  2. What's Happening in Berrien County? by Glenn Whitt, Secretary and Campaign Coordinator

The Libertarian Party of Berrien County met on 7 December 2000 and held a special election for party officers. The following were elected or reelected:

    Chairman--Ray Kirkus
    Vice-Chairman--Jay Sauve
    Treasurer--Tom Baker
    Secretary--Glenn Whitt

We are going to try to do a total revamp of our web site. Though we have a few ideas already, we would certainly appreciate any suggestions from anyone in the state LP.

Andrews University College Libertarians is organizing as a student affiliate of the LPM and is planning to be completed by December 17, 2000. They are planning to do a membership drive that will help to keep the student organization running more permanently.

We have decided to set at permanent meeting schedule for the second Thursday of each month. We will alternate the meeting places because of great distances that we all live from each other. Whenever there is a major storm, the following broadcast stations will be notified to announce cancellation of meeting not later than 1-1/2 before the meeting time:

    WIRX-FM 107 (Benton Harbor)
    WSBT-AM 960 (South Bend IN)
    WSBT-TV 22 (South Bend IN)
    WNDU-TV 16 (South Bend IN)
    WAUS-FM 90.7 (Berrien Springs MI)
    WVPE-FM 88.1 (Elkhart IN)

Contact Glenn Whitt at trombonist1@juno.com or 616.473.2764, or Ray Kirkus at pciltd@triton.net or 616.469.5856 for exact meeting location.

Berrien County Vote Percentages for the Nov. 7 General Election were as follows:

    1. Berrien County Sheriff Candidate Glenn Whitt received 8%, a tie with the Republican incumbent who ran as an independent candidate. It was a three-way race.

    2. Berrien County Drain Commissioner Candidate Tom Baker received 16% in a two way race against the Republican incumbent.

    3. Three Oaks Township Trustee Candidate Ronald Frehling received 28% in a three-way race for one vacant seat.

    4. Oronoko Township Clerk Candidate Jay Sauve received 23% in a two-way race against a Republican. The incumbent did not run for reelection.

Considering the facts that little or no money was spent in these races, and that Berrien County is a strong Republican county, it appears that Berrien County residents are more willing to consider a Libertarian alternative. These are the highest vote totals that Berrien County Libertarian candidates have ever received.

We have begun to think of educating the voting public about voting straight ticket. This is the voting pattern that killed our prospects of winning a seat. We are also planning to work on developping ways to tap into this segment of Berrien County residents that votes Libertarian.

I think we will have better luck next time!
