  2. Will Big Boston Media Throw Carla Howell Out of Governor's D

    Dear Friends,

    Have you ever been UN-invited?

Can you imagine what it's like to be publicly asked to participate
in a live televised debate for Governor of Massachusetts, announcing
your invitation to your friends and supporters, and then being told
    to go to hell?

Because that just might be our situation.

On August 28th, WGBH-TV (Boston PBS) faxed us a letter which opened
    as follows:

"As per our telephone discussion today, please accept this as an
official invitation for Ms. Carla Howell to appear as part of a
four candidate gubernatorial debate, following the September 17th
    Massachusetts primary."

The letter was signed "Anne Adams, Supervising Producer, WGBH."

    We officially accepted the invitation.

Last week, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), the host of the
Live Televised Governor's Debate on October 1st, called and invited
Carla Howell to participate in their debate. We accepted the offer.

WPI posted Carla Howell's name and inclusion in the governor's
debate on the WPI web site.

WPI assigned a reporter from the student newspaper to interview
Carla Howell about her gubernatorial campaign for the debate.

The October 1st Governor's Debate is HOSTED by Worcester Polytechnic
    Institute of Worcester, Massachusetts.

But it's SPONSORED by a Boston Media Consortium: WCVB-TV Channel 5
    (ABC), WBZ-TV Channel 4 (CBS), WHDH-TV Channel 7 (NBC), WGBH-TV
Channel 2 (PBS), NECN-TV (New England Cable News), AND the Boston
    Globe.

After we sent you the last copy of Small Government News, we
received a call from one of the members of the SPONSORING Media
Consortium: Ms. Iris Adler, Executive Director of News at New
    England Cable News.

Ms. Adler told us that we were "NOT invited." She further said
that "the Consortium has not yet decided who will be included and
who will be excluded from this Live Televised Governor's Debate on
    October 1st."

** Don't Let Them Throw Carla Howell out of the Governor's Debate **

    Carla Howell was invited.

    Twice.

Once by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Once by WGBH-TV (PBS).

Don't let the Big Boston Media throw Carla Howell out of the
    Governor's Debate.

Will you help us make sure Carla Howell is included?

We need you to lobby the Media Sponsors of the debate.

We need you to telephone and e-mail each of the sponsors of the
    debate. Today.

    ** Here's What To Do **

Telephone and email each of the Debate Sponsors above. Be polite
and professional - but firm. Tell them that Carla Howell has earned
the right to be included in the Governor's Debate. Tell them why.
Ask them to insist that Carla Howell be included.

    Here are some talking points.

+ Carla Howell received 308,860 votes for U.S. Senate against Ted
       Kennedy in 2000.

+ Carla Howell's Ballot Question 1 to End the Income Tax in
Massachusetts is already up to 40% in the polls. (Boston Globe,
       8/29/02)

+ 40% in the polls shows that Carla Howell already has the support
of 1,600,000 Massachusetts voters. More than the total number of
people who voted in the Massachusetts primary on September 17th.

+ 3,900,000 voters in Massachusetts have just received the Voter's
Guide which contains Carla Howell's Argument in Favor of Ballot
       Question 1.

+ Carla Howell has already run 3 full-page ads in the Boston Globe.
       1,200,000 readers.

+ Carla Howell has already participated in 7 governor debates with
the Democratic candidates during the primary season.

+ Carla Howell has already run 7 months of full-page ads in the
Massachusetts NRA's "Message" Newspaper which has a readership
of almost 100,000 gun owners in the state.

+ Virtually every Pro-Gun Leader in Massachusetts has endorsed
Carla Howell for Governor. Gun stores and gun clubs are
distributing Carla Howell for Governor Yard Signs. 10,000 Yard
       Signs.

+ In 1996, there were 3,065 registered Libertarian voters in
Massachusetts. Today, there are 20,000! If we were a stock,
       we'd be rich.

** How to Get Maximum Impact out of your Phone Call **

    - Ask for the person by name. Make every effort to talk to him or
her, not their secretary or voice mail.

    - If you get shunted to voice mail, state your reasons for
including Carla Howell in the Governor's Debate. Specifically
request that they insist that Carla Howell be included. Tell them
that you will call until you are satisfied.

    - If you get a busy signal, call back. Keep trying. Keep dialing
for the decision makers. Your persistence will win.

    - If you can't get through, check our web site for any change in
instructions. We may need to update you with names, phone #s, etc.

