  2. Townsend Campaign Speeds Up by Ghazey Aleck

Michigan Libertarians have no one elected to partisan office at the county or State level. That fact may change November 5th, 2002.

Stephen Townsend is running for county commissioner in District 4 in Midland County. This race has been targeted with two others in Northern Michigan by the Liberty Leadership Council. There have been no other requests for assistance to that PAC. The two other races are Trevor Peck in a Lake County commission race and Dennis Gargin in a Clare County commissioner race.

The Townsend campaign has about 5,000 registered voters and 3,100 regular voters in that district. Stephen Townsend and a dedicated campaign staff have been hard at work making that campaign the race to watch in Michigan.

The campaign for commissioner was carefully planned well in advance of the campaign season and Townsend's campaign was officially kicked off in March of this year. The campaign has been regularly cover by the local media since that time. Townsend has been mentioned 18 times in 7 months in the Midland Daily News.

Also, since the Townsend team campaigned during the major party primary, it picked up valuable recognition and respect. The campaign used 25 four by eight foot billboards and hundreds of yard signs to build momentum and an estimated 50,000 pieces of literature distributed in 5 lit drops and 5 direct mailings in three townships and part of the City of Midland going into this general election.

Recently, the League of Women voters held a debate and Townsend's opponent failed to show up and a front page piece in the paper covered that fact. The candidates debates with State races down appeared live on community cable and will be re-run going into the election.

Even making the race more interesting is the fact that Townsend's Republican opponent (who has unsuccessfully ran for office five times switching parties twice) refuses to campaign. Townsend's opponent says that his campaign is "faith based." That is, "if God wants me to be a commissioner, then I will be a commissioner."

So, keep an eye on this race. It continues to gain momentum and it has some very good prospects to finally break the ice in Michigan and Libertarians can claim their first major Libertarian office holder.

  3. Townsend Endorsed by Newspaper by Ghazey Aleck

The Midland Daily News endorsed Stephen Townsend over his Republican oppenent on October 25, 2002 in his bid to be county commissioner. This is the largest and most influential newspaper in the county. Midland County is a strong Republican county and Townsend is running in a two way race in a Republican District. Below is the actual endorsement:

Our view: Vote Townsend in District 4

In District 4, we believe Libertarian candidate Steven Townsend is the clear choice for voters.

Townsend, who ran unsuccessfully for the office two years ago, has demonstrated a strong desire to understand the workings of county government. He has attended county board of commissioner meetings the last three years and can speak knowledgebly about issues such as the jail proposal and the tax appeals by four major local companies.

He also is willing to clearly state his positions on issues. For example, he strongly believes Midland County needs a new jail and cited numerous hazards and problems with the current jail as the reason. He believes the public has a right to know more about the process used in selecting property for the the jail site and thus has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for the minutes of the closed land acquistion sessions conducted by the county board. He wants to know more about the decision-making process because he does not like the proposed M-20 site. And he supports building a jail large enough to handle "todays jail population" and would only expand the facility when needed.

Townsend is ready to hit the ground running as the District 4 commissioner. He has our endorsement.
