  2. Issues Committee by Leonard Schwartz

The LPM Issues Committee will hold its first meeting at 7:30, Thursday, June 26 at LPM HQ in Hazel Park. All LPM members are invited.

The Issues Committee has two goals:

    1. Find issues for effective marketing of the LPM and libertarianism. This is the LPM equivalent of the national party's branding strategy.

    2. Help promote proposed good changes in government policy and defeat proposed bad changes in government policy.

The Issues Committee is especially concerned with statewide issues.

  3. Senate Bill 509 Update by Leonard Schwartz

    Help Defeat Senate Bill 509

The Libertarian Party of Michigan is fighting to stop SB 509, which is a revenue bill disguised as a public safety bill. It creates a driver responsibility fee, which can be $1000 a year.

SB 509 was on the fast track in the state Senate, which has already passed it. Now it is on the fast track in the House of Representatives. It is on the agenda of the Transportation Committee meeting Thursday morning.

A good way to lobby your state representative is by e-mail. SpeakOutMichigan.org provides an easy way for you to send e-mail. A better way to lobby your state representative is by snail mail. You can copy the SpeakOutMichigan letter into a snail mail letter. The best way to lobby your state representative is by telephone. Use your state representative's office number, not home number. Calls should be brief and polite.

To find the name and phone number of your state representative, go to www.MichiganLegislature.org. Snail mail should be sent to: State Capitol, P. O. Box 30014, Lansing MI 48909-7514.

Whichever method(s) you use, please do it promptly. Timeliness is essential. It is especially important if your state representative is on the Transportation Committee.

The name, district, city of residence, and office number (usually a toll-free number) of members of that committee are:

    Republicans:

Gene DeRossett, chair, 52, Manchester, 800-645-1581

Tom Casperson, vice chair, 108, Escanaba, 866-779-1108

    Scott Hummel, 93, DeWitt, 877-859-8086

    Craig DeRoche, 38, Novi, 517-373-0827

Edward Gaffney, 1, Grosse Pointe Farms, 888-254-5291

    Joe Hune, 47, Fowlerville, 866-828-4863

    Bill Huizenga, 90, Zeeland, 866-908-4347

    Philip LaJoy, 21, Canton, 888-656-0079

David Robertson, 51, Grand Blanc, 517-373-1780

    Chris Ward, 66, Brighton, 800-295-0066

    Democrats:

David Woodward, minority vice chair, 26, Royal Oak, 866-585-2471

Ruth Ann Jamnick, 54, Ypsilanti, 517-373-1771

    John Gleason, 48, Flushing, 866-268-2914

    Steve Tobocman, 12, Detroit, 877-STEVE12

    Stephen Adamini, 109, Marquette, 888-429-1377

    Michael Murphy, 68, Lansing, 517-373-0826

    Jennifer Elkins, 97, Lake, 866-535-5467

The Transportation Committee probably will vote on SB 509 on Thursday morning. If you decide to call, do it today or tomorrow. If your representative is not available when you call, leave a message with the secretary or answering machine. Say that you oppose SB 509 and leave your name, phone number, and city, to indicate that you live the district.