    - Call early and call often. All day Monday... and if you have time,
Tuesday. They have to feel the heat before they see the light. They
will have to get hundreds of phone calls before the light bulbs go
off over their heads. They will need to talk themselves hoarse
before they realize they ought to be listening. To voters, Taxpayers,
and the thousands and thousands of supporters of Carla Howell for
    Governor.

    - Your phone call to these decision makers will have 5 or 10 times
the impact of an email message. We need you to reach out and touch
    them good.

    - You are exercising your First Amendment Right to free speech when
you call and freedom of the press when you write. Don't let them
violate your rights. Don't let them tell you that you should shut
up and put up with whatever they ram down our throats.

    - When you get the decision-maker on the line, expect that he or
she will make excuses, evade responsibility, or tell you that you
are wrong. Don't back down. Firmly and politely insist that Carla
Howell be included in the October 1st Governor's Debate.

Here are a few excuses that they may give you:

    - "Carla Howell is not doing well in the polls." Here's your answer:
"The Boston Globe and the Boston Herald polls for Governor have
left Carla Howell's name off the poll. They have given people the
following "choice": If the election were held today, would you vote
for Republican Mitt Romney or Democrat Shannon O'Brien." It's kind
of hard to do well in polls you are excluded from.

    - "Carla Howell has gotten very little media coverage." Here's how
to answer: "This is unbelievable hypocrisy. The Media is blaming
Carla Howell for them not covering her campaign. NOTE: The
Massachusetts News Media has given Republican Governor candidate
Mitt Romney over 170 times more coverage than they have given to
Carla Howell. In dollars and cents, this coverage has a cash value
of between $4 Million and $8 Million."

    - "It's already been decided." What to say: "You act like it's a
matter of the sun rising or gravity working. You can't help it. You
have no say-so. No authority or responsibility. And that's FALSE.
It's your decision. It's your choice. I want you to re-decide in
Carla Howell's favor. I want you to re-choose in Carla Howell's
favor. You owe the voters an informed choice. You owe the voters a
fair and balanced debate. Will you change your mind now, and insist
    that Carla Howell be included?"

    - They may just say, "Thank you for your call. I appreciate your
opinion." This is their way of refusing to talk with you. Of
refusing to take you and Carla Howell seriously. Of refusing to
show you the respect of a conversation. Tell them that you expect
to be treated with respect and consideration. You're a voter.
You're a Taxpayer. And you will live under the Governor we elect
    on November 5th.

    - They may say, "It's too late." Then you say: "I don't believe you.
It's never too late to have a fair and honest debate. It's never
too late to give 3,900,000 voters in Massachusetts the information
they need to cast an informed ballot. It's never too late to stop
being unfair and start being fair."

    - They may pretend, "Carla Howell was never officially invited."
Point out: "Carla Howell was invited by Worcester Polytechnic
Institute. Our campaign staff had several conversations with them
to iron out details. Carla Howell's name and inclusion in the
debate was on the debate page of the WPI web site. Worcester
Polytechnic Institute sent a Reporter to interview Carla Howell
for the October 1st Governor's Debate. Further, on August 28th,
Anne Adams, Supervising Producer of WGBH-TV (PBS) faxed Carla
Howell "an official invitation" to the Governor's Debate."

Don't back down. Don't give up. Don't let them sweet talk you into
believing that there's nothing they can do. It's entirely up to them.

    ** Email Power **

Write powerful and persuasive emails to the Media Consortium
    decision makers.

Write your own email in your own words. Do not forward this email.

Do not send one email copied to all the different media outlet
decision-makers. Send a separate one for each.

We recommend you leave the subject line blank. When they start
getting a lot of emails, they may delete them without reading them
if they recognize their intent from the subject line.

They will read their email. The more email, the more explosive your
    influence.

Multiple messages are the key. Once is not enough.

Phone and email these decision makers. Hold them accountable. Give
them the facts. Give them your reasoning. Make the strongest
possible case you can for Carla Howell being included in this Live
Televised Governor's Debate on October 1.

    ** Two Small Requests **

ONE: Forward us your email messages at debate@carlahowell.org AFTER
you've sent them. (Do NOT cc us on the message. It will undermine
your effort. Alternatively, you can bcc - blind copy - us on the
    original message at debate@carlahowell.org )

If you have a moment, email us a brief report of who you called and
how many times you reached them. Please send your message to
    debate@carlahowell.org .

One person can make a huge difference. You.

One day can change everything. Today.

One person working with another person, working with another
person, adds up to an avalanche of results.

TWO: Forward this message to 5 or 10 friends and ask them to help
us make this an open and fair election.

Your phone calls and emails to these decision makers can change
everything. Please do it now. Thank you.

    small government is possible,

    Carla Howell & Michael Cloud
