8From the Chair

2012: The Year of the Libertarian
Denee Rockman-Moon
chair@michiganlp.org

"Talk is cheap... except when Congress does it." — Cullen Hightower

http://old.michiganlp.org/Pictures/Denee.jpgI would like to begin by expressing what an honor it is becoming your new State Chair. For those that do not know me, my name is Denee Rockman-Moon, I currently reside in Fenton, Michigan. I have been employed by Bunzl Michigan for over 13 years, and have worked very hard for my family to set an example to my child, that nothing is free, and if you want something – you and only you will be able to get it.

For the last few years, I have helped out with membership duties, and I was the treasurer for a year. My full intentions as the chair of this party, are to help motivate the people, open their eyes, and get us all active within the state and for our own well-being. As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty; a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others. I ask you to stand with me, by volunteering your time, skills, and ideas to help this party grow to be the best! If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas that you would like to share with me, please send me an email at chair@michiganlp.org.

Special First Order of Business: Take this video viral

This presidential-election year we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to beat back the State convincingly—end the looting, end the wars of aggression, end the lying and corruption, end the police-state violence to the Constitution and to ourselves and loved ones, establish a nourishing community of productive compassionate people, disconnect the special interests, essentially become the humane society we can be. I am so thrilled to have such an outstanding a Libertarian Presidential candidate as Gary Johnson. Whoever is behind him, writing his creative material, hats off—I make a special appeal to everyone reading this newsletter to share widely this one-in-a-million video:

Be Libertarian

Wow! Now you know what I mean! Catch the subliminal bolt of lightning at the end with the wording "1776 kicks 1984's ass" (I know the phrase because of some 'fanatic' libertarian who has embedded this vid in his email signature and captured the frame). This video is equivalent to the one displayed at the Super Bowl in 1984—it was shown only once on commercial television—introducing the Apple Macintosh computer. It shows a young, beautiful, athletic blond in bright, colored gym attire, wielding a sledge hammer, being chased by stormtroopers, running full tilt boogie down an aisle between row after row of bald, drab, gray, faceless drones watching a Big Brother message (representing the early, regimented DOS PC). She... well, see for yourself.

I'm not kidding. This Gary Johnson ad has the same power as the Mac ad in 1984. It has the same message: we humans, we lovers of life, shall never submit to collectivist tyranny. This newsletter goes out to 1500+ people. If every one of you shares the Gary Johnson ad with two of your friends/family inside a week, and encourages them to share it with two of theirs inside a week... well, '1776 kicks 1984's ass'. We can blow modern Demopublican tyranny completely out of the water with one well-flung sledge hammer.

8Simple Webpages for Candidates

Brian Wright
webmaster@michiganlp.org

We have a number of candidates who may wish to simply establish a Web presence for contact reasons, and perhaps collect volunteers. I put together a very simple template page for such candidates. It's on the michiganlp.org Website at this address: michiganlp.org/2012/<whatever name the candidate wants>.html and I've constructed a sample for Joe Slabotnik here (http://michiganlp.org/2012/Slabotnik.html). The candidate may put up whatever he wants on the page, for example, Bill Hall has retrieved some documents for use in Congressional races here:

If the candidate wishes, he/she can buy a url (normally $10-$20 per year) from any Webhost then usually it's free to make a cloaked reference to any other url. For example, you can buy the url, say, http://www.JoeSlabotnikforCongress.com and have it reference
http://www.michiganlp.org/2012/Slabotnik.html.

Anyway, the candidate who wishes to have a free Webpage up on our site needs to give me Name, Office being sought, Photo, Contact Info, and to fill in the middle top panel with campaign and bio. I'll be glad to help but to make the process efficient, I can't be doing much original prose. I can get the office map and definition together. The candidate is more than welcome to change the boilerplate in the lower right panel. Or anything else for that matter. Just send me the html. It will be his/her page.

