You’re Invited… LPM Affiliate Y2K Preparedness Conference Prepare for success in the Year 2000... And Beyond! Saturday, September 18; 10 a.m. ‘til 6:00 p.m.* Location: La Seniorita Restaurant, 2706 Lake Lansing Rd (decent mid priced menu and alcohol if desired); It is extremely convenient. It is right off the Lake Lansing exit off of 127. It is on the west side of the freeway. Learn the basics of affiliate operation and activism: Officer’s Roles, Fundraising, Recruiting Candidates, Answering the Tough Questions, Speaking to Audiences, and other critical topics will be addressed in a fun, interactive format. There will be an opportunity to share ideas and news specific to your affiliate with leaders of other affiliates, and to learn from their ideas and plans, as well. Each affiliate will be given time to share thoughts and to ask and answer questions. This will be a great opportunity to let other affiliates know what has worked for you (as well as what hasn't!) and to hear what other groups have been up to. It’s your opportunity to find out what's happening around the state and to be a part of it. Let others know what they can do to help -- and what you're doing to earn that help. There will also be an opportunity to find the answers to specific problems that you face as an affiliate leader. Who should attend? All current and potential future affiliate officers or representatives from each affiliate and unorganized area; all LEC members are encouraged to attend as well. Make new friends, reacquaint yourself with old friends, network, have fun! The only cost to you is lunch (order off the menu) and refreshments. Mark your calendars! Announce this event at your affiliate meetings! Encourage potential activists to attend! (Do you know who is going to replace you someday?? Bring them along!) This event is sponsored by the Libertarian Party of Michigan Affiliates Committee; please RSVP to Ben Steele, bsteele1@tir.com or 517-288-5616 (or contact him if you need more info). * Can’t make it for the full 8 hours? So come late, or leave early! We need you there!
Featuring Keynote Speaker… James Bovard Journalist James Bovard has written a series of remarkable political books and articles that have knocked the props out from under some of the biggest government policy frauds of our times. His articles have appeared in some of the nation's most distinguished magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Washington Post, New Republic, Reader's Digest and many more. Bovard is an Associate Policy Analyst at the Cato Institute. He writes a hard-hitting column each month in the Future of Freedom Foundation Foundation's excellent publication Freedom Daily. (from the Advocates for Self-Government) And… The Defender of Liberty Awards Who is eligible to win a "Libby"? Defender of Liberty awards will be presented to a maximum of four select individuals, Libertarian or otherwise, who have made notable personal efforts in the defense of liberty. Nominees must live and/or work in the state of Michigan. Three categories have been established: 1) Spokesperson for Liberty - a member of the community whose patriotism and conviction have inspired contributions to the cause of Liberty; 2) Promoter of Liberty - A Libertarian whose efforts have done the most to promote the LP and Libertarian principles; and 3) Producer of Liberty - a dedicated, behind-the-scenes Libertarian whose quiet labors over the years exemplifies the backbone of the LP. (A fourth award is available to be given at the judge’s discretion.) How does someone win a "Libby"? Any LPM member can nominate a worthy local individual by submitting a brief essay (200 words or less) describing how the nominee is deserving of an award and has worked to advance the cause of liberty. Nominations must include the author's name, telephone number and address. Send entries to the LPM, 21835 Cherry Hill, Dearborn, MI 48128 by October 10,1999. When do winners receive "Libbies"? A panel of three “distinguished” judges will choose winners. The nominating affiliate party will be notified of the winners. The affiliate should then sponsor the winner's attendance at the banquet (in other words, buy their dinner!) so they may receive their awards. The 4th Annual "Defender of Liberty" banquet is being hosted this year by Banquet Chair Diane Barnes and the Libertarians of Macomb County. The banquet will be held on Saturday, November 6 at Heinzman's Heidelberg Restaurant in Clinton Township and emceed by our LP regional representative, Ken Bisson. Cost will be $45 per person for reservations before October 15, 1999, $55 after that date. For additional information or to volunteer, contact Diane Barnes at dbarnes98@aol.com or 810-774-7611. Invitations with details on cost, times and location map will be mailed in September.
On Wednesday, September 15, 1999, a meeting will be held in Port Huron, Michigan to discuss the beginnings of a St. Clair County Affiliate to the Michigan Libertarian Party. This is your chance to help further the cause of Liberty. This is your chance to be a founding member of an organization designed to promote freedom from obtrusive government right in your own neighborhood. If you believe that our government needs a serious overhaul and a major reduction in power, then you must attend this meeting. If you are unsatisfied with other political parties, and you want to do something about it, we have an offer. A county affiliate is a grass-roots organization that promotes public awareness of Libertarian principles, educates the public and recruits and elects Libertarian candidates for public office. Since this will be our first meeting, we have yet to elect officers, set up special committees or draw up the by-laws. This meeting will be an informal “getting to know you”. We want to know what you want out of it. We want to know what you want to put into it and where your specialties lie. You may choose to be one of the officers or get involved in writing monthly newsletters. Or you may have other ideas on how to promote Liberty and want to share them with like-minded people. The bottom line is that we need you to make a difference. Do not miss this opportunity !! Join us on Wednesday, September 15, 1999, at the Main Street Restaurant located at 502 Huron Avenue, Port Huron, MI 48060. TX: (810) 984-1570. Join us at 6:00 PM for dinner. Business starts at 7:00 PM. Richard Friend, the 1998 Libertarian candidate for Michigan’s 10th District, U.S. Congress will be making a special guest appearance. Richard is also seeking the nomination for the year 2000 election. Hope to see you there !! For more information, contact Eric Wojciechowski at (810) 598-8618 or write to ewojo@worldnet.att.net
Jim McAbee advised us that Karen Scarborough died on August 10. There will be a memorial service at 11:00 AM Saturday, Aug. 21 at St Andrew Episcopal Church, 5301 Hatchery Rd., Waterford, (248) 673-7635. Karen Scarborough used to be a very active Libertarian in Michigan, until she and her husband Scott were forced to resettle in Virginia. She was responsible for getting many of us, me (Stacy) included, involved in the Libertarian Party. She served as LPM vice chair and secretary and organized many events -- a Freedom Fighter Awards banquet and a Champagne Toast with presidential candidate Andre Marrou to name a few. Also, Jim's wife Anna McAbee was operated on for cancer in May and they were unable to get it all. She is resting comfortably at home now. Cards can be sent to Anna at 229 N. Harriet Street, Romeo, MI 48065. Jim and Anna are both dedicated Libertarians and are also responsible for many of us being active in the Party. |
