MEDICAL MARIJUANA ACTIVIST TO SPEAK AT LIBERTY FEST

By Scotty Boman

The LPM's annual LibertyFest banquet, which is being organized by the LP of Wayne County, will be held on Saturday, January 24 from 5:15 to 8:40 p.m. at Dimitri´s on the Avenue, 14316 Michigan Avenue , Dearborn . The program for the evening will include the awarding of the LPM's 2008 Defender of Liberty awards and very special guest speaker Charles Snyder III.

While the candidates we nominate rarely win, the ballot proposals we endorse have been causes for celebration.  In 2006 the Libertarian Party of Michigan was the only political party to support the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (proposal 2).  It won by a landslide.  In 2008, the LPM (unlike the Democrats and Republicans) supported the Medical Marijuana Initiative (proposal 1).  Again it won by a landslide.

At this year´s Liberty Fest (January 24th) attendees will have the opportunity to hear from a man who made this landslide for liberty possible.  He is Charles Snyder III.  Mr. Snyder has played an integral role in passing both multiple local initiatives as well as Proposal 1.

He is not only an activist but also a patient: He has a bone disorder call Nail Patella Syndrome (NPS).  Seven years ago he discovered that the federal government was supplying 5 remaining patients with 300 marijuana cigarettes a month, and, one of the five also had NPS. George McMahon has been receiving his marijuana for over 20 years. Immediately Mr. Snyder made up his mind to turn this seeming curse into a blessing by showing the inconsistency between how Mr. McMahon was treated compared to his persecution.

Having co-founded Flint Coalition for Compassionate Care (FCCC), Mr. Snyder s peaks fluently about both medical and political aspects of medical cannabis from personal experience.  Mr. Snyder should be an inspiration to all who seek a freer Michigan .

Seating for this exciting evening is limited, so register early to make sure you don´t miss out on this opportunity. The cost is only $25 per person. Make reservations by 1/10/09 at https://co.clickandpledge.com/sp/d1/default.aspx?wid=24754  Contact Scotty Boman, 313-247-2052, scottyeducation@yahoo.com for more information.

POLITICAL STRATEGY SESSION JANUARY 18

Libertarian Party activists from across the state are invited to join the Libertarian Executive Committee at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2009, to discuss political strategy for the coming year.  Coming off a very successful 2008, the LPM will be planning to keep up and increase its political momentum.   The strategy session starts at 2 p.m., with an LEC meeting to follow at 4 p.m., at the Troy office.  The Troy office is located at Columbia Center II, 101 West Big Beaver, Suite 1400 , Troy , Michigan .

WANTED:   MICHIGAN STATE SENATE CANDIDATE (DISTRICT 19)
In the November election State Senator Mark Schauer defeated Congressman Timothy Wahlberg.  That means Schauer will soon vacate his State Senate seat and Governor Granholm will schedule a special election in which we can field a Libertarian candidate.

District 19 stretches from Battle Creek to Jackson , and also includes the cities of Marshall and Albion and 15 townships in Calhoun and Jackson Counties .  The Libertarian Party of Michigan is looking to field a candidate in this race.  In the past this was a competitive district, and thus the Libertarian candidate has the potential to decide the outcome of this race.

If you live in District 19 and are interested in running, or know a Libertarian who resides in the District who would make a good candidate, please contact Bill Hall at chair@michiganlp.org or 616-460-9516.  We want to give the voters in District 19 the opportunity to vote for more freedom and less government!

TIME TO RENEW YOUR COMMITMENT TO MORE FREEDOM AND LESS GOVERNMENT
With the new year, it´s time to renew your membership in the Libertarian Party of Michigan.  Go to http://www.michiganlp.org/Shared%20Documents/Contribute.aspx and contribute at least $25.  Membership earns you the right to attend and vote for party officers, the bylaws and the platform at the annual convention of the LPM.  In addition, you will receive a subscription to the LPM´s newsletter, The Michigan Libertarian.  Don´t surrender the political landscape to those destroy ers of freedom, Republicans and Democrats.  Renew your membership in the Party of Principle, the Libertarian Party, today!

LPM CONVENTION, SATURDAY, MAY 23 2009, JACKSON MI
