  2. "Beyond Left and Right"

Map showing the Southfield Civic Center

An Introduction to Libertarianism, with Tim O'Brien, Executive Director of the Libertarian Party of Michigan.

If you have been curious about the fastest growing alternative to the "politics as usual" of the two old parties, you won't want to miss this presentation by noted Libertarian speaker, radio commentator and newspaper columnist, Tim O'Brien.

Hear a concise yet comprehensive explanation of how strong support for the right to keep and bear arms and much lower taxes is completely consistent with equally strong support for medical marijuana and the 1st amendment.

Discover the profound power and plain common sense of the Libertarian ideas of individual freedom and responsibility on every issue.

Learn about our American heritage and see how abandoning it in favor of the competing special interest politics of "liberals" and "conservatives" inexorably but inevitably lead our country to where we are now.

Ask all of your questions during an extended Q&A session with the audience.

Thursday, September 23, 1999, 7:00 PM at the Southfield Civic Center, 26000 Evergreen Road, Southfield, Michigan. There is NO CHARGE, however, seating is limited. For more information, please call 248-299-5668.

  3. Apply Now for Political Leadership Training

Michigan State University has applications available for individuals interested in becoming Fellows in the Michigan Political Leadership Program (MPLP). Recently featured on “The Wall Street Journal’s” front page, the MPLP is a multi-partisan program designed to develop skills in the areas of personal leadership development, effective governance and public policy analysis and process, as well as practical politics and campaigning.

Each year the MPLP awards 24 grant-funded fellowships to individuals from across the state who are committed to community service, and brings them together to engage in an educational curriculum. Since it's inaugural class in 1992, the MPLP has graduated 230 fellows.

The program is designed for individuals who are actively involved in civic activities in Michigan. Fellows meet for 10 weekend sessions, running from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. Five of the sessions are held in East Lansing and the other five will be held in various areas around the state, including Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Higgins Lake area and Midland. Fellowships include meals, lodging, and program materials. Participants are responsible for their own transportation.

MPLP encourages applications from interested people of all ages, racial and cultural backgrounds, and political party affiliations. There are no educational requirements for participation. The deadline for submitting applications is September 10. Some applicants will be interviewed, based on their written applications. Acceptances to the program will be announced in mid-November.

Fellowships are made possible through MSU, corporations, foundations, individual and alumni support.

For additional information or and application, contact the MPLP office at 517.355.6672, ext 116. Applications are also available on the internet at www.ippsr.msu.edu.

You may also wish to contact two of our own who have graduated from the program: Mike Brinkman, brinkman@tcimet.net and Barb Goushaw, bgoush@aol.com.

Most of this information was taken from a Michigan State University press release on the subject.
