Libertarian National Committee member Angela Keaton moderated a debate between Leonard Schwartz and Christopher Bennett, who are seeking the party's nomination for vice president. You can listen to the debate at blogtalkradio.com/liberatedspace. Leonard is seeking a new webmaster to help him update his website, LeonardSchwartz.us. To volunteer, contact Leonard at 248-546-3569 or Leonard@LeonardSchwartz.us. The Libertarian Party of Michigan's 2008 candidate recruitment effort is off to a strong start. Currently, 20 Michigan libertarians have expressed an interest in running for office in this Fall's general election. Earlier, the LPM's executive committee announced a goal of 100 candidates, and this represents a substantial "down payment" toward that goal. As noted elsewhere in this Newsletter, the March 7, 2008, Campaign Conference is designed to help recruit, energize, train and support LPM candidates for the Fall election. Actual nominations will be made at local affiliate caucuses and the June 7 convention in Romulus, so 20 interested candidates is an historically great start at this early date. The LPM plans to nominate candidates for all statewide and federal races, so that every voter will have a ballot of at least 12 Libertarian Party candidates to vote. In addition, the LPM plans to run candidates in as many state representative and county and local races as possible, particularly races where only one major party candidate is running, or the LPM candidate has good prospects for winning, or drawing sufficient votes to constitute the "balance of power" between the Republican and Democratic candidates. Details of the March 8 Campaign Conference for LPM candidates have been announced. There will be presentations on the following topics: Campaigning as a Libertarian. Understanding the 2008 Changes Regarding the LP State and National Conventions. Candidate Paperwork/Campaign Finance. Target Marketing Yourself to the Voters. Working With the Media. Defenders of Liberty Awards. LP Presidential Candidate Straw Poll. Lunch. Issues Made Fun With the Politigo Game. Toastmasters-Public Speaking Tips. Creating a Website. Fundraising. Lessons From the Ron Paul Campaign. While Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul has repeatedly denied having any intention of running for president in “a third party” he has also refused to promise otherwise. This was most notable in a comment to Tim Russert in his December 22 Meet the Press interview. “Don’t I deserve a little wiggle?” http://www.nationalledger.com/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi?archive=21&num=18094 After a disappointing finish on super Tuesday, and again this past weekend, many Libertarians believe it is time for him to consider a Libertarian nomination. At the same time he has restated his intention to continue on as a Republican. Some Libertarians are not taking “no” for an answer, and plan a massive “V is for Valentine” push on February 14th. The Libertarian Party takes no official position on this candidate at this time.
