The Tri-City Libertarian Party will be hosting a booth at the Midland County Fair the week of August 15-21 (10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.). We will be in building #2 at the County Fairgrounds (US-10, Eastman Road exit). This fair is very well attended, so we invite anyone campaigning for a state-wide office to join us. A photo, at least 8"x10", and campaign literature to pass out would be appreciated. If you would like to participate please e-mail Jozie@mail.com or call Rae at (989) 922-5226 with the date and time you will be available. We would like to have as many candidates as possible at the booth throughout the week. Don't forget to get your tickets for the LPM State Picnic on August 22. A ticket request form can be found at http://www.michiganlp.org/news/lpmpicnic04.html. Our guest speaker will be Vice-Presidential candidate Richard Campagna. The picnic usually receives press coverage, so it is extremely important that we have a good turn out to show our support. This is a rain-or-shine event. We have rented a very large pavilion, and there will be a lot for the kids to do -- skateboarding, playground, horseshoe pits, and a ball diamond (but no swimming pool). The picnic lunch, itself, is well worth the price of $8 for adults and $4 for children under 10. An early ticket purchase would be appreciated. To reserve your tickets, send a check made payable to: Tri-City Libertarian Party We are also looking for an affiliate to host this year's Liberty Fest. The event is usually held the second Saturday following the general election. The affiliate hosting the event will have help from volunteers, if needed. This is an ideal opportunity to spread the Libertarian message and get some press coverage in your area. If your affiliate is interested, please e-mail me ASAP (Jozie@mail.com). Anyone wishing to nominate someone for a Libby Award may send a letter stating who you are nominating and the reason you believe this person should receive the award. The categories for the Defender of Liberty Awards are: * Producer of Liberty (a dedicated, behind-the-scenes Libertarian whose quiet labors over the years exemplify the backbone of the Libertarian Party) * Promoter of Liberty (given for doing the most to promote the LP and Libertarian Principles) * Spokesperson for Liberty (a member of the community whose patriotism and conviction have inspired contributions to the cause of Liberty) Letters of nomination can be sent to: Nominating Committee c/o Mike Donahue A deadline for nominations will be announced at a later date.
The Libertarian Party will have 65 candidates across the state of Michigan this November, but according to Michigan’s Secretary of State Office, Michael Badnarik and Richard Campanaga will not be among them. Badnarik and Campanaga were nominated for President and Vice-President respectively, by the Libertarian Party at the National Convention in Atlanta, Georgia on May 30, 2004. Even though the Libertarian Party of Michigan does have ballot status, state law requires that the party submit the names of all nominated persons by the end of the next business day after the conclusion of the convention. The office of the Secretary of State claims that no notice was given before 5:00 pm on June 1. The State LP is working with the SOS on this, and is hopeful that a waiver will soon be granted and our candidates will be on the ballot. In an attempt to remedy this problem, the Executive Committee of the LPM has voted to "hold a special convention on Wednesday July 21, 2004, at 7:30 PM, to nominate and confirm candidates. The convention shall be held at the state office conference room at 913 W. Holmes Road, Lansing, MI. In the event that prior to the convening of this convention, the Michigan Secretary of State accepts the names of the candidates who were selected at the LP national convention for placement on the November ballot, this convention may then be canceled at the discretion of the LPM Chair." It is the intention that the special convention confirm the nominations of Michael Badnarik and Richard Campagana. Those names will be submitted, along with any other state representative nominees, to the Secretary of State’s office before 5:00 pm on July 22 to comply with the letter of the law. In the possibility that the SOS changes its position and renders a decision favorable to the LP, the special convention will not be necessary and may be canceled. Any cancellation or change will be noted on the LPM web site at http://www.michiganlp.org/ and on the LPM office telephone at 1-888-FREE NOW.