Gary Johnson to co-headline Tampa 'Paul Festival'

Column by Mark Wachtler in the Independent Examiner

Paul FestJune 24, 2012. Tampa. Organizers for the highly anticipated ‘Paul Festival’ have confirmed that Libertarian Party Presidential candidate Gary Johnson will be a featured speaker at the Tampa gathering. The dual-purpose, three-day event will take place in the same city and just prior to the GOP’s national nominating convention. Having the Libertarian candidate speaking at the predominantly Republican celebration shows a rare and impressive instance of unity that the two major parties could take a lesson from.

Paul Fest is being billed as a three-day music festival from August 24-26, 2012. The event will be held on the Florida State Fairgrounds and is sponsored and organized by a Ron Paul support group in Florida called Liberty Unleashed.

In an unusual move that proves how serious the Ron Paul supporters are about unity among the nation‘s various political factions, the Libertarian Party’s Gary Johnson has been invited to be one of the event's keynote speakers. Organizers stress that invitations are still open to a number of well-known and widely-respected individuals, most notably of course, Ron Paul himself....

8Please match funds for ballot access

Contact: Carla Howell, Libertarian Party Executive Director
(info@lp.org 800-ELECT-US)

Dear Libertarian Supporter:

We’re already over 60% done with petition drives to put our 2012 Libertarian Presidential ticket on the ballot from coast to coast. Our Libertarian petitioners are working like there’s no tomorrow. Because there isn’t – for ballot drives. If we fail to get enough signatures in a state by the legal deadline, we’re out. Off that ballot. No second chance.

  • Our petitioners are getting the signatures in the remaining states. New York, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Alabama, Kentucky, and West Virginia. And others. But we’re running out of money to pay these costs.

  • A Life Member of the Libertarian Party is willing to help. He will match every dollar you donate to put the LP on the ballot for 2012, for our Presidential Ticket and a number of state Libertarian Party candidates.

  • If you donate $1,000 today, he will match it with his $1,000 donation. Double your impact for liberty. If you donate $500 right now, he’ll match it with another $500. If you give $250 for LP ballot status, he’ll match it with $250 more. Our Life LP member will match every dollar you give now. Up to $10,000.

Will you donate today by clicking here -- and please place this text in the Comment box at the bottom so it gets credit for matching funds: "Ballot Access Matching Funds"

Let's Grow the Party

Contact: Denee Rockman-Moon
(denee.rockman-moon@live.com)
810-241-8561

This is the year for an earthshaking rumble for liberty. Keep in mind that membership growth is the seed corn of the Party, and we must keep planting the seeds to realize our crop of a Free Society. As longtime database manager and LPM leader Ben Bachrach has constantly reminded us, "Once, the LPM had 1700 members! And do you know why? Because a handful of LPM activists made it their mission to ask their friends and contacts, 'Hey, how about signing up as a member of the Libertarian Party of Michigan?' You have zero chance to dance with the prom queen if you don't ask."

So let's get cracking. This is the perfect year to grow the party. Gary Johnson can be president... if you will help. Scotty Boman can be US Senator from Michigan... if you will help. We can end the reign of corrupt regimes at all levels of Michigan government... if you will help. Think about this. Imagine it. Would you, your friends, or family also consider donating their time and talents to support or lead projects for the LPM, our candidates, and lay plans to protect our freedoms and liberties?  Here are some areas where we need your support:

  1. Help lead, create, or plan future political strategy sessions and events.
  2. Organize our fabulous volunteers (the list is growing every day!)
  3. Build communication between members supporting our Affiliates Director
  4. Be the eyes and ears in your community.

Basically, if you come up with an idea for promoting the Libertarian Party of Michigan, and liberty in general, do it. Take action at the affiliate level; put your name in the hat to help at the state level. If there is no affiliate in your area, found one. Take pictures. Ask your neighbor (the 'prom queen') for a dance; sign them up. Forward news and successes to us via webmaster@michiganlp.org for our newsletter and to keep the Website updated. Any general questions please send to inquiries@michiganlp.org.

