Free stickers are the perfect media for creating a guerilla campaign blanketing the country with the freedom philosophy meme. He says to use your imagination for opportunistic public placement of these Live Free stickers: "We surely don't want to place them on speed limit signs or any other infrastructure surfaces that may get you in trouble. But what about the dumpsters in the parking lots of every little strip mall in America? What about the lower corner of a window of a store no longer in business? And so on. Such locations seem positively poetic, though, of course, we can't advocate violation of property rights."

I'm listening for suggestions. Once the message gets started, my feeling is half the small business owners in America will proudly stick "Live Free" on their windows, if not their foreheads! Grow Membership and Take Action

This is the year for an earthshaking rumble for liberty. Keep in mind that membership growth is the seed corn of the Party, and we must keep planting the seeds to realize our crop of a Free Society. As longtime database manager and LPM leader Ben Bachrach has constantly reminded us, "Once, the LPM had 1700 members! And do you know why? Because a handful of LPM activists made it their mission to ask their friends and contacts, 'Hey, how about signing up as a member of the Libertarian Party of Michigan?' You have zero chance to sign your contacts if you don't ask."  
 
So let's get cracking. This is the perfect year to grow the party. Gary Johnson can be president... if you will help. Scotty Boman can be US Senator from Michigan... if you will help. We can end the reign of corrupt regimes at all levels of Michigan government... if you will help. Think about this. Imagine it. Would you, your friends, or family also consider donating their time and talents to support or lead projects for the LPM, our candidates, and lay plans to protect our freedoms and liberties?  Here are some areas where we need your support:

1. Help lead, create, or plan future political strategy sessions and events. Organize our fabulous volunteers (the list is growing every day!)Build communication between members supporting our Affiliates Director
2. Be the eyes and ears in your community.   

Basically, if you come up with an idea for promoting the Libertarian Party of Michigan, and liberty in general, do it. Take action at the affiliate level; put your name in the hat to help at the state level. If there is no affiliate in your area, found one. Take pictures. LPM ballot access lawsuit status

On Monday 6/25/12, Gary Johnson, along with the Libertarian Party of Michigan and its chairwoman, filed suit asking U.S. District Judge Paul Borman to strike down the state's "sore loser" law as unconstitutional. The suit accuses the state of violating due process, equal protection, voting and other rights granted by the First and 14th Amendments. It also says Michigan has never before applied the sore loser law. Johnson could be allowed to run as an independent if he gathers at least 30,000 valid signatures by July 19—something Libertarians say is proof the existing law should not stand up in court. The lawsuit has now been served on Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and an Assistant Attorney General has filed an appearance in the case for her. We are represented in the case by ballot access attorney Gary Sinawski of New York, and our very own Bob Roddis as local Michigan counsel. Our Motion for Summary Judgment is ready and should be filed within the next couple of days. It sets forth the undisputed facts in the case, briefs the relevant law and is supported by sworn affidavits of Governor Gary Johnson, LPM Chair Denee Rockman-Moon and national ballot access expert Richard Winger of San Francisco.

The Motion asks the Federal District Court Judge to find that Michigan's sore loser law is unconstitutional as applied to Governor Johnson, and to order the Secretary of State to place Governor Johnson's name on the ballot as our nominee for President. We have a very strong case and I am optimistic that the Court will rule in our favor.

NDAA Nullification efforts expand in Michigan

"On June 14, Michigan Rep. Tom McMillin filed HB5768, which would forbid state compliance with the detention provisions in sections 1021 and 1022 of the NDAA. The legislation would prohibit any state agent, state employee or member of the Michigan National Guard from assisting “an agency of the armed forces of the United States in any investigation, prosecution, or detention of any person pursuant to 50 USC 1541, as provided by the federal national defense authorization act for fiscal year 2012, Public Law 112-81, if such aid would place that state agency, political subdivision, employee, or member of the Michigan national guard in violation of the United States constitution, the state constitution of 1963, or any law of this state.”

Work to nullify NDAA detention provisions also continues at the local level in the Great Lakes State. On July 18, Oakland County Commissioner Jim Runestad introduced an NDAA Liberty Preservation Resolution for consideration, and on July 26, Allegan County Commissioner Bill Sage will introduce an identical resolution to that county commission. “Citizens cannot stand by and permit this type of travesty against the U.S. Constitution that all local, state, and federal officials took an oath to protect,” Sage said. Activists also report support for the resolution in Clinton, Eaton, Grand Traverse and Sheboygan counties, along with Grand Traverse City and Bloomfield Township."

Campaign for Liberty clarifies survey application

It is my understanding that there was a lot of confusion about our candidate survey. I would like to clear this up as many of our supporters are supporters of Scotty Boman who is running for U.S. Senate on the Libertarian ticket.

First let me state that Michigan Campaign For Liberty does not endorse or support candidates. We don't ask our people to contribute, not contribute, volunteer, or not volunteer for any candidate. I was not our intention to cause confusion. We sent surveys only to candidates in the primary. It is our intention to send surveys to third party candidates, that will be on the ballot, prior to the general election. This is practical.

This business is not perfect and politics is certainly an ugly business but I will stand by the statement that there is no other grassroots lobbying organization that defends liberty more aggressively than Michigan Campaign For Liberty. We are not perfect but we work our tails off for the cause of liberty. I apologize for any confusion and want to specifically let our members, who are also supporters of Scotty Boman, know that he has never dodged our questions and I would be shocked if he didn't answer all of our questions 100% correct (when he gets the survey of course).

The Johnson Factor

Thought this was a great opinion piece in today’s Columbus OH Dispatch: http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/editorials/2012/07/21/libertarian-johnson-is-very-mainstream.html There are other good reasons you might want to be giving Johnson some thought.

• He’s the only candidate who will be on the ballot in all 50 states and Washington who shows no interest in bombing Iran. He’s the only candidate willing to say out loud what they all know, that the war on drugs is a useless waste of money.
• And he’s the only candidate promising to cut the federal budget — not just slow its growth — in his first year in office.

Tomorrow (1972)
Faulkner story stark and simple _ 8/10

Tomorrow is one of those films we used to call art movies, with peanuts for a budget, black and white, written first for the stage, and receiving A1 reviews from the top critics in the country. And in the old days—well, when this movie was produced—I mostly would have had one word for such a movie: BOOORRRINGGG! But time and experience in life has a tendency to expand one’s appreciation of the little things, the basics. I cannot imagine a more fundamental movie than this one: from the gitgo, a flashback, Jackson Fentry (Robert Duvall) secures the most meager survival as caretaker of a sawmill in the middle of Rural Nowhere, Mississippi. Book Review
Max Perkins: Editor of Genius (1978)

Having recently been overwhelmed by Woody Allen’s masterpiece of Francophilia, Midnight in Paris, I was excited to know more about the several leading authors brought to the center of the world stage there. Particularly, Ernest Hemingway, whom the actor Corey Stoll absolutely nails… well, at least in writer/director Allen’s eyes; as a man, I cannot help feeling a little surge of surrogate courage when the character talks so forthrightly yet kindly about love, bravery, honor, and death. [Come to think of it, Woody Allen's Play it Again, Sam offers a similar sendup of an inspiringly masculine and creative force in the cinematic community: Humphrey Bogart.] Sorry, this dalliance with hero-worship isn’t to the point. The point is reification of literature and grand world literary figures of the 1920s and 30s. [Full Review]
