[press release] Partisan Political Commercial Broadcast State-wide at Taxpayers Expense. Detroit, MI - Gregory Creswell, Libertarian Candidate for Governor, is disturbed by the fact that Taxpayers are forced to pay for partisan political promotions. The “Debate”, discriminated against what its host Tim Skubick called the “minority” party candidates. The well-publicized forum took place at the studios of WKAR and was broadcast at 8:00 PM, on public and private TV stations statewide. Creswell said, “First of all I am the candidate for the Libertarian Party, not the Minority Party. Libertarians have to pay the same taxes as Republicans and Democrats. As long as tax supported television exists, it should treat all candidates equally, regardless of their political affiliation.” In 1994 the Supreme Court expressed the same opinion. That was the year Tim Skubick hosted a US senate debate that was also scheduled to be simulcast statewide on public TV. Libertarian US Senate candidate Jon Coon took WKAR to court because the station was only permitting two candidates to participate in a publicly subsidized forum. The case eventually went before the United States Supreme Court. On November 7, 1994 the court let an earlier decision, in Coon’s favor, stand. The decision means Publicly funded TV Broadcasters can’t discriminate against candidates and political parties. “That (1994) was the last time I saw a real debate between top of ticket candidates!” Said Creswell’s running mate, Scotty Boman. He went on to say, “People actually got to hear a sparring of ideas and not just the same bland drivel that has come to characterize discussions between Republican and Democratic politicians. Tonight’s show turned into a bunch of mud-slinging mixed with arguments about how they will create jobs. Never questioned was the very notion that politicians create jobs. State-sponsored racial and sexual discrimination was never challenged. The fact that our prisons are bursting at the seems, with people who don’t need to be there, wasn’t discussed either.” Political discrimination was later re-established as a legal public broadcasting policy. In the 1998 case of the Arkansas Educational Television Commission v. Ralph P. Forbes, the U.S. Supreme Court, reversed an earlier judgement and decided in favor of public TV stations that wished to bias coverage in favor of some candidates over others. “This just comes to show that we can’t simply fall back on the constitution. People need to elect people who affirm equal rights.” Said Creswell. Put aside October 16th as a day of protest. The Creswell-Boman campaign will be visibly protesting the exclusion of Greg Creswell from the final "Debate" near the WXYZ studio. While we affirm the right of private broadcasters to exclude whomever they like, we don't have to take it sitting down. We need to get up and make some noise. To do this we will need volunteers. If you are interested, call Scotty at 313-247-2052. If you can't attend, you can still be part of our legion of gad-flys. Their are a variety of internet locations set up to take questions for the candidates. Post your question (such as "Why are you afraid to Debate Greg Creswell?") with these sights. This effort has already caused Tim Skubick to excuse his exclusion of "Minority" Party candidates. Perhaps WXYZ will excuse the exclusion of "Libertarian" Party candidates. While I won’t be available to help. I encourage any similar action regarding the October 10th or October 12th events. The third and final Republican / Democrat Promotional Mock Debate will be Monday, October 16 from the studios of WXYZ in Detroit. Chuck Stokes will be the debate moderator, which will be available to all CBS and ABC affiliates in the state. Questions for these two candidates are being collected via online forms at: http://freep.typepad.com/comments/2006/09/talk_about_it_q.html http://www.woodtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5459950&nav=menu44_13 http://web.wxyz.com/vote2006/debateform.html The Free Press one is good, because anyone else who goes there will be able to see your questions and comments there! Pointing them to this page or gregcreswell.org doesn't hurt. For the next week we are running our ad on the top talk radio stations in the Detroit , Grand Rapids , Lansing , Saginaw and Traverse City markets, as well as some more rural areas. If you would like to hear our ad, go to http://billhall.lpwm.org/mp3-files/billhallrev4-radio.mp3/view Our plans at this point are to devote our scarce resources to radio advertising, and to direct mailing tailored brochures to groups who we have identified as likely to vote for me based upon our active support of a particular issue that is near and dear to their heart. Unfortunately, this means that at this time we do not have the resources to respond to your many requests to provide yard signs, bumperstickers and mass quantities of generalized brochures for use in door-to-door distribution. However, we can do the following: 1. Run more radio ads, if you can help provide the funds to do so. Go to https://secure.donortownsquare.com/SSL/donate.aspx?sgst=-1&amt=0&ai=315&qs=QJ2RZ to make a secure online donation for more radio ads. 2. Direct mail the focused issue brochures we have prepared, if you can provide a mailing list for people with a particular interest and commitment to one of the following issues: a. Defending Small Business. b. Supporting Family Rights by reforming the divorce courts, the Friend of the Court and stopping the imprisonment of so-called "deadbeat" parents. c. Supporting the legalization of Medical Marijuana. d. Another issue I support for which we can develop a focused brochure, knowing we have a list to direct mail to. 3. Provide to you a supply of brochures focused on one of these issues, so you can personally provide them to your friends for whom you know the issue is important, and a principal determinant of how they will vote. Thanks for all your support. With your help, we’ll take out Mike Cox on November 7.
