  2. Membership Drive Committee Volunteers Wanted by Ghazey Aleck

The LPM is requesting volunteers to come up with ideas and implement an outreach plan for new members.

The present plan in place deals with attempting to recapture some of the nearly 3,000 different members we have had over the last 5 years that have dropped off the rolls.

If you are interested in helping grow membership of the LPM to new heights, please contact me as soon as possible at chair@michiganlp.org.

  3. Candidate Recruitment--Just a matter of asking! by Ghazey Aleck

For those of you who are active in your local libertarian party and want to get more candidates on the ballot, just start asking people. It's that simple!

When the Libertarian Party has candidates for half of a particular legislative body, the establishment parties and their supporters have to take notice. So if you recruit candidates for half or more of your county commission districts, your local party becomes a significant threat to the establishment. This is also true on a State level for State House, State Senate and U.S. Congress.

Fielding as many candidates as possible creates momentum and excitment. It brings in more media attention, more membership, more money, and most importantly, more credibility to the Libertarian Party. This is what will put us further on the path of liberty.

"Will you let the Libertarian Party use your name on the ballot?" This is the most important question you can ask potential candidates. For those freedom fighters that hesitate, it is OK to compare a candidacy to the bravery of those who first fought for freedom in the American Revolution. "Lend your name to the cause of freedom!"

If the person is worried about winning, assure him that he won't win if he does not run an active campaign, and remind him that a political party with little or no candidates is no political party at all. In fact, without candidates, it would be like surrending without putting up a fight.

As you recruit candidates, some will become active. With other "paper" candidates on the ballot, those that are active will have a better chance since they will be running under a party banner that has added credibility by having a full slate of candidates.

As you recruit, get in touch with State Party Recruitment Chair, Stephen Townsend at president@makingfreedomring.com and/or bring them to the Leadership Conference on March 9 in Grand Rapids. The LPM will be giving out candidate paperwork and completing some of it there.

Also, there will be a committee at the LPM Convention May 17-19 in Troy, Michigan helping to fill out candidate paperwork. Remember, this is where our candidates get nominated and the paperwork must be filed with the applicable county or the Secretary of State for state offices within 24 hours of the Convention. There are about 1,000 county and state offices out there to fill this year so don't worry about getting too many candidates. :-)
