by Emily Salvette (chair@mi.lp.org) NEW YEAR, NEW LEADERSHIPHappy New Year, everyone! As we begin 2011, the 40th year of the Libertarian Party, I’m pleased to announce a change in state leadership. Pam Sanderson, who was elected to the Libertarian Executive Committee at our state convention, was appointed LPM State Secretary at the December 5 LEC meeting. She replaces Julie Mack who resigned the position in August. Tim Keirnan, Chairman of the Livingston County LP, was appointed as an at-large representative to the LEC to fill Pam’s vacated spot. We’re very pleased to have these two volunteers help lead our party. Our party has sustained itself for 40 years thanks to a long line of dedicated volunteers who have organized, managed and promoted liberty through their work in the LP. In Michigan, long-standing leaders such as Brian Wright, James Hudler, Keith Edwards and Bill Hall are still actively volunteering. But we also need new leadership to keep the party vibrant, which is why we are so grateful to Pam and Tim for stepping up. And we’ll need to elect new state leaders as LPM Vice Chair Dan Johnson, Treasurer Erin Stahl, LEC Rep Bill Hall and I are not seeking re-election at the next state convention on April 30th in Midland. This organization cannot exist without volunteers who are willing to lead local groups and the state party. If you have skills and commitment, I urge you to step forward and run for office at the local or state level. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact me. I would be happy to discuss opportunities with you. Contact me at chair@mi.lp.org or 734-645-5809. I hope 2011 is wonderful for you, your family and friends. And I hope to hear from you soon as your help is needed this year! -Emily Salvette Last Chance to Nominate a Defender of Liberty January 10 is the deadline for nominating someone for a 2010 Defender of Liberty Awards (Libbies). The awards will be presented at LibertyFest in Flint on Saturday, February 5. These awards are given to individuals, Libertarian or otherwise, who have made notable personal efforts in the defense of liberty. Winners must live and/or work in the state of Michigan. The three categories of awards are:
To nominate someone for a Libby, simply write a short (200 words or less) essay explaining why he or she deserves the award and send it to the state chair chair@mi.lp.org. A committee of three judges will evaluate the nominees to select winners. State Convention in Midland Come one, come all. The theme for the State Convention this year is "Bring a friend to the Party". The main events will take place on April 30, 2011 - with possible expanded fun on Friday and/or Sunday. Final schedules will be available on the LPM website in coming weeks. With the continued growth of interest in the values of Libertarians, this year is a great opportunity for new members and others to learn more and get engaged in the activist opportunities of the LPM. Unlike nominating conventions, the off-year gathering presents a great opportunity to both learn and contribute to the plans and activities that drive the freedom message. Plans include several breakout sessions:
In addition to several interesting speakers, there will be opportunities to meet and engage leadership, hear both statewide and affiliate activities, and offer ideas of your own about our movement. Don't miss the evening banquet -- which year after year has been a great time for all. The Convention will take place at the Valley Plaza Resort in Midland. See: http://www.valleyplazaresort.com/ Alongside the LPM convention, this venue offers a wide range of conveniences. If you would like to get involved with the Convention Committee, contact Bill Gelineau @ 616-723-2776 or freedomlover59@hotmail.com Platform and Bylaws Committees Needed for State Convention Part of the business of off-year state conventions is deliberating changes to the LPM Platform and Bylaws documents. To do this in an orderly fashion, we need volunteers to serve on the Platform and Bylaws committees. These two committees receive proposed changes from members, determine which submissions will be presented at the convention and in what order, and the committee chair will manage the debate during the business session at our April 30th state convention in Midland. If you would like to serve on one of the committees, please let me know as soon as possible. If you have suggested changes to the LPM Platform and/or Bylaws, please submit them in writing by April 15 to chair@mi.lp.org. WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED? 2010 and a new year fast approaching: What have we learned? I can only hope that we have learned some of the following. The people are ready for a change. WE can be that change. The people are tired of the "politics as usual" approach in D.C. We can be that change. The people are sick of hearing rhetoric and are ready to see a true transformation in the body politic. The people my friends, are ready for a political revolution. Revolution: A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time. Or, according to Merriam Webster - a sudden, radical, or complete change. What does this mean to you, to me, to Libertarians as a whole? According to the National Libertarian Party website it means what the Libertarians as a whole represent to the people: It is the only political organization which respects you as a unique and competent individual. America, the people, the CITIZENS of America are unique and competent. THAT is the change they seek. To actually be heard, listened to, left alone and RESPECTED as competent and unique individuals. It is what people are looking for, what they need and what WE stand for. So, take that thought with you into the new year. Use the 2010 election cycle experience and use it to catapult you and help it to help catapult the Libertarian Party of Michigan into 2011. My challenge to you is to make the most of this election "off" year so that we may take the momentum and have a historic 2012. An historic 2012 will not happen without a powerful 2011. So let's work together to create a home... a home for people who know something is wrong with their government. A home for people who want a peaceful revolution. Let us be the real change...it starts with you. In Liberty, Dan Johnson