Other LPM News and Announcements

LPM and Gary Johnson campaign file suit to put Johnson on the ballot

On Monday 6/25/12, Gary Johnson, along with the Libertarian Party of Michigan and its chairwoman, filed suit asking U.S. District Judge Paul Borman to strike down the state's "sore loser" law as unconstitutional. The suit accuses the state of violating due process, equal protection, voting and other rights granted by the First and 14th Amendments. It also says Michigan has never before applied the sore loser law. Johnson could be allowed to run as an independent if he gathers at least 30,000 valid signatures by July 19—something Libertarians say is proof the existing law should not stand up in court. MLive article here.

LPM legal consultant Bill Hall advises as follows: Instead [of encouraging the media to focus on the Johnson campaign's failure to meet a bureaucratic deadline], we need to hit hard the facts that:

  1. The Michigan sore loser law doesn't apply and never has applied to presidential candidates.
  2. The fair, honorable and respected long-time Democratic Secretary of State Richard Austin did not apply it to John Anderson in identical circumstances in 1980.
  3. The SOS admits Gary Johnson could petition on as independent, at great cost in time and money. So what "sore loser" compelling State interest is served by having Gary Johnson on the ballot as an independent instead of a Libertarian? [hint: NONE]
  4. This is all about the fact that Mitt Romney, his Michigan Campaign Chair Bill Schuette and the Republican Party are running scared, because there is no way Mitt Romney can win a close race in Michigan if Gary Johnson is permitted to stay on the ballot.

This is a free speech and equal protection case. Should the Libertarian Party have the right to pick its presidential candidate, or let the Republican Party decide who may be our nominee? Should Gary Johnson be treated fairly, like John Anderson, or not? Please don't cater to some media fixation on the 3-minute issue. Act like a candidate. Don't mention the 3-minute issue. If asked, answer the 3-minute question, and then switch gears and talk about what you want to talk about. We must define the case. Don't let the media do it for us.

Signing up volunteers for 2012 Ann Arbor Art Fair
Contact: LPM Vice Chair Larry Johnson
michlibertarian@gmail.com

Once again the Libertarian Party of Washtenaw County is running an outreach booth at the Ann Arbor Art Fairs from Wednesday, July 18, to Saturday July 21. This event draws tens of thousands of people from all across Michigan, as well as Northern Ohio, Indiana and other areas. We need volunteers to staff the booth and this is an excellent opportunity for candidates to meet voters and get exposure. Please check out our sign-up sheet here (which we will continue to keep updated on the Washtenaw County LP Website) and then contact us with the days and hours you’d like to help! This is absolutely a fun time to be a Libertarian on a college/university campus: the Ron Paul and Freedom Philosophy youth for liberty now form the overwhelming majority of 'those who give a ****.'

Voter Suppression bills pass legislature, will Snyder veto?
Contact: LPM Third-Party Liaison Will White
wwhite@michiganlp.org

Senate Bill 752: Ban “stealth conventions” by minor political parties Passed 109 to 0 in the House on June 12, 2012, to require minor political parties to notify the Secretary of State of the date of any upcoming county caucus or state convention to nominate candidates. [This is anti-Tea Party Party bill.] Senate Bill 754: Regulate “third-party voter registration organizations” Passed 66 to 43 in the House on June 12, 2012, to require “third-party voter registration organizations” to register with the state, turn in late registrations within 24 hours, provide their “voter registration agents” with state approved instruction in proper procedures, and require their agents to sign a statement affirming receipt of this instruction. The bill would also require a person to show a photo identification when registering to vote. Senate Bill 803: Require voters to affirm citizenship Passed 67 to 43 in the House on June 12, 2012, to require voters to affirm that they are a U.S. citizen when voting or applying for an absentee ballot.

