  2. Jon Coon Gun Debate by Jim Fitzpatrick

    Fellow Libertarians,

As some of you are already aware, Jon Coon has been denied ballot access for his unwillingness to abide by yet another set of bureaucratic regulations. But he is not sitting still! While fighting this in court, Jon will also be fighting for our gun rights at the podium in our Great Gun Debate!

Jon will take the stage here in Saginaw as our Libertarian representative against Republican state senator Mike Goshka and Democratic US Congressman Jim Barcia's chief of staff, Jim Lewis.

Folks, this is a GREAT opportunity to show our support for Jon, as well as a perfect chance to reach out to disgruntled voters from the other two major parties. Can you imagine the stress these two Republicrats will feel under Jon's tremendous debating skill AND a Libertarian crowd in the audience?!? Voters will be able to see we are the only party that supports them, and the republicrats will have to answer to them!

Please, if at all possible, come to this debate. It is being held at the Bridgeport Gun Club, 3265 Roselle Rd., in Saginaw on Sunday August 20th at 2pm. Its less than ten minutes off I-75. A full course meal, featuring a pig roast, is available for only $15 at 4pm, with the debate starting at 6pm. Ghazey Aleck, former Clare prosecutor and newest Libertarian star activist, will be moderating and asking some TOUGH questions. Games, music, and trap shooting will also be available. The hall is giagantic, so rain will not be a problem. Tickets are available through me at jfitzpatrick@webtv.net, or event organizer Rae Jozwiak at jozie@webinbox.com Rae's phone number is 517-895-1146. Please let us know as soon as possible if you can attend.

My friends, you are without a doubt some of the finest people I have ever been associated with, and have supported our Libertarian events up here in the past, for which all of us are grateful. It is my most sincere hope you will come through once again, and make these politicans WISH it were them, instead of the pig, in that fire!

    Yours in Liberty,
    Jim Fitzpatrick

  4. Libertarian Party to Field 111 Candidates on November Ballot by Press Release

    8/7/00
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Tim O'Brien
    313-562-5778
    248-591-3733

DEARBORN. "America's real 'third party' will be fielding a hundred and eleven candidates in Michigan alone," said LPM chair, Stacy Van Oast. "The Reformers and the Greenies may get all the attention because of Pat Buchanan and Ralph Nader," she added, "but ask them how many other candidates will appear on their tickets this November."

The party decided to issue a special press release on the eve of the major party primary election with a complete list of the LP's nominees (attached) so that the news media will have the information for use in stories about the primary election, according to executive director, Tim O'Brien.

"Past stories about primary results have often named only the major party candidates," O'Brien observed. "We assume that this is either because the idea that we have a 'two party system' is so wide spread that reporters and commentators forget that there are in fact other candidates," he said, "or they just don't have the information readily available when they do their stories. Whichever is the case," he concluded, "we're going to deal with it by providing a complete list of the Libertarian Party candidates even before the major parties have chosen theirs."

The full list of 111 LP candidates who will appear on the fall ballot is attached.

NOTE: 110 have been certified by the Bureau of Elections. One, State Board of Ed candidate, Jon Coon, refused to sign a new form (guaranteeing under penalty of perjury that elections officials will be fully satisfied with every form he or anyone connected with any of his campaigns has ever filed) and has been denied certification on that basis. However, Coon and the LPM say the new law is unconstitutional and have filed suit in Circuit Court seeking a Writ of Mandamus to order the inclusion of Coon. The case will be heard by Judge Michael Harrison on August 16.

If you are an LP candidate who is getting bunches of surveys and aren't sure which ones are worth the time and effort, please note that this is one of the important ones (along with the one from the League of Women Voters and any Voter Guides from your local newspaper) and take the time to respond to it.
