Welcome

[main]

Welcome to the September 2014 issue of the online newsletter of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, the Michigan Libertarian. The newsletter is our main vehicle for sharing what's happening for Libertarians in Michigan. You may manage your subscription by going here or visiting our Website www.michiganlp.org).

From the Chair(s)

From Mary
chair@michiganlp.org

Buzuma"But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." – Thomas Jefferson"

Summer’s over, September is here, kids are back to school and 70 more days to the General Election. Actually for the two major parties they have 70 more shopping days to buy votes.

Libertarians are getting attention and candidates as well as advocates need to communicate how our message appeals to freedom loving people across the political spectrum. This is from CAPCON: Commentary: Small Tent or Big Tent?

Why political parties are missing the larger picture

Because this is no choice at all.

Allegan County Fair

The Libertarian Party of West Michigan will be staffing a booth 5-13 September from 10am to 10pm.  We are still looking for volunteers to give the World’s Smallest Quiz, hand out literature and communicate all things libertarian.  We will be located in the White Industrial Building #12
http://www.allegancountyfair.com/files/2014/07/Fair-Map-letter-sized.pdf

Please contact mary.buzuma@att.net if you would like to spend a couple of hours or so in the morning, afternoon or evening.  This is a great opportunity for candidates to do some outreach. Join the Lady Liberty Float in the parade on Thursday September 11. The parade starts downtown at 6:30 pm arrives in front of the grandstand at 7:00 pm.

8Jim Fulner to Address Oakland Campaign for Liberty Group

Dennis Marburger
Oakland County, Michigan Campaign for Liberty

Good afternoon, Patriots! Here's the latest on the September 2014 Oakland County, Michigan Campaign for Liberty meeting which will take place on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Shield's Pizza (http://shieldspizza.com/)  in Troy - 1476 W Maple Rd Troy, MI 48084 · (248) 637-3131, north side of the street, just west of Crooks Road. Feel free to arrive as early as 6:30PM for social time.

We'll be updating you on the latest political news at the Federal, State and Local levels as well as informing you of ways to influence the decision-making process so that you can become politically empowered. We are putting together another outstanding lineup of presentations by our members. Check out this great agenda:

  1. State GOP Convention review - Christopher Cummins
  2. Local police and Sherriff's issues, public safety and property rights in the 21st century American police state - Shane G Trejo
  3. John Peters will discuss his just published article on ISIS @ Lew Rockwell.com
(https://www.lewrockwell.com/2014/08/john-m-peters/americas-latest-frankenstein/ and the situation overseas. This is extremely critical, as the War Party is doing their best/worst to create another catastrophe in the Middle East. We must stop their attempts to widen conflict and renew the war in Iraq, while they try starting a new American war in Syria.
  4. Special guest speaker on a vital issue - Tom McMillin will explain what's going on in Sterling Heights, Royal Oak and other communities regarding these misnamed "human rights ordinances", which are really just thinly disguised attacks on Liberty on behalf of those who want special group privileges.
  5. Wendy Day will briefly tell us about Terri Lynn Land's Republican campaign for the U.S. Senate.
  6. Jim Fulner, Libertarian Candidate for U.S. Senate will briefly tell us about his campaign.
  7. A curmudgeonly report on the IRS hijinks, hilarity and attacks on the privacy of grassroots donors and volunteers.

I know, I know, you are all amazed at how Oakland County C4L is able to do this month after month. It's because we have a great team and that includes YOU. Please RSVP and invite your friends!!

8Campaign Tips from Leonard

By Leonard Schwartz

Most LPM candidates plan to do little or no campaigning. But please at least respond timely to the League of Women Voters questionnaire, which you will get in August.

If you have time, please also respond to questionnaires from the mainstream news media. Candidates who want to do a little more campaigning should have a website.

You can get a free website from many places including www.wordpress.com, www.democracy.com, and www.myspace.com. After you set up your website, you should inform the LPM webmaster, who will put a link from our candidate list page to your website. After the August primary, candidates for a state office should inform the Secretary of State office, asking that it put a link from its candidate list page to your website. You may need to repeat the request several times. For candidates for a local office, many county clerks likewise will put a link from its candidate list page to your website.

Candidates who want to do more campaigning can find excellent advice on the Resources folder of our state party website.

3-Minute Stump Speech

My opponents think they can spend your money and manage your life better than you can. I'm not a busybody. I don't want to spend your money or manage your life. Some people are too lazy or cheap to spend their time and money meddling in your life. They want government bureaucrats meddling in your life. Government busybodies are much worse than private ones. Government can compel disclosure of your private information. Private busybodies cannot. Government can impose taxes, fines, and imprisonment. Private busybodies cannot.

If you think the Democrats can spend your money and manage your life better than you can, please raise a hand. If you think the Republicans can spend your money and manage your life better than you can, please raise a hand.

