The Wayne State Political Science Graduate Student Organization (PSGSO) would like to sponsor a panel addressing third parties in Michigan. We are hoping the LP will send a representative. I realize this does not give you much time, but we would like to host the event Monday, Oct. 30 (afternoonish). We would host the event on campus and be responsible for promotion. I am also extending invitations to the Greens and Socialist Equality Party. Roughly we would like the reps to address: party ideologies; why the need for third parties; electoral successes or lack thereof; future of third party movements. Contact by email.

  4. Creswell waits to join Devos and Granholm in Debate: Denied — by Scotty Boman

Gregory Creswell, Libertarian Candidate for Governor, waited outside the WXYZ studio on West Ten Mile Rd. in Southfield in case Governor Granholm and Republican Dick Devos developed the courage to invite him in. They did not. Creswell said “I was there an hour early. I gave WXYZ a chance to show that they have more Cajones than the other stations to host debates. As a Libertarian, I respect the right of WXYZ to include, or exclude, anyone they want. As a viewer, I demand a more honest broadcast. One that tells people that there are five, not two, people on the ballot for governor.”
Creswell went on to say, “The issue put before voters, on the surface, is “jobs.” But the underlying issue has been honesty. The Republicans and Democrats both accuse each other of selling out Michigan jobs. The issue than becomes who does one believe, in a word versus word mud-slinging contest?” Creswell’s Running-mate, Scotty Boman, says, “The fact of the matter is, we can’t even trust the news organizations to honestly report facts concerning the Gubernatorial race. When Greg Creswell’s name was included in a Survey USA poll (in August), he got 6%. Meanwhile Newspapers and TV stations with access to these results, lumped those percentage points in with undecided. This is a lie. People who vote against the two party system have decided. We aren’t asking for an endorsement. We are just asking for honest accurate Journalism.”
Honesty has also been an issue with ballot initiatives. Opponents of proposal 2 have impugned the honesty of petitioners. There has been no balanced discussion of this matter in the debates because Granholm and Devos both oppose proposal 2, which would ban some forms of State-sponsored racial and sexual discrimination. Creswell addressed this matter in a radio interview on the WHFR-FM program The New WHFR Journal (Friday 13th) : “In gathering signatures for the petition in January, February, and March, I ran across a whole host of people. They read the words and signed it freely. All this hubbub about fraud is just a ploy by those who want to continue discrimination.”
In comparing the major parties Creswell noted, “They (Democrats) have a tendency to want to play Mother to the citizens, and the GOP wants to be our father. We (libertarians) don’t want the power to control your life.” Boman added, “We believe in treating people like adults.”

After waiting with some supporters outside the WXYZ studeo (Holding up Libertarian / Creswell signs and banners) Creswell and Boman Spoke at The Shelby VFW forum where they were welcome. Creswell said, "Everywhere I go I ask, voters if they beleive what they own belongs to them, and only them." Most guests agreed. Creswell went on to say that, "Libertarains believe in letting business create jobs by getting out of the way." At the same forum, Boman said, "I would like to know what part of that 10% belongs to Greg Creswell, what percent belongs to Douglas Campbell, and what percent belongs to Baghwan Deshyra. I won't commit the same lies of omission as the major networks do. I admit there are five people on the ballot for governor."

Other Libertarians spoke at the Shelby VFW forum including incumbant Councilman Andy LeCureaux (running for the House of Representatives), and State Senate Candidate John C Bonnell.