HOMELAND SECURITY BULLETIN
Fantasy football terrorists captured in Michigan
by Brian Wright
brian@brianrwright.com
Note: This is an excerpt from Brian Wright's Coffee Coaster column. These days we feel it incumbent to remark that this is a fictional piece of satire. Not to be taken literally. [Also, not strictly speaking, it is not a Libertarian Party related piece, but we feel most LPMers have a similar view toward the object(s) of the satire.] — ed.
Oddly enough, when the manure of blind nationalist faith hits the fan, the wildest imaginative fiction cannot touch the frightening strangeness of the truth. The following conversation could realistically happen in United States Bizarro World 2010 as we know it. Indeed, for all I know, it may have actually occurred! The idea came to me based on a charge of collusion made several years ago by a short-time member of my own fantasy football league (MPACT) in the Detroit, Michigan, area.
“Hello, bank operator, put me through to Barry Switzel.”
Ring ring.
“Hello, this is Barry.”
“Hey, Barry, this is Fred. You were in my fantasy football league a few years ago. I was looking for some background: I think those Peplinski guys may be colluding again.”
“How so?”
“They’ve, both father and son, gone to the SuperBowl two years in a row.”
“Wow, that is suspicious. Have you reported it to Homeland Security?”
“Homeland Security? Why would I do that?”
“New deal. DHS has billions of dollars to spend and nothing to do.”
“You mean they have a Fantasy Football department?”
“You bet. And when two team owners named Peplinski, especially if they're father and son, go to the Superbowl, it’s a felony.”
“Geez, that seems out of line with the offense.”
“That’s what they all say… until they’re brought in and waterboarded.”
"Waterboarded? You mean DHS detains and tortures people?!! For being on the wrong fantasy football team?!! You got to be kidding!"
"Who said anything about torture?"
"I can't believe I'm hearing this. DHS can take people off the street for going to a fantasy superbowl?!"
"Sure, if they're both named Peplinski."
“Well, geez, don’t they at least... at least, like, get a trial?”
“Trial? What century are you living in, dude? They have the same rights as enemy combatants... goatherders from Afghanistan.”
“I don’t believe it. You’re going to throw Mike and Jimmy Peplinski in jail for going to a fantasy football superbowl?”
“Twice.”
“Yeah, right. Tell you what, forget I called.”
“Can’t do it. You’ve just reported it, and report of a terrorist incident cannot be retracted.”
“Terrorist incident? What do you mean cannot be retracted? Just forget I called, okay?”
“Can’t do it. Tell you true, I work for DHS now—and they pay me a lot of money. I has power. I gets revenge. I remembers how your league hurt my feelings.”
“I thought you worked for the bank.”
“I’m undercover.”
“You’re sure under something.”
“Was that an insult? Insulting a DHS or TSA official is a felony.”
“Well, no, of course it’s not an insult.”
“Okay, I’ll let it slide this time, but I still have to bring you in for retracting the report....”
[full conversation]
I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around [the banks] will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs.
— Thomas Jefferson
Note: Possible antidote to too many smiley faces used as email signatures? Or more fitting: reaction of the voters to the Lame Duck Congress and its statist measures.

Pay it Forward (2000)
Inspirational tale of cosmic cooperation __ 8/10
We're set in a semi-middleclass burb of Las Vegas, Nevada, at the local junior high school, seventh grade social studies class taught by a Mr. Simonet (Kevin Spacey). The kids are 11 years old, an age—as an early Simonet-led discussion would have it—where "nothing is expected of them." Simonet is a bit pedantic, though refreshingly focused on good vocabulary and sound English, yet feels a genuine bond for his charges. He's also idealistic and conveys his hopes in an extra-credit assignment written on the blackboard the first day:
Think of something to change the world and put it into action.

The Bankers and Other People's Money (1914)
From inside the belly of the beast
by Louis Brandeis
This little monograph from Mr. B, Other People's Money and How the Bankers Use It, was a series of articles written for Harper's Weekly between August 1913 and January 1914. A statement to a reporter perfectly describes Brandeis' main premise: "The control of capital is, as to business, what the control of water supply is to life. The economic menace of past ages was the dead hand which gradually acquired a large part of all available lands. The greatest economic menace of today is a very live hand—[the oligarchy of 'finance capitalists' or RBs]." —pg. 16 [Full Review]

We had a couple of contributions here:
First from Billy Herrick
... who wondered why the NRA did not deign to endorse a single Libertarian candidate in the previous election, despite often the Libertarian candidate being the sole one with the correct position on the right to keep and bear. Billy's letter to us is listed on top followed by the conversation with the NRA:
Hello LPM,
I complained to the NRA because thy did not endorse any Libertarian candidate in their latest "Voting Guide." Not sure if the reply really means anything. But they did say if some one would forward candidates info and positions to the NRA they might consider endorsing them in the future.
Not sure if she is being sarcastic or not? Or if Libertarians would even want to be endorsed by them?
Billy Herrick
His initial letter to the NRA rep:
Hello. Just wanted to say that when I got my voting guide in the mail, there were ONLY democrats and republicans listed. And when no gun-friendly candidate was listed, it said NO endorsement. I think you a doing an injustice by not at least endorsing Libertarians—I would never vote for any Democrat or Republican, so your voting guide was totally worthless to me. Thanks. BH [lol, that's telling it straight. —ed.]
NRA rep (lame—ed.) response:
Dear Mr. Herrick:
As for your comments about the NRA endorsing Libertarian candidates for office, please realize that in making our political endorsements, the NRA-Political Victory Fund (PVF) does so without regard to party affiliation. When considering an endorsement, the NRA reviews several aspects of a candidate's campaign for public office, including the candidate's position on the Second Amendment and firearms ownership rights, viability, campaign strategies, methods and staffing, and finally, whether or not a candidate has a possibility of success in a particular district or state. If you have any polling data or other information on your race please send it our way.
