Brass Roots Gathering 9/30/2014

Note, response back from Scotty Boman: several in attendance. The brass roots hearing had testimony but no votes, so we still have to wait for their next meeting which may be in the lame duck.  There is a Senate version ready to go if it makes it through the house.

Highlights: Jon Coon and Mike Hoban were among the attendees and did all the testimony.
The plaque was there.

Brass Roots Plaque to receive hearing 9/30. Be there!

BrassballsLansing, MI – On Wednesday September 24th Wayne Schmidt, Chairman of the State House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, informed Brass Roots lobbyists (Kim Moore and Scotty Boman) that he would schedule a hearing for HB 5595 (A Bill to Allow Brass Roots to place their plaque on the capital grounds). A hearing is necessary to move a bill out of committee. This welcome news came on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the original “Brass Roots” gun rally. The hearing will be this Tuesday, September 30th at 10:30 AM in Room 521 of the House Office Building. Testimony on HB 5595 is at the end of the hearing agenda. More information here at Brass in the Plaque here. If you are going to be attending this important event, please contact Scotty Boman here.

Liberty in Action 10/25/2014

Liberty in Action, Lansing, October 25, 2014

IMG_20141025_093406Enthusiastic and educational day for activists in the capital. LPM leaders attend a vital seminar focused on reigniting membership and fundraising, bringing to bear several speakers of statewide and national libertarian experience.  Many thanks to Treasurer Kim Moore and all the speakers, including Dan Johnson of the effective IMG_20141025_135244grassroots organization People Against the NDAA (PANDA). We learn what does and does not work in building effective and well-funded organizations for liberty.

Jeff Phillips of the Schoolboard of a Thumb Area school district.

IMG_20141025_152548Greg Creswell speaking on his campaign in the 9th Congressional District.

Greg also noted the upcoming Liberty Fest and decried our countrymen’s descent into wanting the government to do everything for everyone. I especially appreciated his statement that, when he dies, he is going to have his headstone engraved:

“Don’t blame me. I tried to warn y’all.’

Or words to that effect.

Announcement Post:

Gary Johnson to Visit Kalamazoo, 10/4/2014

Former Governor and Libertarian Presidential Candidate to speak at WMU

JohnsonFormer two term governor of New Mexico (1995-2003) and 2012 Libertarian Presidential candidate Gary Johnson, will be coming to Kalamazoo on October 4th to promote the local Libertarian Party and his Our America Initiative organization. The event is free to the public and will take place at WMU’s Fetzer Center in the Kirsch Auditorium on October 4th beginning at noon and concluding at 2pm. News Release: LPM 2014 Candidates

PRESS RELEASE – for immediate issue- May 22, 2014

Libertarian Candidates on the November Ballot

At their state convention in Howell May 17 the Libertarian Party of Michigan selected Mary Buzuma of Grand Haven as their candidate for Governor in the November 4 election. Scotty Boman was picked for Lieutenant Governor, James Lewis for Secretary of State and Justin Altman for the Attorney General spot on the ballot.

All told, Libertarians filed paperwork for 30 candidates in state and national races, with additional office-seekers in local and county races.

With candidates in 12 of the 14 Congressional districts, they continue to uphold their status as the largest, most active party behind the Democrats and Republicans.

A candidate for U.S. Senate also emerged from the convention, Jim Fulner of Berkley. Planning an active campaign, Mr. Fulner ran for congress in the 2012 election for the 9th District.

Also of note was the nomination of former Republican state representative and successful national businessman Lorence Wenke, who will be running in state senate district 20.

“We look forward to a pivotal election”, said Ms. Buzuma, who is also the state party chair. “Recent polls have shown people are very disappointed with the way our government is being run on the state and national level. The same old tired rhetoric and lackluster results from both parties in power has driven more people to identify themselves as independents rather than with either of the major parties. We hope they will see that the Libertarian platform offers common sense solutions to problems that fall within the guidelines our founding fathers enumerated in the constitution.”

CONTACT: Mary Buzuma, candidate for Governor 757-748-5606

Scotty Boman, candidate for Lieutenant Governor 313 247-2052

James (Jamie) Lewis, candidate for Secretary of State 616 254-9014

Justin Altman, candidate for Attorney General 734 274-1938

Jim Fulner, candidate for Senate 248 971-0259

2013 Notable LPM Victories and Candidacies

Libertarians win in Michigan!

Two significant victories and a strong first-time-candidate showing:

SONY DSCAndy LeCureaux, Hazel Park City Council

Andy LeCureaux was re-elected in an uncontested race for a third term to the Hazel Park City Council. Lecureux has been on the Council continuously since 2001.

Erwin Haas, City of Kentwood Commissioner

Erwin HaasOn November 5, 2013, voters in Kentwood elected Erwin Haas Commissioner for the city of Kentwood, Ward 2. Erwin, a long time Libertarian activist and leader in the Libertarian Party of West Michigan, ousted the favored Dick DeVos-backed incumbent Maurice Groce by 68 votes. Erwin won this local race with very little money and media attention. This sends a message: if you’re an incumbent, there is no guarantee that you will be one after the next election even — in a local, non-partisan race.

Other Key Races

SONY DSC
Alex Fera ran for Novi City Council and received approximately 6% of the total vote in a race featuring five candidates for three commissioner slots. Alex ran a positive campaign and is still a leading Novi booster. His ‘concession and thank you’ speech is located here, and he plans to be running for further office in the Novi area.

Patrick ClawsonFormer CNN investigative reporter Pat Clawson was the only Michigan Libertarian running in a partisan election in 2013. The campaign was well publicized, but scaled back due to health reasons. He finished with 4.2 percent of the vote.

The Libertarian Party of Michigan is excited to build on these successes by expanding membership and running ever-more highly qualified candidates in 2014 and beyond.

Mary Buzuma
Chairman
Libertarian Party of Michigan

Lorence Wenke to Seek LP Nomination for 20th District Michigan Senate

Gongwer News Service

Republican former state Rep. Lorence Wenke is leaving the Republican Party and dropping his bid for the 20th Senate District in Kalamazoo County as a Republican because he says the party is opposed to gay rights and has been undisciplined in spending taxpayer money. Wenke says he will instead run for the seat as a Libertarian.

Wenke’s decision clears the path to the Republican nomination in the 20th for state Rep. Margaret O’Brien of Portage, who has a little-known challenger for the GOP nomination. Presuming she wins, she will face Democratic state Rep. Sean McCann of Kalamazoo in one of the top Senate races in the state.

Per a comment to the site, Lorence and his wife Nancy will attend the convention in Howell on the 17th of May. He will seek the nomination for Senate District 20 which is all of Kalamazoo County. “I have met with Mary Buzuma and Jason Brandenberg and Mary said she would place my name in nomination to the convention.”

Note: According to the source who submitted this story to the LPM site, Mr. Wenke is multimillionaire who owns Wenke’s Greenhouses in Kalamazoo and in Georgia (where he has a major contract with Walmart). He is a former Republican County Commission Chair and State Representative.

Here’s the news release on Wenke at WKZO TV.
