  2. Full LEC Elected at Convention — by Scott'y Boman

After struggling through a year with half an LEC, the Libertarian Party of Michigan now has a complete LEC. They are:
    CHAIR: Scott'y Boman
    VICE CHAIR: James Hudler
    SECRETARY: Chris Watson
    TREASURER: Will Tyler White
    MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR: Jim Allison
    DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR: David Raaflaub
    NEWSLETTER DIRECTOR: Andrew Wrenbeck
    POLITICAL DIRECTOR: Leonard Schwartz
    COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR: Tom Bagwell
Some people blamed last years officer shortage on the functional director amendment to the bylaws. For this reason a motion was made to return to at-large directors. The motion failed. This was just as well, since the motion was made on an even convention year, and we got a full LEC anyway.
In sharp contrast to last year, there were more delegates willing to serve the LEC than there were offices to fill. Steve Samoranski ran for communications director.
I have assured all interested activists that their assistance will be welcome anyway. One doesn’t need to be an officer in this organization to make a difference. In fact, many successful candidates have never even been on the LEC.
I look forward to a year of membership growth, more strong affiliates, more efficiently working information technology, more timely news reports, more Libertarians in office, and a whole lot less invasive government.

  4. Campaign Finance Reminder — by Leonard Schwartz

Attention All Candidates for State or Local Office

Even if you don't plan to spend any money, you must create a candidate committee and file a "Statement of Organization Form for Candidate Committees." You can download this form from www.michigan.gov/sos. Even if you don't plan to open a checking account, you must list a bank or credit union on line 11 of the form.

If you are a candidate for a county or township office, file two copies with the county clerk. If you are a candidate for a state office, file two copies with the Bureau of Elections.

Attention candidates for the state legislature: You file this form with the Bureau even if your other candidate forms were filed with the county clerk.

The deadline for filing this form is June 1. If you miss this deadline, your name will still appear on the ballot. But the government will impose a large daily late fee.

If you are not sure whether you filed this form: Candidates for a county or township office should check with the county clerk. Candidates for a state office should check with the Bureau of Elections; if this form was filed with the Bureau, you can find it at www.michigan.gov/sos.

Congressional candidates: Don't register with the Bureau of Elections. If you plan to spend more than $5000, register with the Federal Elections Commission.

For more information, see my articles in the special candidates edition of the Michigan Libertarian.
