  2. Take Up the Gauntlet! by Karen Corliss

The Oakland County LP has recently issued a challenge to other Michigan affiliates to beat their goal of running 10% of their membership, or 34 candidates, in the November 2000 elections. With the Wayne County LP as the second largest affiliate, and being central to the major metropolitan area of our state, how can we refuse?

National has set a goal of 2000 candidates; the Michigan LP has set its sights on fielding 160 candidates this year. Our share of this effort, or 10% of our members, is 30 candidates. Several hardy souls have already stepped up to the challenge, and declared their intentions to run, but we are still far short of the goal. Will you be one of the few, the proud, the Libertarian candidates? It can be as simple as filling out the required paperwork and answering the major surveys that will come in the mail; a great chance to express your Libertarian views to a listening audience. Or, you can make an all-out effort to win your chosen race; or somewhere in-between.

We especially need people to run for Representative in Congress and for the Michigan State House. Also available are County Commissioner seats and County Executive. If you want to win a race, try a local post such as city council or school board. Any effort at all on your part will help our visibility and credibility. Analysis of past elections shows that states with many candidates have better vote totals for the presidential race, which will be vital in keeping our ballot status.

If you are ready to answer the challenge, and be part of Libertarian Party history, call campaign coordinator for Wayne County, Karin Corliss, at 734-326-5406, or email her at krcorliss@aol.com. Help in filling out candidate paperwork will be available at the March and April meetings. See you there!

  3. Campbell Declares in District 90 by Jason C. Miller

Tim Campbell is the latest to join West Michigan's contribution to the 2000 candidates in 2000 goal. Campbell will be running as a Libertarian for the Michigan House of Representatives in district 90. This district covers the cities of Holland, Zeeland, Hudsonville, and some other parts of Ottawa County.

Campbell plans on running an active campaign with many speaking engagements. He will network with people at city, county, and township council meetings. The campaign will also focus on young people by visiting schools, colleges, and the Holland beach.

The Campbell campaign will also be a party building effort. We will use this as a tool to recruit new Libertarians and activate current members. The goal will be, with the support of the Libertarian Party of West Michigan, to have an active affiliate in Ottawa County by November.
