  3. UNDERSTANDING AND INCREASING YOUR BASE by Ghazey Aleck

Use the election results to understand your political base of support in your county. Clerks in mosts counties will give you a full copy of election results free.

To establish your base, look at the race for Board of Education in your county and divide that number by the total votes cast to get the percentage. Do the same for the Board of Trustee races for the various universities. The percentage recieved by the State Board of Education is your primary number establishing your base of support but weigh it against the other races to establish a range. Some paper candidacies percentages will also help in weighing the amount of the base for a range. Most will find a base of support of 2-5%.

This is how the R's and D's attempt to figure out if their county is slightly, moderately or heavily Republican or Democrat. They see the State Board of Education and other such races as the races that people vote their political preference(or where people lean) since there is little publicity, personality or issues involved in those races. The R's and D's have been using this for years and years. We should use it as a measuring stick for growth of support.

The goal should be to get this number above 5% preferably 10% before the next election 2 years from now. Affiliates can accomplish this in the off years by door to door contact with the public, speaking to people and dropping off lit. We should also strive to stay in the public's face by participating in parades or fairs and the like (always distributing lit).

Remember: "Those who expect to reap the benefits of freedom must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it."--Thomas Paine.
