Welcome to the November 2014 issue of the online newsletter of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, the Michigan Libertarian. In the spirit of patriotism, I salute all of you who have taken part, who have run as candidates or worked to restore the republic through other means, here as part of the Party of Principle. I'm proud to be your gubernatorial candidate this season, as well as chair now for two seasons. It's been more work than I anticipated (doing both) but I wouldn't trade my experience for the world. [And the governor's race is getting too close to call!]

 

Whoever said, "What doesn't kill us makes us stronger," was right on the mark. We'll have a few exceptional and promising showings on Tuesday, but probably no victories. Yet if this cycle should stimulate real discoveries and solutions to why the LP (and the LPM) has not achieved its true potential, count me in for my share of the work to make it happen. Just briefly as we come to the final few days:

 

  • I want to remind everyone about Liberty Fest on November 8 in Livonia (described below). This is a world-class venue with Detroit Renaissance via libertarian entrepreneurship in the spotlight.

  • Next, the road to 2016 really starts Nov 5th. I've learned a lot this election season and we as a party really have to do things better and get more organized.

  • Finally, I'm really looking forward to implementing the many ideas that were put forward at "The Liberty in Action" event on October 25th.

 

Oh, and don't forget to vote... correctly, that is.:)

 

I would like to thank each and every one of our candidates for stepping up and running for office. You are doing a great service by letting us vote for people we can believe in and support.

8Final-Days Push

 

Just a note that we all need to band together and convince our friends, family, and esteemed (and not so esteemed) acquaintances to NOT WASTE THEIR VOTES. Especially in the the gubernatorial and secretary of state races (the latter of which determines LPM ballot status). The latest polls are showing the governor's race to be neck and neck, our Mary can make the difference and put us on the map.

 

Don't forget, LP candidates historically pull votes from both parties about equally, so there won't be any spoiling going on... if one's concern is that there is a dime's worth of difference in what an establishment Republican or an establishment Democrat will do. There is no essential difference: both candidates are proven enemies of individual liberty and will rain down the police state upon us.

8Liberty Fest 2014, November 8

 

Just a few Days Left to Hear the Plan for a Government-Free City

 

How can we  have a  city FREE of government? Rodney Lockwood put together a proposal for his corporation to do it and in just a few days he's going to be at Liberty Fest as our keynote speaker to reveal to us his plan. Rodney is a heavy hitter, a Detroit-based real estate dynamo, who has been covered in the national media, including this exciting story in the New York Daily News.

 

Also, those you nominated for the Defender of Liberty Awards, have been picked and we'll be announcing those winners at Liberty Fest as well

8Election Night Gatherings

 

Oakland County

This year's election night party is being hosted by the Jim Fulner for Senate campaign it will be held election night evening November the 4th approximately 7:00 p.m through at least midnight.

 

The party will be hosted at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Berkley located at 2299 West 12 Mile Road.

 

Feel free to bring additional snacks or a dish to pass as we watch the election night results roll in.

8 Liberty in Action--Debriefing

 

Enthusiastic and educational day for activists in the capital. LPM leaders attend a vital seminar focused on reigniting membership and fundraising, bringing to bear several speakers of statewide and national libertarian experience.  Many thanks to Treasurer Kim Moore and all the speakers, including

 

  • Dan Johnson of the effective grassroots organization People Against the NDAA (PANDA).

  • Dave Dudenhoefer of Michigan Campaign for Liberty

  • Jeff Phillips, school board member in the Thumb area

  • Brian Wright, longtime activist describing his Good Neighbor Libertarian plan

 

We learn what does and does not work in building effective and well-funded organizations for liberty.

 


 

8Campaign Tips from Leonard

Most LPM candidates plan to do little or no campaigning. But please at least respond timely to the League of Women Voters questionnaire, which you will get in August.

 

If you have time, please also respond to questionnaires from the mainstream news media. Candidates who want to do a little more campaigning should have a website.

 

You can get a free website from many places including www.wordpress.com, www.democracy.com, and www.myspace.com. After you set up your website, you should inform the LPM webmaster, who will put a link from our candidate list page to your website. After the August primary, candidates for a state office should inform the Secretary of State office, asking that it put a link from its candidate list page to your website. You may need to repeat the request several times. For candidates for a local office, many county clerks likewise will put a link from its candidate list page to your website.

 

Candidates who want to do more campaigning can find excellent advice on the Resources folder of our state party website.

 

3-Minute Stump Speech

 

My opponents think they can spend your money and manage your life better than you can. I'm not a busybody. I don't want to spend your money or manage your life. Some people are too lazy or cheap to spend their time and money meddling in your life. They want government bureaucrats meddling in your life. Government busybodies are much worse than private ones. Government can compel disclosure of your private information. Private busybodies cannot. Government can impose taxes, fines, and imprisonment. Private busybodies cannot.

 

If you think the Democrats can spend your money and manage your life better than you can, please raise a hand. If you think the Republicans can spend your money and manage your life better than you can, please raise a hand.

 

Perhaps you didn't know that [almost] all of you are libertarians. If you vote for Democrats or Republicans because you consider them the lesser of two evils, you vote for evil. Why would any decent person vote for evil? Elections are rarely decided by only a few votes. Therefore, your vote rarely determines who is elected.

 

But your vote always sends a message. If you vote for Democrats or Republicans, you send a message that you agree that they can spend your money and manage your life better than you can. What a waste of your vote. If you don't vote, you waste your right to send a message and you imply that you don't care. Vote for what you know is right, rather than for what falsely seems expedient.

 

Send a message that you want government busybodies off your back. Vote Libertarian.

The Michigan Libertarian is published/posted on the first of each month. Send calendar events and news/articles to e-newsletter@michiganlp.org by the 25th of the prior month. The Michigan Libertarian is one of the longest-running Libertarian newsletters in the country, debuting in 1973 shortly after the founding of the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The "new" Michigan Libertarian (a predominantly online version) debuted on August 1, 2009 and replaced the weekly LPMOnline and the printed-and-mailed ML.  We will post the newsletter on the Website and deliver via email on the first of every month. A printed version of the new Michigan Libertarian will be sent free to anyone who signs up, which you may do at the LPM web site www.michiganlp.org (or www.mi.lp.org).
