  2. Gearing Up For Election 2002 by Ghazey Aleck

As we approach the New Year which will begin our approach to election 2002, I would like to offer the following suggestions for gearing up for candidate campaigns.

    RECRUITING CANDIDATES

It is important for the local affiliate parties and all LPM members to lend a hand in recruiting candidates. The affiliates should start with their active members and work outward. Each active member and inactive member should make a concerted effort to talk to family, friends, co-workers and neighbors about running for office as a Libertarian. The best way is talk first about how the LPM is trying to recruit candidates and why it is an important political statement to get involved (there has to be something out there that irks them about the growing regulations in their lives).

LPM members are the best at recruiting libertarian minded candidates. It is the person who walks off the street and wants to run as a libertarian that may not really be libertarian minded.

First ask the prospect if they would run for a specific office and then fall back to asking them to lend their name to the LPM so we have a person on the ballot for that office. Please let Stephen Townsend, LPM Candidate Recruitment Chair know the candidates recruited as soon as possible.

    CAMPAIGN KICKOFF

Most county and State campaigns for the two major parties kick off around St. Patricks Day. I suggest that Libertarians do the same. It is unlikely that we will have a contested nomination process for any office, and even if we do, we can take into account the campaigns when nominating (the same thing primaries do).

    PAPERWORK

You must file a statement of organization within 10 days of announcing your candidacy or spending money for your campaign. There are some ways around this but I will leave that for you to ask me then. This form must be filed with the Secretary of State for State Offices and with County Clerks for county offices. Check the FEC for Federal Offices. Within 24 hours of the Convention where nominations are made, a candidate must file an affidavit of identity and a certificate of nomination (and a Statement of Organization if not previously filed around St. Patricks Day).

Good luck in gearing up for election 2002 and watch for more tips from me in the future.
