- Secretary of State Responds
by Greg Dirasian
The Secretary of State (SOS) responded to the
Libertarian Party of Oakland County's complaint regarding
the use of taxpayer money by the Pontiac School Board to
advocate passage of a recent $455.4 million bond proposal on
the ballot.
The SOS essentially made 2 points.
First, the LPOC's complaint lacked the proper
certification statement. The certification statement used
was one that was used per the instructions of the SOS's
office in 2000 when a similar complaint was filed. We can
only assume that they have since changed the language.
Second, the law we cite does not prohibit the use of
taxpayer funds to influence a vote. The SOS's office says
the law in question "allows a public body to provide factual
information and commentary, ever if such material is clearly
biased." This is an interesting response, and leads us to
ask the purpose of the law.
You can investigate all the materials for yourself,
including a conventient link to the law, by visiting our web
site at:
http://www.lpocmi.org/NewsRels/SosLetter.php
We are considering further action.
