ANNOUNCING YOUR CANDIDACY
When you become a candidate, you must announce your
candidacy to the world. This means putting out a news
release to all of the media located in the vincinity of the
area you are running for office in and those that cover your
area.
You should have thought out your issues in advance
(three of them preferably) and include them in your initial
release. Some information about your qualifications and
family should also be included but only use the main items
of interest--not every little thing that touches on your
qualifications or family. Qualifications are work
experience and education that shows that you will be
professional and reliable. Also mention that you will be
seeking the "Libertarian Party nomination." The
announcement should go out about St. Patrick's Day--a little
sooner or a little later does not matter but don't wait
until after you receive the nomination.
ANNOUNCE ENDORSEMENTS EARLY
Endorsements of your candidacy should come early in the
campaign. Your county party could endorse you. PAC's can
endorse you. Gun groups and yes, even some labor unions can
endorse you. Do not rely on these endorsements except to
show that you are getting support which helps grow momentum.
Put out a news release after each endorsement. Repeat your
three issues too. Do not use endorsements late in the
campaign because some could then vote against you because
they do not like who endorsed you. Also, by then your three
issues should be the focus.
WIN THE LIBERTARIAN PARTY NOMINATION!After the
Libertarian Party Convention, you should announce how you
won the nomination of the Libertarian Party at the
convention. Use this to repeat your endorsements as well as
your three issues and to continue to grow the momentum.
Again, put out a news release on your success.
DON'T OVERDO IT
You can put out other news releases on acquiring a well
known person to chair your campaign (not a campaign manager)
or to announce dinners or fundraisers or campaign issues but
don't overdo it. Space the news release out and be careful
that it doesn't look like something that should go in a paid
ad. It has to look newsworthy. For example, you can
announce your dinner by focusing on a celebrity speaker
instead like: "Brad Pitt to speak at Smith election event."
GOOD LUCK AND WATCH FOR MORE TO COME
