  2. District Court Primary Results by Leonard Schwartz

District Court 45B Primary Campaign Results

The District Court 45B primary shows the importance of demographics, money, and prior name recognition.

In first place was David Gubow, who was a state representative for 14 years and had an army of volunteers ringing door bells, and who spent the second most money. In second place was Michelle Friedman Appel, who is a county commissioner and is the daughter of one of the retiring judges, and who spent the most money. In third and fourth place were the two African-American candidates. (Forty percent of the district is black.)

I thought that I could compensate for the demographics and for my lack of money and prior name recognition by walking the district. I thought that I would be the only candidate who would spend much time ringing door bells. But after I started walking the district, most other candidates started ringing door bells or had volunteers ringing door bells. I don't know whether this was a response to learning that I was walking the district or was something they were planning to do anyway.

I had time to walk Huntington Woods, Pleasant Ridge, and nearly half of Oak Park. That plus my "Common Sense on the Bench" campaign theme helped. I came in fifth place in Huntington Woods and Pleasant Ridge.

My only major mistake was thinking that the election was winnable. I now realize that even if I had spent twice as much money and had walked the entire district, I wouldn't have survived the primary.

I thank everyone who contributed time or money to my campaign.

I enjoy campaigning and will be a candidate for some other office in 2004.

    Here are the primary results:

    Candidate, Votes, Percent

    David M. Gubow, 3842, 23.17%

    Michelle Friedman Appel, 3679, 22.18%

    Gil Whitney McRipley, 2204, 13.29%

    Angela Diggs Jackson, 1972, 11.89%

    Joseph L. Stewart, 1576, 9.50%

    Richard A. Levitt, 1331, 8.03%

    Ezra N. Goldman, 879, 5.30%

    Leonard Schwartz, 715, 4.31%

    Sam Konikow, 386, 2.33%
