  4. Here I'm Legal, Here I'm Not by Greg Dirasian

Councilman Fred Collins and Barb Goushaw held their annual Woodward Dream Cruise party at their usual site on Woodward north of 11 Mile Rd. The party is held on private property.

As is customary with many Dream Cruise parties, alcoholic beverages were served. Because the party is held on private property, this is not a problem, however, if party attendees carry their alcoholic beverages to the berm (where people traditionally sit to watch the classic cars go by) they are in violation of the state's open container law.

After receiving two warnings from the police for party attendees crossing the three foot sidewalk to the berm, Goushaw urged party attendees to remain on the private property while drinking.

The warnings caused libertarian minds to wonder as people stepped back and forth across the invisible property line saying, "Here I'm legal, here I'm not." One person asked if he could stand on the sidewalk so long as he kept his arm and drink extended so that they remained over private property.

We should note that nobody was drunk or loud or disorderly in any way, the police issued these warnings merely because they could see that the beverage in the plastic cup was beer.

It kind of makes a libertarian wonder.

  5. Howrylak Forms Friends of Aquatic Center by Greg Dirasian

When David Eisenbacher was elected to the Troy city council, one of the issues he ran on was fiscal responsibility. As a result, one of the first things that new council pursued was closing down the Troy Aquatic Center which was losing money. But the council decided that they would give the Aquatic Center one more year to prove that they are a viable public facility. There are still many people who enjoy the Aquatic Center, but not enough to make it financially viable.

To help keep those people who enjoy the Aquatic Center happy, Libertarian Councilman Martin Howrylak is leading the formation of a Friends of the Aquatic Center committee, similar to a 'Friends of' committee for libraries and other public facilities. The group will be a public advocate for the water park, Howrylak said, and would be able to hold fund-raisers for support.

This is a Libertarian solution in action. People who want the Aquatic Center to stay open are voluntarily getting together and looking at ways to cut costs and raise funds. Voluntary funding solutions will enable the center to stay open while not burdening the city or the other taxpayers who do not use the water park.