Many of the provisions of these bills that apply to us are onerous, even malicious toward third parties, and it is my recommendation, per testimony to the House Committee in April that they be vetoed. There is still time to recommend to the governor to veto these bills: [6/28: Governor Snyder may not have made up his mind yet - he is getting a lot of pressure from the ACLU, LWM, APR, etc., so use this link TO CALL THE GOVERNOR! (I believe he has to sign it by Friday or it is a pocket veto, but I could be mistaken.)] Contact me for more information.

Jewish organizations decline to invite Schwartz to speak at forum

For immediate release
June 25, 2012
Contact: Leonard Schwartz, 248-546-3569, www.LeonardSchwartz.us
email: Leonard@LeonardSchwartz.us
Jewish organizations sponsoring a candidate forum for Michigan's 14th congressional district won't let the only Jewish candidate, Leonard Schwartz, speak at the forum. "They invited the Republican candidate to speak even though he is running unopposed in the August primary. Their refusal to let me speak is unfair," said Mr. Schwartz, who is the Libertarian Party candidate and the only Jewish candidate. The forum will be on Sunday, July 1, at 3:30 at Congregation Shaarey Zedek in Southfield. The sponsors are the Jewish Community Relations Council, local chapters of Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women, and several synagogues.

Justin Altman for Washtenaw County Prosecutor

Justin AltmanOne of the most powerful positions in government, the one that uses the force of government against the people, is the county prosecutor. That means this is the most important office in which to have a libertarian, compassionate, and ethically consistent individual. That’s why I, Justin Altman, have decided to challenge the current unpopular County Prosecutor and run for the office as a Libertarian.

The philosophy of liberty has been a driving factor in my life. I understand that it is up to each individual to help create the world they wish to see. I also trust that when you are left alone to make your life and community a better place, you will also leave others alone to live their own lives.

I am seeking the office of County Prosecutor to be an advocate for the people of Washtenaw County. We don’t need the prosecutor to spend your tax dollars charging peaceful people with violations of laws written and interpreted by people in Lansing. We need the prosecutor to stand up for victims and charge their alleged abusers without regard to either party’s race, gender, social status, or job. I understand these needs, and have a plan to make Washtenaw County an even better place to live and work.

The time is upon us to choose a path of peace, accountability, and equal rights. The liberty movement has taken its time to set a moral and philosophical foundation that shows each of us that violence is not a solution to our problems. The foundation is now complete and we are ready to succeed. Please visit my website (http://www.altmanforprosecutor.com/) to find out more and contribute today! My opponent has a large cache of campaign funds, and I need your help from all around the state so that we can show the world what a county criminal system run with a libertarian philosophy can do to better the lives of the people.

Thank you, Justin Altman

Gary Johnson endorses Scotty Boman

Scotty JohnsonWebsite: http://www.boman12.org
Contact: scottyboman@hotmail.com

Scotty just returning from his Every Yooper Matters Tour. He finds a decent number of libertarians in the UP, given that he runs into as many by chance as by design. Then learns that the Gary Johnson Campaign endorses its third set of Libertarian candidates. [For more endorsement program information, Libertarian candidates should contact endorse@garyjohnson2012.com.]

Governor Gary Johnson states: “Scotty Boman has an unwavering commitment to the goal of achieving Liberty in our lifetime – over wealth and ambition, over politics and party, over all other considerations, he is uncompromising in his devotion to restoring the American Dream. Vote for Scotty Boman for the United States Senate!” Scotty Boman: “We have never had a more qualified and capable champion of personal and economic freedom than the 2012 Libertarian Party candidate for President of the United States – Governor Gary Johnson.”

Scotty has been a Libertarian candidate in every statewide partisan election since 1994. In 1997, his candidacy for Detroit City Council was endorsed by the Detroit News. Scotty met and voted for Ron Paul in 1988, when Dr. Paul was the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee. Scotty says, “I have been a Ron Paul “R3VOLutionary” longer than most “R3VOLutionaries” have been alive!”

