- LPWC kicks off medical marijuana initiative at Art Fair
by James Hudler
The LPWC voted May 5, 1999 to begin petitioning for a
ballot initiative so that Ann Arbor voters could make Ann
Arbor a "Medical Marijuana Free" zone. The petition calls
for a ballot proposal that would prevent arrest and
prosecution and remove penalties, including court costs, for
medical use of marijuana in the City of Ann Arbor.
Individuals using medical marijuana would have to
provide evidence that they had the recommendation of a
medical care provider for use of the drug in order to
receive this protection.
The petition, presented by long-time Ann Arbor
marijuana activist Rich Birkett, also would lower the City
of Ann Arbor's marijuana fines, allowing lesser fines for a
first offense than the currently required $25 and capping
the currently open-ended third offense fine at a maximum of
$100.
The LPWC will be promoting this petition at the Ann
Arbor Art Fair, which runs from Wednesday, July 21 through
Saturday, July 24. We are currently scheduling volunteers to
help staff our booth in 3-hour shifts starting at 9am, 12pm,
3pm, and 6pm on each day. Visit our web page at:
www.mi.lp.org/wash/ or contact Nick Contaxes at 734-668-8132
or contaxes@cyberspace.org to claim your favorite time at
the booth so you can be a part of this important initiative.