Perhaps you didn't know that [almost] all of you are libertarians. If you vote for Democrats or Republicans because you consider them the lesser of two evils, you vote for evil. Why would any decent person vote for evil? Elections are rarely decided by only a few votes. Therefore, your vote rarely determines who is elected.

But your vote always sends a message. If you vote for Democrats or Republicans, you send a message that you agree that they can spend your money and manage your life better than you can. What a waste of your vote. If you don't vote, you waste your right to send a message and you imply that you don't care. Vote for what you know is right, rather than for what falsely seems expedient.

Send a message that you want government busybodies off your back. Vote Libertarian.

I'm [name], Libertarian for [office]. Thank you.

8Website Help Available for Free to LPM Candidates

By Brian Wright

Webmaster@michiganlp.org

Dear Libertarian Candidate:

If you go to the Candidates tab on the LPM Website and the Webpage information for each candidate, you'll see that Scotty has prepared a Website template on democracy.com for each of our candidates. These are full-featured Websites that enable you to identify yourself and your issues, even collect endorsements and funds. We recommend you take full advantage of the wonderful work Scotty has done here to set you up in cyberworld. Just go to your indicated url and sign up to get started. If you have questions contact Scotty Boman at scottyboman@hotmail.com or (313) 247-2052.

Also on the Candidates page, note the entry for John Tatar, running for 11th District US Congress. John gave me his information and from that I made a simple page for him at the indicated location. There is no issue with having two Websites for your candidacy, and if you wish to have a simpler one-or-two-page presentation of why you're running for office that doesn't have all the frills of the democracy.com Website, just contact me at Webmaster@michiganlp.org, and I'll be happy to set up your page. Thanks.

8Webmaster to Remain on the Job

By Mary Buzuma

We've discovered in the course of leaving the door open for someone new to take the reins as Webmaster and as newsletter editor, that:

  • due to the paucity of Webmaster candidates,
  • the absence of a suitable vetting process for candidates,
  • the critical upcoming election,
  • and the need for stability in the party structure for the next few months on the advent of perhaps shifting to a New Paradigm strategy and business plan (ref. "Good Neighbor Libertarian" below) ...

… the current WM, Brian Wright, has agreed to remain in his official capacity at least until the next state convention. He will continue to perform his former routine duties on the Website, without pay, but will scale down his activity, especially regarding any extra work on the newsletter.

Thus, instead of seeking candidates for WM and newsletter editor, we are asking for individuals who are interested in eventually becoming Webmaster or newsletter editor to simply contribute substantial ongoing services to the Website and newsletter functions (posting, editing of posts and pages, writeups and submittals of new features for incorporation, nl reports and articles, etc.) such as what Scotty Boman has been doing… only moreso. Such individuals please contact Brian Wright to make arrangements. Thank you.

8Good Neighbor Libertarian Business Plan

By Brian Wright

Recently I wrote a book on LP grand strategy called Leaving the Sandbox. In that book I develop the seeds for a tactical operation or 'business plan' that I designate as the practical system: Good Neighbor Libertarian... which will also be the title of a small recruitment and training manual. This GNL document (and eventually an accompanying video) will show those who are interested in joining or helping the LPM how to do so effectively. You may see the fundamentals of my GNL plan on my column here: http://brianrwright.com/CoffeeCoasterBlog/?p=4548 (it's chapter 3 in LTS).

The approach is based on the 'many hands make light work' philosophy as well as giving individuals doable tasks that can be tracked and encouraged via invigorated, excited LPM affiliates addressing and rolling back deep government assaults as well as day-to-day corruption... at a real public-official body near you. We're going to get off our purity and abstractions and away from our computers and electronic devices and go down to 'city hall' (at any level that appeals to to the given GNL) to empower citizens and hold officials accountable. Right now, my prototype rollout of the GNL system I plan in coordination with the Kalamazoo affiliate and, possibly, via creation of a Western Oakland County affiliate. [Also perhaps an explicit Detroit affiliate via Brother Karl.]

I'm personally very excited about GNL and its prospects, both in terms of its quality and the likelihood of developing vast numbers of Libertarian Party members--virtually all of them working effectively to turn back the imminent threats to our lives and liberties. It's been a very busy August, but I've cleared the deck for being able to complete the GNL manual in September... barring unforeseen circumstances.

[main]

The Michigan Libertarian is published/posted on the first of each month. Send calendar events and news/articles to e-newsletter@michiganlp.org by the 25th of the prior month. The Michigan Libertarian is one of the longest-running Libertarian newsletters in the country, debuting in 1973 shortly after the founding of the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The "new" Michigan Libertarian (a predominantly online version) debuted on August 1, 2009 and replaced the weekly LPMOnline and the printed-and-mailed ML.  We will post the newsletter on the Website and deliver via email on the first of every month.
