- BARC Update
by Nancy O'Brien
Here’s the good news: As of Friday, September 28 we
have collected 32,214 signatures! That’s right, we have
passed the state’s required number of 30,272 and are now
working on the “cushion.” The cushion is the extra
signatures we need to insure that we have enough valid ones
to cover the inevitable bad ones that come with every
petition drive.
Congratulations to everyone who helped get us this far. But
don’t stop petitioning yet! With 18 days to go till the
October 20 final deadline, we still need 12,786 signatures
to meet our revised goal of 45,000.
Now for the bad news: Among all the peripheral damage of
the September 11 attack on New York and Washington DC was
the normal level of fundraising by the national LP. In the
weeks since the attacks the national party has received less
they used to get in single days. As a result they simply do
not have the resources to follow through on the balance of
the financial commitment they made in support of our
petition drive (we had already received a third of the
promised support prior to the attacks).
The bottom line here is that, given the nearness of the
deadline, we must assume that circumstances at national will
not improve sufficiently in the interim and that we are,
therefore, on our own to finish the drive.
It is now more important than ever that each of us gets
whatever additional signatures we can before October 20.
Also, any financial contribution you can afford to make will
help us keep paid petitioners working. Use of professionals
was, by design, a part of the last phase of our effort –
after we knew how much we could accomplish with our
volunteers so as not to spend money unnecessarily.
Unfortunately, that means that the disruption of cash flow
from national could not have come at a worse time. If you
can help us make up the shortfall, please do so by credit
card at our secure server
(https://michiganlp.org/) so that we will know
immediately how much we have available for additional paid
signatures.
Please rest assured that, despite this setback, we are
undaunted. The drive to restore our ballot status will be
completed. Libertarians like the ones listed below simply
will not be stopped!
Our top twenty signature collectors as of today:

Congratulations Jerry Bloom for breaking 1,000!
Following is the current status of each affiliate in terms
of meeting its “fair share” goals. Each affiliate’s fair
share was determined by multiplying the number of members in
the affiliate by 27. That is the number each would need to
collect for the LPM’s 50,000 signature target to meet the
state’s requirement. The first list is the percentage of
signatures collected. The second list includes both
signatures and monetary contributions.

Congratulations to the Oakland County Affiliate. Not only
did you exceed your goal, you contributed a quarter of the
entire campaign!
Come on Van Buren, you’re breaking my heart! You can get
four more signatures with one hand tied behind your
clipboard. Branch/Hillsdale, Clare/Gladwin, Lapeer/Genesee
-- you could knock it out of the park in a single afternoon.
And it isn’t too late for the rest of you affiliates either.
If you’re tired of petitioning, you can always pass the hat
at your next affiliate meeting and raise the money that will
put you over the top. Or just dig into your treasury and
get it over with. Remember: the ultimate goal is to get our
ballot status back so your affiliate can run candidates in
the next election cycle. Every signature and every dollar
you contribute puts us that much closer to victory.
The Real Stars
Did you know that in addition to collecting 1557 signatures,
Al Titran has donated $500.00 to the BARC effort? And
that’s not all. Al Titran and Rosemary Racchi spend four
hours every afternoon checking signatures, looking up zip
codes, assigning membership numbers to your petitions and
donations, and logging them into the database so you and
your affiliate will get credit for them. Every dollar and
signature you see in the tables above was personally entered
into the database by Al. If you haven’t said thank you to
Al and Rosemary lately, please make sure you do so the next
time you see them.
