Welcome to the August 2013 issue of the online newsletter of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, the Michigan Libertarian. The newsletter is our main vehicle for sharing what's happening for Libertarians in Michigan. You may manage your subscription by going here or visiting our Website www.michiganlp.org).

From the Chair(s)

From Mary

BuzumaAh the “dog days” of summer. That sultry part of the season when Sirius, the Dog Star, rises at the same time as the sun. It’s also described as a period marked by lethargy, inactivity or laziness. But not for the LPM. We’ve been busy!

I’d like to welcome our new media director, Heather Richards-Wodrich. A former journalist (news anchor/reporter/news director/producer in tv, radio, newspaper, web) she spent the better part of 25 years in news in the South Bend, Indiana Metro area. Heather and her husband relocated to Michigan in 2010 and currently reside in Kentwood. I’d also like to welcome back Leonard Schwartz as our new Political Director. A long-time member of the LPM, Leonard has run for political office several times as well as provided candidate training materials and candidate training sessions. More important he is very familiar with election law.

A big thanks goes out to Jim Fulner for contacting Leonard and convincing him that his Party needs him one more time. The following campaigns are hot:

  • At a special convention last Saturday (Jul 27), the LPM nominated Pat Clawson as the Libertarian candidate for the 49th District of the Michigan State House special election on Nov 5, 2013.
  • Scotty Boman, Detroit City Clerk (Primary Aug 6)
  • Michael Brennan, Livingston County County Commissioner District 5 (Special Election Aug 6)
  • William Wenzel, Kentwood City Commission Ward 1(Primary Aug 6) and Erwin Haas, Kentwood City Commission Ward 2 (General Election Nov 5).

Last I’d like to thank the Libertarian Party of Washtenaw County for sponsoring another successful outreach booth at the Ann Arbor Art Fair. The heat was brutal, the liberals and socialists annoying, but it was gratifying to meet those who stopped by to just chat, take the quiz, sign our register, or just throw a few bucks in the donation jar to thank us for fighting the good fight.

In liberty, Mary

8Welcome to LPM's New Media Director

HeatherThe Libertarian Party of Michigan would like to welcome the new LPM Media Director, Heather Richards-Wodrich.. Heather, who hails from North Syracuse, NY, graduated from Houghton College with a B.S. in Communications. After graduating Heather moved to South Bend, Indiana where she began her career in media.

Heather has worked for WNDU-News Center 16 and WSJV-FOX28 in Indiana as an anchor, reporter and producer. Heather also has extensive experience in radio having worked as a reporter, morning show co-host (eventually becoming news director) for Federated Media. In 2010 Heather moved to Grand Rapids, where she currently resides with her husband.

Heather tells us that in her spare time that she loves reading, riding motorcycles with her husband, and is a strong advocate of Libertarian principles. So please join us in welcoming Heather to the LPM executive team. You may reach Heather at Media@MichiganLP.org

Candidate Boman Assaulted, Injured by WCCCD Police

Boman EmblemDetroit, MI, 7/31/2013 – Campaigning has become dangerous for Detroit City Clerk candidate Scotty Boman. According to Boman, a member of the WCCCD campus police attempted to intimidate him while he was taking pictures of his opponent’s (Janice Winfrey) signage at the early voting location at the Northwest Campus of WCCCD on Tuesday July 30th. After he moved to where volunteers for other candidates were handing out literature, he was assaulted by the officer, then thrown to the ground by additional officers as he attempted to hand campaign literature to a passers-by. Boman said he was then held prisoner until a campaign forum, that the officers knew he was scheduled to attend, was nearly over.

“As soon as I took out my camera and pointed it at Janice Winfrey’s banner (which was draped over the voting location’s entrance) this one officer stormed out of the polling place and shouted, ‘What do you think your doing!’ I responded that I was taking a picture of the banner.” Boman went on to say, “I then went to take a picture of another nearby sign that read ‘Vote here Janice Winfrey City Clerk.’ At this point a poll-worker, came out to where I was taking the picture. I started recording video of our conversation regarding Winfrey’s signage when the Officer who previously shouted at me came out and told me to put away the camera. I asked if my photography was illegal, and which law it violated. I emphatically stated that I would follow her instructions immediately if she asserted I was breaking the law, but she could not cite any.”

Wnfrey1After walking to where volunteers for other candidates were handing out literature, Boman says his efforts to do likewise were met with physical force. “I pulled one of my campaign cards out of my pocket as I said, ‘Scotty Boman for City Clerk.’ The same officer (who wore no identification) swatted my hand, and I said, ‘Don’t touch me.’ As I continued to extend my arm (to hand the card to a passer-by) two or three additional officers pounced on me and threw me to the ground (breaking skin on my right shoulder).” Boman went on to say, “While I was pinned to the ground I pleaded to be let go so I could get to my car.” The officer said, ‘We are past that’ As I was cuffed and lead away.

