NEWS AND ARTICLES

STILL BIGGER THAN THE OTHER SMALL PARTIES COMBINED

by Leonard Schwartz

The Libertarian Party of Michigan again has more candidates for federal and state partisan offices than all the other small parties combined.  We have candidates for US senator, all 15 congressional districts, all 8 educational board seats, and 32 state representative districts. Total:  56.

The US Taxpayers Party of Michigan has candidates for US senator, 6 congressional districts, all 8 educational board seats, and 10 state representative districts. Total: 25.

The Green Party of Michigan has candidates for US senator, 9 congressional districts, 4 educational board seats, and 6 state representative districts. Total: 20.

The Natural Law Party of Michigan has only a candidate for US senator.

We are the only small party with a candidate for the quasi-partisan justice of the supreme court. We also have candidates for 27 local partisan offices and one local nonpartisan office.

SCOTTY BOMAN FOR SENATE YARD SIGNS AND SLIM JIMS AVAILABLE

By Greg Stempfle

Yard signs and flyers are in and we are in need of volunteers to help distribute them across the state.  I am looking for a representative from each affiliate to serve as the go to person for Scotty's campaign materials.  Please contact myself or Scotty Boman if interested and to arrange a time and place to drop off materials.  I will be heading on a weekend trip around the state the weekend of Sept 19-21 for vacation and distribution of campaign stuff.  I will pass through Lansing , Grand Rapids , and Muskegon on Sept 19 and through Kalamazoo , Battle Creek , and Ann Arbor on Sept 21.

Yard signs can come preassembled on wires or if your affiliate has wires hanging around they can be delivered flat and can be assembled there.  If you have wires already I encourage you to use your own since ours are in limited supply right now.  Any donation of additional wires is greatly appreciated.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA INITIATIVE
by Leonard Schwartz

The Michigan Medical Marijuana Initiative is on the November 4 statewide ballot - Proposal 08-1. Voters approved similar proposals in 12 states.

For information about the proposal, go to www.StopArrestingPatients.org. To help the proposal by posting fliers at colleges or distributing literature or lawn signs, sign up on that website´s volunteer page. The volunteer coordinator is Matt Witemyre, matt@StopArrestingPatients.org.

Here is advice about two common misconceptions about the proposal.

M1: Because MMMI will change only state law and marijuana will still be illegal under federal law, MMMI will have little practical effect.

Answer: Over 95 percent of all marijuana arrests are by state and local police. There aren´t many DEA officers to enforce federal law. Although it effectively publicizes its arrests, DEA arrests relatively few persons in the 12 states that allow medical marijuana. Furthermore, noticing the problems that have arisen in other states, the Michigan proposal is better written to minimize those problems.

M2: Doctors can already prescribe a marijuana pill. Therefore, there is no need for MMMI.

Answer: That is a reference to Marinol. Marinol is a very expensive synthetic hallucinogen that is similar to the hallucinogen in marijuana. But it is not as effective as marijuana. First, because Marinol is a pill, the amount that enters the blood stream varies greatly, especially for patients who have nausea from chemotherapy treatment. Second, marijuana contains several hundred active components. Doctors don´t yet know which of these components make marijuana more effective.

Libertarian candidates:

Few Democratic or Republican candidates support medical marijuana. This gives you a good opportunity to distinguish yourself and convince people not to waste their vote on Democrats or Republicans. Your campaign literature and website should show your support for medical marijuana. Go to www.LeonardSchwartz.us to see how I discuss this issue.

A slate card of LP state-wide and congressional candidates is available to use at campaign appearances, rallies, fair booths, etc. Just download the file from www.mi.lp.org (it's under "candidates" in the left-hand menu), print the pages two-sided on card stock, and cut the sheets into thirds.  You can even adapt the card to your area by revising to include your local candidates.  If you need the MSWord file for editing, contact me at Salvette@umich.edu.
