  2. Gary Nolan Visits LPM Headquarters by Leonard Schwartz

Gary Nolan, Candidate for U.S. President, Visits LPM Headquarters

Gary Nolan, who is seeking the Libertarian Party nomination for president of the United States, visited LPM headquarters on Sunday, March 23.

Although his visit was scheduled less than two weeks in advance, which left little time for publicity, 42 Libertarians attended his reception.

The event was sponsored by Small Government Alliance. Many thanks to Tim and Nancy O'Brien for organizing the reception.

Gary Nolan's radio talk show was syndicated on 65 stations. He quit his show to campaign for president full-time. His web site is www.GaryNolan.com.

There are at least four other Libertarians who are seeking the party's nomination for U.S. president.

  3. First Meeting of New LEC by Keith Wesselmann

This is listed in the calendar of events, but because Convention (which means elections) is coming up I thought it best to post a separate advisory note about the first LEC meeting after Convention.

The next regularly scheduled bi-monthly meeting is Sunday, April 13, at 1:00pm, located at LPM Headquarters in Hazel Park. If you plan on running for LEC, serving on a committee, or just want to be involved in this aspect of the business of the Libertarian Party of Michigan, please mark your calendar for this date.

  4. Notice about Saturday's State Convention by Emily Salvette, Convention Chair

We are looking forward to seeing many of you on Saturday, April 5 at the State Convention at the Eagle Crest Conference Resort in Ypsilanti. It is sure to be an exciting day of dialogue for all of us.

It has come to my attention that there is confusion about payment policy. Please note that even if you are just attending the afternoon business meeting, you are still expected to pay the meetings-only price of $30. You do not have to pre-register (although it helps), and you can pay the charge at the door.

LPM conventions have *always* been self-funded projects. That means that the people who attend share the costs of putting on the event. Last fall, Stacy Van Oast, Jim Fitzpatrick and I worked the numbers and came up with a budget. When we split the fixed costs between an expected attendance of 70 people, everyone's share came out to $30 per person. If the convention is profitable, proceeds will be put into the LPM general fund (and if it is not, the LPM will absorb the loss).

I know that because this is a voluntary organization everyone is willing to cooperate to make our endeavors a success. And I am sure that as Libertarians, each member wants to support his or her own participation without being subsidized by others.

Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday!

    Emily Salvette, Chair
    LPM 2003 Convention Committee