Boman claims he repeatedly asked if he was under arrest, and what law he had broken. “When I realized they were not asserting any lawful basis for their actions, I realized all bets were off; this wasn’t about law, it was about brute force and dirty politics.” Boman said. I told them that people knew I was at the Northwest campus and that my absence would be noticed if I failed to show up for a 5:00 PM candidate forum. “Some of them chuckled and made remarks like 'that’s politics' to one another.” Boman said.

He says they then made him sit in a closet. “After I overheard someone saying it was 4:00 PM I opened the door and told them that I really needed to get to the forum, and if I wasn’t under arrest, that I had a right to leave.” Boman went on to say, “They told me to sit down and I complied. After a while my legs were getting a bit numb so I stood up to stretch my legs and paced back and fourth, while staying in the closet. At this point a couple of officers came in threw me against the wall and pushed me into the chair, cuffing me in a painful position that made it impossible to sit comfortably and causing continuous pressure on my wrists.” Boman continued, “I complained that I was in pain, but each adjustment just made it worse. Eventually my hands went numb. My requests for water were repeatedly rejected as I became faint.

Winfrey2After being captive for over 2.5 hours I was told, ironically, that I was finally placed under arrest for trespassing. One officer said they were charging me with this because I didn’t leave when asked – An obvious lie since the exact opposite was the truth. I had spent a couple hours begging to leave and was repeatedly denied.” After about another hour Boman said he was escorted to his car by three officers, who placed his camera in the trunk of his car, and told him that if he was seen taking pictures on campus again he would be arrested. “I was determined to not let them win,” said Boman, “I did a B-line to the candidate forum, and was able to tell people what happened, before it ended. I then realized that my right hand was still immobile and numb.” Boman went to the hospital. (As of 7/30/13) use of his right hand has not returned.

The LPWC, with help from LPMers from across the state, ran a great booth at the Ann Arbor Art Fairs. Many thanks to all our volunteers, but especially our state chair Mary Buzuma who stayed over two nights to work multiple shifts and to Chris Sharer who provided the Operation Politically Homeless materials that helped make the booth a resounding success. We have contact info for people from not only our local area, but across the state and at least one out-of-state name to pass on.

Boman makes mark in Detroit City Clerk race

Scotty is appearing in all the candidates' debates and forums that he can, including the important Detroit City Clerks' forum being held tonight on August 1, press date for the Michigan Libertarian. From Scotty's blog:

How To Take $16 Million From Detroiters Without A Fight

Detroit, MI – If Detroit City Clerk candidate Scotty Boman has his way, things will change for the better in the City of Detroit Clerk’s office, and soon. Boman, a native Detroit resident, and community college professor, is running for office this fall. Boman say’s he’s certain he can bring about positive improvements within the city structure, regardless of the fact that they are in bankruptcy and under the supervision of emergency manager, Kevyn Orr. Boman is particularly upset about the lawsuit that embroils Plymouth Township and Wayne County treasurer, Raymond Wojtowicz over the bumbling sale, and subsequent purchase of 300 acres of land that belongs to Detroit. According to Boman, “The City of Detroit lost land, assessed at sixteen million dollars, to Plymouth Township because City officials weren’t paying attention, and they failed to establish lines of communication to keep interested parties informed."

KossNew Libertarian Southfield Township Trustee

On June 21st, Southfield Township Trustee Rosanne Crowley Koss informed the Board of Trustees that she has joined the Libertarian Party. Koss will no longer be sitting as a Republican Board Member and instead, will sit as a Libertarian for the remainder of her term. Koss served on Village Council in Beverly Hills, Mich. from 2004 to 2012, serving as Council President Pro Tem from 2007-2010 and Council President from 2010-2012. In 2012, Koss was elected to the Southfield Board of Trustees receiving the highest number of votes in both the primary and general elections. She is known by former colleagues at the Village Council for her hands-on, proactive and thorough consideration of all issues.

“I put a great deal of thought into my decision. I discussed it with family and friends for some time. I was encouraged by them to put what I felt is right for our community and myself before anything else. This decision was not made overnight,” Koss said. Media release located here.

LWVby Brian Wright

Just laying out a new idea in conjunction with our new campaign to appeal to voters with effective, meaningful campaigns. These are somewhat random thoughts and simply a rough draft for an idea I'm working on. For some reason I remembered back to my earlier LPM days and reading a very helpful book written and published by the Michigan League of Women Voters called The State We're In. And we definitely are in 'such a state. Oy!' Unfortunately, the LWV has not kept the book up to date and the last edition printed was 1995. Still, the book has plenty of key information—particularly about funding and how the financial mechanics runthat will give you an A in your class on state and municipal governance. I managed to pick up 100 free copies of the book and intend to distribute them to Libertarian leaders statewide.

