  3. The LP of St Clair County Joins Ballot Drive — by Mark Byrne

The LP of St Clair County has joined in the collection of signatures for ballot initiative to Reduce the Cost of Government by switching to a single house, minus the state senate. This will save about $50 million the first year, over current costs, and $1 billion over 10 years. County Chair Mark Byrne has volunteered to be the coordinator for the St Clair County. This idea is extremely popular as 56 out of 58 voters I have talked to so far have not only signed but have said it was a great idea. The other two said they needed to look into more but it sounded good so far. 8 have taken petitions with them to get more signatures from family and friends.

This has been a great outreach tool. The idea of the politicians facing the job cuts for a change or the elimination of wasteful government spending is a great opener. The closer I use if you like this idea you should look into the Libertarian Party as we have all kinds of simple ideas for eliminating waste. This has often led to further conversation and a chance to hand out literature on the LP.

The unicameral legislature will eliminate the duplicity of the present house-senate system in which both chambers represent the same populations. (In contrast, U.S. House Representation is based upon population, the U.S. Senate on geography.) Also, their duties and responsibilities are identical. They are redundant!

Another benefit is that it will make a more transparent and accountable legislature. The present system, for example, allows for bills to eventually be decided by a conference committee of the house and senate, a small number of legislators who often work in secrecy.
