- Libertarians fight local alcohol prohibition
by Jason C. Miller
July 31, 2000
For immediate release:
News from the Ottawa County Libertarian Party
For more information:
Jason C. Miller
(616) 669-2851
jcmiller@triton.net
Libertarian Party supports Proposal A
Local group calls for repeal of Hudsonville’s alcohol ban.
America passed the 21st amendment to learn from and
reject prohibition and local Libertarians believe
Hudsonville should do the same. The Ottawa County
Libertarian Party publicly endorsed Hudsonville’s Proposal A
at its last meeting
Proposal A was drafted by local business leader Bill
Bolt, who seeks to bring a restaurant able to sell alcohol
to the City of Hudsonville, is coming to a vote.
Hudsonville voters will make their choice on the August 8
primary ballot.
Libertarian James Lopez introduced the unanimous
resolution stating: “The Ottawa County Libertarian Party
reaffirms the rights of individuals to conduct business as
they choose so long as they do not interfere with the equal
rights of others. We believe that prohibition is a flawed
policy, proven wrong time and time again. Therefore, the
Ottawa County Libertarian Party supports Hudsonville’s
Proposal A, which repeals an ordinance banning alcohol
sales.”
Local party chair and Hudsonville resident Jason
Miller described alcohol prohibition as “Lunacy that
directly violates the property rights of business owners and
freedom of choice of area patrons and residents. Repealing
the alcohol ban is in the direct interest of the Ottawa
County Libertarian Party. It’s our chance to help fight for
more freedom and make a difference for voters at the local
level.”
Miller promised support from area Libertarians would
be crucial in the August 8 vote. Libertarians are planning
on going door-to-door to distribute fliers in the days
before the election and helping to distribute “Vote Yes On
Proposal A” yard signs. Miller described this as “the new
Ottawa County Libertarian Party’s first chance to influence
public policy here in West Michigan. We’re a brand new
organization; and whether Proposal A wins or not, we’re here
to stay.”
The Libertarian Party is Michigan’s third largest
political party. Over 100 Libertarians are on the ballot in
Michigan including the party’s presidential candidate Harry
Browne. A complete list of candidates can be found at
http://www.mi.lp.org
