  2. Leonard's Libertarian Primary by Tim O'Brien

Leonard Schwartz is the only Libertarian appearing on the August 6 Primary ballot. Here is a brief Q&A about the race, and how and why you should help.

    Q. Why is Leonard Schwartz the only Libertarian candidate in Michigan running in the August primary?

    A. His race for District Court Judge is non-partisan. Leonard must finish in the top four (of nine candidates) in the primary in order to go on to the general election in November when two candidates will actually be elected.

    Q. Does he have a good chance of doing that?

    A. As a matter of fact, he does. His district consists of Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Oak Park and Royal Oak Township. He has door-belled the entire City of Pleasant Ridge, all but a few blocks of Huntington Woods, and approximately one square mile of Oak Park. He will continue knocking on doors right up till Tuesday. In addition, he has worked the crowds at his local concerts in the park, and spoken to a few local groups as well. He did two mailings to the absentee voters and a mailing will go out Wednesday to the rest of the registered voter list. Several voters recognized him from his literature when he arrived at their door.

    Q. But he has several opponents in that race, some with name recognition. What can Leonard do to give him an edge over the others?

    A. That's where you come in. Most Libertarians who have been elected in Michigan have done so by finding an angle overlooked by their opponents. The Michigan Supreme Court recently stuck down a law that prohibited judicial candidates from discussing, even in general terms, their stands on issues. Leonard's opponents have missed the significance of that ruling. They are campaigning the way judicial candidates have traditionally campaigned: They are emphasizing their endorsements and the organizations to which they belong. Meanwhile, Leonard's campaign has focused on the issue of opposing the use of speed traps as a revenue generator for local governments. His position is that police should be used to ensure traffic safety, not for shaking down passers-by. This issue is playing well with voters - even "law and order" types who nevertheless find the practice unsavory.

    Q. What does this have to do with me?

    A. Leonard needs to remind the voters of his stand on this issue when they are getting ready to vote. His campaign will therefore be distributing a handout piece at the polls, which conveys this message. He needs you to work a poll distributing these cards as voters enter their polling places.

    Q. I've never thought those handout pieces at the polls made much difference. Don't most people already know who they plan to vote for before they arrive at the polls?

    A. The majority of people voting in the primary are there to choose a candidate for governor. Most don't even know who the candidates are for district court judge unless they know one of them personally. All we need to do is give them one good reason to choose Leonard over the others. Following is mock-up of the poll card we plan to use.
    Poll handout
Unlike his opponents' lit about belonging to civic organizations and featuring meaningless platitudes about believing in "justice for all," this piece will get people's attention. Most people have experienced a feeling of apprehension upon seeing a cop pointing a radar gun at them. They will react to seeing the photo and want to read the rest of the card. It will certainly give Leonard's numbers a boost.

    Q. Wow! It sounds like Leonard has a good shot at winning his primary. Has their ever been a member of the Libertarian Party of Michigan elected to a judgeship?

    A. Nope. In fact, Leonard may be the first in the country.

    Q. How do I sign up to work a poll for Leonard on Tuesday?

    A. Contact the campaign at:
