5/22/00 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Tim O'Brien313-562-5778 LIBERTARIAN PARTY OF MICHIGAN NOMINATES OVER 100 CANDIDATES FOR NOVEMBER BALLOT The Libertarian Party of Michigan held its annual convention in Ann Arbor last weekend nominating 107 candidates across the state for the November election ballot. Among those chosen to carry the party's banner this fall is Michael Corliss of Westland who will square off against Republican incumbent, Spencer Abraham and Democrat challenger, Debbie Stabenow, for U. S. Senate. Also nominated was Jon Coon of Carsonville, the LPM's '94 candidate for this office, who considered the possibility of a rematch against Abraham but finally decided to instead make a second run for a position on the State Board of Education along with Diane Barnes, the party's other '98 candidate for that office. The Libertarian Party of Michigan will field a full slate of candidates for all state-wide offices, as well as contesting all 16 congressional races. State Chair, Stacy Van Oast, was elected to a second one-year term without opposition. The party also made some changes to both its bylaws and platform, as well as choosing its delegation to the national LP's presidential nominating convention in Anaheim, CA, over the Independence Day weekend. "We were very pleased with the entire convention," said organizer, Emily Salvette -- herself a previous two-term LPM chair. "I haven't seen the final credentials report, but I'd estimate that there were right around 150 delegates." The Saturday night banquet which featured a debate by presidential hopefuls Harry Browne, Don Gorman and Barry Hess, drew attendance of over 200.
The LPM Convention last week elected delegates to represent the state at the national LP convention in Anaheim, June 30 - July 3 this summer. Not all of our allocation was filled, so you still have an opportunity to be a delegate! LPM Chair Stacy Van Oast was given the authority to appoint additional members to fill our delegation. If you are interested in being a delegate, please contact LPM Secretary Keith Edwards at keithmarni@aol.com or 810-777-7468.
This week's "Back-To-Back" program (5:30 Tuesday evening) on Detroit PBS affiliate WTVS will feature LPM Executive Director, Tim O'Brien, in a debate on President Clinton's proposal to have the government close the so-called "The Digital Divide." Next week's edition of the program is scheduled to feature BARC chair, Barb Goushaw, in a debate on gun control.
After Joe Bomarito, chair of the Libertarian Party of West Michigan, read that the Million Mom March would be making a local appearance, he took action. Libertarians from Ottawa and Kent County arrived at Calder Plaza to meet the marchers where they were planning on speaking. Joe was seeking to be "Visible but not disruptive" and the Libertarians pulled it off. Though only a half dozen LP members were there to brandish their flags, placards, and signs, they were clearly visible and a stark contrast to the 75 gun control supporters that didn't have an American flag among them. Not only did the Libertarians show that Americans do not all Americans want their freedom taken away, they received a nice bit of media coverage and built further connections and contacts.
Bill Gelineau, recently elected to the Libertarian Party of Michigan Executive Committee, will be leading the VBCLP's lady liberty through the Grandville Memorial Day Parade on Monday. Bill is running for state representative in district 74. Also along to get attention is the Jamie Lewis who is running for Kent County Clerk. If you would like to be a part of the parade, contact: Bill Gelineau (616) 249-9735 gelineau@iserv.net
Derek Hollemans, Vice Chairman of the Libertarian Party of West Michigan and candidate for Plainfield Township Trustee is mobilizing his campaign team for a partisan victory in 2000. Because of the recent filing deadlines, it has been discovered that only the Republicans are fielding candidates in the race for 4 at large seats. Even more exciting is the fact that only one sitting trustee is seeking re-election. This means that Derek will be facing at least 3 newcoming Republicans for the 4 open seats. With 5 candidates on the ballot, Derek needs only a 4th place finish to give the Libertarian Party of Michigan a partisan victory in 2000! The Hollemans campaign is clearly one of the most winable races for the Libertarian Party of Michigan in 2000, and Derek plans on running one of the most active campaigns as well. The Committee to elect Derek E. Hollemans to Plainfield Township Trustee would like to extend it's humble thanks to loyal LPM members who have seen this great opportunity and have donated time and resources to giving the LPM a great victory in 2000.
