  2. 18-year-old Libertarian in media

James Lopez, The Ottawa County Libertarian Party's youngest candidate, has experienced a warm welcome from the media. An energetic 18-year-old with ideals and principles makes a great story in the dull, Republican dominated West Michigan area.

WOOD radio recorded a segment on him and added it the news given to all Clear Channel stations (several in the area). The radio stations have picked up the story, but so has the print media. The Grand Rapids Press ran a nice story (view it online at http://gr.mlive.com/news/index.ssf?/news/stories/20000530glibrun30104305.frm ), and the local alternative news-weekly should have an article out this Thursday.

The Lopez campaign is now mobolizing dozens of volunteers in Ottawa County to canvass the area and get the word out. Unlike most candidates, the media has demonstrated that it will cover the Lopez campaign (it has received more coverage to date than the major party candidates in the race!), but Libertarians must get behind this campaign.

  3. Libertarian Presidential Hopefuls to "Slash the Pork" by Press Release

    5/30/00
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    CONTACT: Bill Shotey

DEARBORN. On Sunday, June 11, the three leading contenders for the Libertarian Party nomination for President of the United States will be taking the opportunity to slash the pork -- literally.

The Libertarian Party of Michigan is sponsoring a special Pig Roast fund raising event in Southfield to benefit the party's Campaign Fund.

"Most voters don't realize that our very existence as a ballot-qualified party depends entirely on how well our 'top-of-ticket' candidate does," observed event hostess and Ballot Access Retention Committee chair, Barb Goushaw . "This year that will, of course, be our presidential candidate. And since we won't even know who that will be until after the national nominating convention in July, let alone what his or her campaign strategy or funding will be," she continued, "we are raising our own campaign money right here in Michigan to buy advertising to support our candidate in this 'ballot-status' race."

Harry Browne , the LP's '96 nominee for president and the leading contender to be the party's first ever, second time candidate, has already committed to attend, as have longer shot contenders former New Hampshire state rep, Don Gorman, and Arizona entrepreneur, Barry Hess. Each of the three in turn will take machete in hand and have a whack at the giant, roast pig.

Tickets to Slash the Pork are $40 for the afternoon event and include all food, drink and games, as well as other uniquely Libertarian entertainment.

Complimentary press passes are available with advance request.

  4. LP of Oakland County Meeting Modification by Greg Dirasian

Due to the busy June schedule (Slash the Pork on June 11 and national convention beginning on June 29), the Libertarian Party of Oakland County will be combining the general membership meeting with the executive committee meeting and we will meet only once this month on June 21. We will still meet at Sila's in Berkley.

Barb Goushaw will be our featured speaker this month. She will be giving the same speech that she will give as the keynote address at the national convention in Anaheim later this month. If you can't make it to the national convention, this will be your opportunity to enjoy some of it right here.
