  2. LPM Media Appearances by Ghazey Aleck

On Tuesday, March 19, 2002, Chairman Ghazey Aleck was interviewed on WION 1450 AM about the proposed Michigan Wiretapping Law. The taping was pre-recorded to be aired later in the week as a lead in to a live interview with a local Republican State Represtative. WION is out of Ionia, Michigan.

Also, on Friday, March 22, 2002, Chairman Ghazey Aleck was interviewed by the Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun that was running a story on a bill that made search warrants and supporting affidavits secret. This Bill would allow secret searches and allow searches without the police having to produce the search warrant. It recently passed the Michigan House of Representatives.

  4. Come to the Aid of the Party by Stephen M. Townsend

    My fellow Libertarians,

Help is needed in every level of the political process. This year our State party needs every dedicated Libertarian to run for office. There are three levels of dedication a Libertarian can run for a political office.

    Active candidate

    Educational Candidate

    Paper Candidate

An Active Candidate is the most fun and exciting race any Libertarian can run. This is a race where we go in and attempt to win. In the Libertarian Party this is mostly able to be done on a local level. We have already had much success electing Libertarians to School Boards and City Councils. County Commission races offer the greatest opportunity for success.

Now we can work on winning the first partisan race in Michigan History. Which affiliate will be first. I would like to see every affiliate to attempt a full flung active race. Remember, the 'Just One' plan worked wonders last year.

Although the numbers change across the state, it takes a significant amount of money to win bigger races. To be competitive you will need $ 100,000 for State Representative, $ 450,000 for a State Senate seat, and $ 1,000,000 for US Congress to even be competitive. Still much good work can be done on a limited budget.

Educational Candidates do wonders on a limited budget. Educational Candidates can shape an election and force Libertarian ideal to be represented. They also give great credibility to all the candidates on the ballot.

Educational candidates are very unlikely to win a race. However, they attend candidate forums, give interviews with reporters, have speaking engagements, debate other candidates, buy and distribute literature, door to door, buy and distribute lawn signs, Ect. In 2000, the work of former State Party Chairman Mike Corliss helped shape the US. Senate race and cost the Republican the election.

Paper Candidates help the Libertarian Cause to no end. It costs no money to run as a paper candidate. A paper candidate is one who lends his name to the party. There is little reason why every Libertarian can't at least lend his or her name to the party. If we can't recruit candidates are we really a political party.

Republicans and Democrats have been using paper candidates for years. Does anyone really think they run hard races in districts with strong and entrenched incumbents? Of course not.

What do paper candidates do? If they wish they can give interviews, attend candidate forums, fill out questionnaires, and answer questions for the press. Although, each of these is great a paper candidate need only do as much as he can.

We have set a goal of a mere 150 candidates for 2002. With this goal in mind we need to fill all the US Congress seats (15), as many of the State House seats (110), and as many of the State Senate Seats (38) as we can. There are even a few state wide offices as well.

Each of these district can be viewed at http://www.state.mi.us/dmb/mic/

You can get all the information you need to get paperwork from the Liberty Leadership Council Web site at www.makingfreedomring.com in the new candidate assistance section.

I need your help. We must start recruiting candidates now. Contact you local affiliate as soon as possible. They can help you. contact them, they will help you get your paperwork filled out as soon as possible, and let me know so I can coordinate the offices and forward their names to the National and State Parties.

Up until now, the biggest flaw in the candidate recruiting process was waiting until the convention. We can not wait and hope we can fill spots. We can not work like madmen filling out and checking paperwork into the wee hours of the night. We must get started now.

I know I can count on each of you. I will be in constant contact with each of you from now until the convention.

    Yours in Liberty,

    Stephen
