  2. Leonard Schwartz Campaign Update — by Leonard Schwartz

At the Libertarian Party national convention, I gathered signature tokens and submitted a nominating petition for vice president.

In the LP, unlike the Democrats and Republicans, the candidate for president cannot select his running mate. He can only make a request. In the past, no Libertarian candidate for president made a request for vice president.

The delegates chose Bob Barr for president. He requested that the delegates select Wayne Root for vice president.

I then gave the following speech: "Hello. I'm Leonard Schwartz from Michigan. When I arrived at the convention on Thursday, I asked some of the officers of my state party to make nominating speeches for me. I learned that many of the leaders of my state party didn't want me traveling around the country as the Libertarian candidate for vice president. They wanted me to stay in Michigan and run for US senator again. Therefore, in deference to their opinion and to save your time, I'm withdrawing as a candidate for vice president and I will run for US senator again in Michigan. Thank you."

The other four candidates for vice president didn't withdraw, thus wasting nearly 2 hours of everyone's time.

  3. LPM Convention Location — by Leonard Schwartz

Some people are confused about the location of the LPM convention on Saturday. It will not be held at the hotel at the Detroit Metro Airport, where parking costs at least $9.

It will be held at the Best Western Gateway Hotel, 9191 Wickham, just north of the airport. Parking is free.

Directions: Get off I-94 at the northbound Merriman Road exit. Go north on Merriman. Turn left at Wickham. Stay on Wickham until you reach the hotel.

  4. Candidate Paperwork Reminder — by Leonard Schwartz

In the past, some candidates who were nominated didn't get on the ballot becuase their Affidavit of Identity wasn't filled in completely.

The most common problem: You must include your precinct number. If your city also has wards, you must also include that number. You can find this on your voter registration card. Please bring this card to the convention. If you can't find your card, contact your city or township clerk's office.

  5. New National LP Platform — by Leonard Schwartz

Delegates at the LP national convention approved an entirely new platform. It is shorter and more candidate friendly than previous platforms. Delegates wanted to encourage a wide variety of libertarians to join the party and become candidates.

Attempts to restore a much longer and anarchistic platform were defeated.

  6. LP State Convention This Weekend! — by Bill Hall

It's not too late! The Libertarian Party of Michigan's annual convention is this Saturday, June 7, starting at 9 a.m. at the Best Western Gateway hotel in Romulus, Michigan. In addition to nominating our candidates for the fall election, we will elect party officers. We have two great speakers -- Our lunch speaker Austin Petersen, National Volunteer Coordinator for the Libertarian Party from Washington, DC. Austin played a big role as a volunteer exploiting "new media" and coordinating New Hampshire get-out-the-vote efforts for the Ron Paul Revolution. Our banquet speaker Shikha Dalmia of the Reason Foundation will address the controversial issue of a Libertarian "open borders" immigration policy. Don't miss it!
