  2. At Large LEC Member to Be Appointed

After several years’ service on the Libertarian Party of Michigan Executive Committee, Will White recently resigned. At its meeting on February 3, 2008, at the Lansing office, the LEC plans to select a replacement to serve the balance of his term (through June 8, 2008) as an At-Large Member of the LEC. The LEC is seeking a passionate and responsible libertarian eager to pitch in and work hard and well with others to make our party a success. Any LPM member interested in the appointment should submit their request for appointment and a resume setting forth their qualifications to LPM Secretary Emily Salvette at salvette@umich.edu no later than Wednesday, January 30.

  3. Libertarian National Committee Report — by Emily Salvette, LNC Rep-Region 3

At its meeting in Charleston over the weekend, the LNC did two things having to do with the Ron Paul presidential campaign that you may have already read about. First, it unanimously approved a resolution about Ron Paul, which can be seen at http://www.lp.org/media/article_545.shtml. This resolution is most decidedly not an endorsement of Ron Paul for president. It is kudos to someone running a spirited campaign that defends liberty on many fronts (but, of course, not all). It encourages him to run for our nomination if he doesn’t get the Republican nomination because a competitive presidential race is critical to our success as a party. We urge all candidates serious about liberty to seek our nomination.

We also passed a motion authorizing the use of our get-out-the-vote tool Ballot Base by Ron Paul volunteers to make phone calls in his behalf in the New Hampshire primary. This will allow us to identify people who might be interested in the Libertarian Party in the future. Ballot Base will also be opened for other LP presidential candidates who are running in pre-nomination primaries.

Admittedly, these are bold steps, but we’re an underdog and need to go long once in a while. I see them as strategic actions taken to increase our outreach to potential Libertarian Party voters, volunteers and donors. They also show that we live in the real world. There is a significant opportunity out there with these Ron Paul folks; we would be foolish to let it slip by us.

In other action in Charleston, the LNC approved a budget projecting $960,600 in revenues and $859,800 in expenses (exclusive of ballot access) for 2008. The LNC also voted to disband the Advertising and Publications Review Committee because they felt it was micromanaging the staff. However, Executive Director Shane Cory said he will continue to consult with former APRC members to ensure information coming out of LPHQ accurately reflects our platform.

As always, I welcome your comments and questions, and thank you for the opportunity to serve as your representative on the LNC. Contact me at salvette@umich.edu
