"Almost Banned Movie Night." A Libertarian Party of Oakland County fundraising event. Join us for a viewing of "Harry's War." "Harry's War" is the comedy/drama about a man who had finally had enough. Harry Johnson (played by Edward Herrmann) handles his tax problem like any sane patriotic American...he declares war on the Internal Revenue Service. It isn't for hate of paying taxes, but love of and defense for his "Aunt" Beverly (played by 1986 Oscar winner Geraldine Paige), who is being unjustly harassed by the IRS. Suggested donation: $10/person. This movie was released in 1981 and almost immediately withdrawn from the theaters. The stars were audited in an apparent effort to further suppress it.
Location: LPM Headquarters in Hazel Park. 619 E. 9 Mile Rd., Hazel Park.

  2. Congratulations to Ken Howe!

Ken Howe, a member of the LPWM, has earned a Lights of Liberty Award from the Advocates for Self-Government for 2003!

The Lights of Liberty awards were given by the Advocates for Self-Government to libertarians who accomplished any one of these three vital outreach activities:

3 or more published letters to the editor 3 or more speeches 3 or more Operation Politically Homeless (OPH) booths

Ken has the distinction of being a "Libertarian Triathlon" -- winning awards in all three categories.

For more details, see the following link: http://www.theadvocates.org/lights-2003.html

Congratulations, Ken! You are an important asset to the LPWM and to the cause of Liberty!

  3. Campaign Finance Reminder by Leonard Schwartz

Attention All Candidates for State or Local Office

Even if you don't plan to spend any money, you must create a candidate committee and file a "Statement of Organization Form for Candidate Committees." You can download this form from www.michigan.gov/sos. Even if you don't plan to open a checking account, you must list a bank or credit union on line 11 of the form.

If you are a candidate for a county or township office, file two copies with the county clerk. If you are a candidate for some other office, file two copies with the Bureau of Elections.

The deadline for filing this form is May 7. If you miss this deadline, your name will still appear on the ballot. But the government will impose a large daily late fee.

(Congressional candidates: Don't register with the Bureau of Elections. If you plan to spend more than $5000, register with the Federal Elections Commission.)

For more information, see my articles in the March/April, 2004, Michigan Libertarian.