So big whoop, right? Well, here's my thinking. I've always been a conceptual libertarian and until recently never actually even attended a city council meeting! I'll bet that applies to most members of the LP, certainly in Michigan. It's time to learn new things. Because obviously what most of the LP of <wherever> has been doing has been ineffective in rolling back the state and empowering individuals in self-government. What we do ourselves and for all serious volunteers is start attending city or township council meetings, become active in all citizen avenues open to us to create libertarian change. Then report back, share with others doing the same thing. We coordinate within a LLAN for a given locality. For example, Libertarians join, say, the Oakland County LLANbasically a website and a coordinatorthen attend and report on their own municipal or county units of government and what they, the Libertarians themselves, are doing or observing.

Something like this is a perfect way to plug volunteers into the big picture, as well as to build libertarian/Libertarian cadre. How many units of government exist in a large county in Michigan? Certainly on the order of 100, more if you count school boards, etc. As thousands of us learn more and more, then participate in making local government responsive to the needs of a free people, removing all nonessential functions, we approach the ideal of the night-watchman state or the canton system of freedom of choice in government at all levels based on the universal nonaggression protocol. LLANs properly executed will send LPM membership into the stratosphere. I can easily envision 10,000 or more new members within two years. Think of the relationship and partying opportunities! Let me know your thoughts: webmaster@michiganlp.org. We'll be distributing The State We're In among the affiliates shortly, you can email me as well for your copies.

Livingston County defends military armored vehicle, black uniforms...

Livingston Libertarians first broke the story that the sheriff of Livingston County had taken delivery of a military vehicle from the federales. Here is the story:

MRAPLivingston County Sheriff’s department has received a huge military tank to use during high-risk situations, according to the Livingston Daily. This new tank is called the Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (MRAP). As Barack Obama has stated, “weapons of war do not belong on our streets.” This MRAP is clearly a “weapon of war,” to be used against US citizens.

It is the job of the Sheriff to protect our constitutional rights, not to be a paramilitary force. The excuse for this is 9/11, the “go-to” reason for any encroachment on our liberties. The job of the Sheriff is to stand as a barrier to such actions and protect the citizens’ rights, not take part in these tyrannical oversteps.

In addition to the new military tank, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department has recently switched from the traditional sheriff uniforms to the black militarized uniforms and combat boots. This “militarized police force” was first adopted by the Italian Fascists and later adopted by Nazi Germany. A 2001 FBI study showed that the black military uniforms cause the officers to be more aggressive, and create more fear in the population when interacting with the officers. When I confronted Sheriff Bezotte during his last campaign about the black uniforms he stated [he's] “not aware of the study.”

Military style vehicles and a militarized police who wear black uniforms belong in totalitarian nations, not in the land of the free. It is a sad day when our Sheriffs feel the need to have weapons of war to do their jobs.
— Editorial by James Weeks II, vice-chairperson of the Livingston Libertarians

Libertarian Party of Michigan Webmaster Brian Wright then sent an email on July 19, 2013, to Sheriff Bezotte with a subject line "Assault Tank?"

Hello Sheriff Bezotte:

Can you tell me if it's true whether your office has acquired a military tank for law enforcement purposes in Livingston County? (http://livingstonlibertarians.org/military-tank-to-be-used-by-livingston-county-sheriff/) Also the new black Nazi-like uniforms for sheriff's officers?

How do these changes help further your mission to protect the people of Livingston County from aggression? Whom do you plan to assault with your new weapon of war? I mean aside from the peaceful citizens of your county.

Brian Wright, Webmaster, LPM

Ten days later, I (Webmaster Brian) received this letter from LC Undersheriff Mike Murphy:

Mr. Wright, I am a little offended by the subject line of your email. Where did you ever get the idea that the MRAP is an assault tank??? The MRAP is nothing more than a ballistic transport vehicle, plain and simple.

The military has a program in which decommissioned equipment can be turned over to civilian law enforcement for free. This is how the MRAP was acquired. This is almost a half million dollar piece of equipment, that we received for less than $2,500. (This was the transportation cost to get it here, as it was located at a base in the Carolinas). We have an excellent working relationship with our local National Guard who will service and maintain the equipment.