New LP National Website initiative scheduled for mid-July rollout

Natcom members Brett H. Pojunis and Jillian A. Mack have been working very hard on developing a piece of technology that will enable each state affiliate to have a website (CMS) with a tied in membership platform (CRM) for their State, Counties, Cities, Candidates and more. We named this technology Saratoga. This project has been supported by over 25 affiliates and is continuing to gain support, which we thank you for! The selected technologies were Joomla for the CMS and CiviCRM for the CRM.

The approach is now to develop Saratoga as a separate private venture that will offer the program to the States, Counties, Cities and Candidates directly. The Saratoga team has decided to go this route and we will not be accepting funds from the LNC or the LSLA to accomplish this; we will be using their own funds. Brett H. Pojunis is planning on funding this entire development of Saratoga himself and if it gets too expensive, we have some other people willing to help out.

The team expects a realistic launch date of Saratoga to be sometime mid to late July, followed by an aggressive roll out to the States. At this point, the three principals – Brett H. Pojunis, Jillian Mack, and Flavio Fiumerodo – are no longer involved in the LSLA or the LSLA IT Committee. Their involvement in this project will be outside the auspices of the LSLA and the LNC.

Walmart

No, not a deleted scene from the movie, Idiocracy, it was forwarded to me as supposedly a sign at Walmart. Because that fits with my image, if not the reality, of Walmart, I initially accepted it as authentic. Lesson: Always check with Snopes: In this case, "Alas, it's not a real sign displayed at a Walmart (or any other location)—it's the third-place finisher in an April 2010 Cracked.com contest challenging readers to create "Instructional Diagrams for People who Suck at Everyday Life."

The Post Turtle
Courtesy Pam Sanderson

Post TurtleWhile suturing a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, whose hand was caught in the squeeze gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama and his role as our president.

The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Obama is a 'Post Turtle.''' Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him, what a post turtle was.

The old rancher said, "When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle. The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain:

"You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he's elevated beyond his ability to function, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there to begin with."

(1971)
Classic “I am Spartacus” car movie ___ 9/10

Kowalski (Barry Newman) is a former cop and, before that, Vietnam war veteran, who leaves the police force for moral reasons… he also seeks solace from a personal tragedy, trying to find refuge in speed of both the amphetamine and automobile variety. He has a job delivering cars cross-country. This particular car, a loaded 1970 Dodge Challenger, he’s made a bet to drive from Denver to San Francisco in less than 15 hours. The job takes on the quality of a mission—from a combination of Kowalski’s inner demons and routine smallminded interventions of the various yokels and constabularies he encounters from the gitgo. Classified Woman (2012)
The Sibel Edmonds Story—a memoir
by Sibel Edmonds

My admiration and respect for the author—for the battles she’s chosen, the pain she’s endured, and her raw determination to never give up in the pursuit of ‘truth, justice, and the American Way’—is practically boundless. I first heard of Sibel Edmonds sometime in 2005 when I became a 9/11 Official Story skeptic. In these early days of the 9/11 Truth Movement—some people were on to the Official Story scam immediately, but it’s my sense that the truth movement in the US took off in 2004 with the publication of Dr. David Ray Griffin’s 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions and The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11—I would read regularly about an FBI woman, Sibel Edmonds, who had inside information that the government was trying to suppress. About the Michigan Libertarian
[main]

The Michigan Libertarian is published/posted on the first of each month. Send calendar events and news/articles to e-newsletter@michiganlp.org by the 25th of the prior month. The Michigan Libertarian is one of the longest-running Libertarian newsletters in the country, debuting in 1973 shortly after the founding of the Libertarian Party of Michigan. The "new" Michigan Libertarian (a predominantly online version) debuted on August 1, 2009 and replaced the weekly LPMOnline and the printed-and-mailed ML.  We will post the newsletter on the Website and deliver via email on the first of every month. A printed version of the new Michigan Libertarian will be sent free to anyone who signs up, which you may do at the LPM web site www.mi.lp.org (or www.michiganlp.org).

LPM members who need a hard copy may request one be mailed to them by contacting
e-newsletter@michiganlp.org or calling the LPM toll-free number 888-Free-Now.