We currently have an APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) and a semi tractor and low boy trailer for hauling the APC. Very large and cumbersome to maneuver. The MRAP replaces these 3 pieces of equipment and is much more versatile, seems like a no brainer. The MRAP is not an offensive weapon, it is a defensive tool, so we will not be assaulting anyone with our "new weapon of war." This is just another piece of equipment that is available to us, should the need arise. Case in point: The last time we deployed our APC we were successful in extricating a deputy, a woman, and her family who were being pinned down behind a garage by a gunman. Had we not had the APC and now the MRAP, I am not sure how the situation would have evolved.

In regards to the uniforms. The makers of the brown polyester uniforms advised that they were discontinuing them. We looked at a variety of uniform styles, colors and blends. Ultimately, black was chosen for no other reason than to make our deputies less visible at night. (Makes it a little easier to catch the bad guys when they can't see us as well).

Feel free to post this response on your website, so your folks can have the facts.

Respectfully,

Undersheriff Mike Murphy

To which I replied three days later politely in my new 'honey beats vinegar' approach...

Mr. Murphy,

First, thank you for such a civil and pertinent reply. I can see the vehicle in question is not technically a tank. I do believe I had a question mark on the subject line of my email. I.e. 'Assault Tank?' And I can see valid defensive and citizen-protection functions of an armored vehicle--the incident you mentioned seems a worthwhile use. But seriously, how often in Livingston County history do gunmen pin down innocent civilians in a wanton attack? Further, it's not as if LC couldn't get an armored car--even use a Brinks truck--from the national guard or county businesses.

The MRAP troop and ordinance carrier is designed to resist mine detonations and IEDs, as well as large-caliber weapons fire. It's a tool for an occupying army inflicting its will on a conquered population—such as the Israeli Zionists in Palestine or the American forces in Iraq/Afghanistan/Somalia/Syria/Wherever--designed to protect those forces from retaliation as they attempt subdue and subjugate human beings. These MRAPs are cropping up all over the US… for the same reason. Here's one being sought in Concord, NH… for potential duty against an insurrection of Free Staters. I'm not making this up.

MRAP is military equipment. Not civilian police force hardware. It's part of Washington's plan to militarize and federalize local police departments, getting them to turn against their neighbors as an occupying, enslaving force: brutalizing the people, degrading them, imprisoning them, killing them. It's Third-Reich history repeating itself. The Livingston County sheriff's department is taking the easy way out and instead of resisting federal tyranny (which is your charter and purpose) you're participating in it… with a happy face… and the absurd, psychotic, steroid-junkie-inspired Italian-fascist black-militarized uniforms and combat boots.

Mike, it sounds like you're a genuine believer in Constitutional liberty. So are the Libertarians and libertarians of Livingston County, and even freedom-Republicans, of which there are many. So you know as well as I do that the current federal government is nothing more than a pack of sadistic gangsters—with a string of war crimes and torture and gross constitutional violations on its ledger a mile long. Why not do your job, get your boss to do his job, and lead the people with training on how to practically resist the increasing depredations of these monsters. Now that I think of it, maybe there could be a legitimate use of your new MRAP. But the black threads have got to go. How about Hawaiian shirts and white Dockers? [Kidding, but to me, the black uniforms are equally off the wall.]

Become a guardian of the republic. Join us. Take the lead. I swear it will look a lot better for you come election day.

Brian Wright, LPM Webmaster

The Farrah Chronicles (2013)
Ninety minutes in the life of a very shaky girl
by Christine Mahoney (reviewed by Brian Wright)

For those who feel the recently emerging author-directed alternative publishing technology tends to produce mundane work, The Farrah Chronicles will challenge your presumptions. This small story of a young woman’s journey through stylish neighborhoods of broken dreams and borderline sanity is a sparkling diamond of imagination. Written in first person via flashback, we’re first introduced to Farrah (29) as she’s being retrieved by her parents—and into their court-directed care—from an ‘institution.’ She finds it a little more than ironic that the state is placing her safekeeping "in the questionable hands of the very people who endangered it. Indefinitely." [Full Review]

About the Michigan Libertarian
[main]

The Michigan Libertarian is published/posted on the first of each month. Send calendar events and news/articles to e-newsletter@michiganlp.org by the 25th of the prior month. The Michigan Libertarian is one of the longest-running Libertarian newsletters in the country, debuting in 1973 shortly after the founding of the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The "new" Michigan Libertarian (a predominantly online version) debuted on August 1, 2009 and replaced the weekly LPMOnline and the printed-and-mailed ML.  We will post the newsletter on the Website and deliver via email on the first of every month. A printed version of the new Michigan Libertarian will be sent free to anyone who signs up, which you may do at the LPM web site www.michiganlp.org (or www.mi.lp.org).

LPM members who need a hard copy may request one be mailed to them by contacting
e-newsletter@michiganlp.org or calling the LPM toll-free number 888-Free-Now (888-373-3669).
