Join us and ALL of the prominent Michigan Libertarians for the last official LPM summer get-together of the millenium!

On Sunday, August 22, 1999, Libertarians from all over Michigan will invade Saginaw's beautiful Roethke Park!

The park opens at 11 am, and we'll be serving lunch hot off the barbeque grill between noon and one. Hamburgers and hotdogs and a vast array of side dishes will be featured.

The areas only all Libertarian band, "OFF THE RECORD", will take the stage and play a couple of sets, when and if they feel like it.

Your $7.50 donation covers the meal and the music. (Unless you can pass for under 12 years old, then it's only TWO BUCKS! And of course, some "just for kids" activities are planned, including a penny scramble Whooo Hoooo!!!)

New state chairperson Stacy VanOast is expected to give a few casual keynote comments, And TCLP chairman Clint Foster will serves as "cat herder of ceremonies" to the unconventional conventionists.

There will be door prizes, as well as an auction of some rare Libertarian collectors items; a raffle and yes, even our own unique Bingo game!

The park charges a nominal fee for some of their activites, should you wish to participate.

They have a pool; a train ride; volleyball courts; and a pond for fishing and canoeing.

  3. 1999 City Elections ... Hurry, Don't Be Late! by Doug MacDonald

Only city office races are on the November 1999 ballot. They are almost always non-partisan. They are the easiest races to win. Here’s how simple it is to get started:

    1) I called information for the Livonia Clerk’s phone number.

    2) Then I wasted 5 minutes wading through a long, worthless automated information system and finally just told the darn thing that I didn’t have a touchtone phone.

    3) Then I spoke with a live human being and asked:

    A) What offices are on the ballot this November? She replied: Mayor, Clerk, Treasurer, and 4 Council Seats.

    B) What are the requirements to become a candidate for one of these offices? She replied: You must be registered to vote in Livonia and bring a sponsor and $50 to the City Clerk’s office.

    C) Most cities require petitions signed by 50 or 100 voters, what is a sponsor? She replied: A sponsor is a registered voter in the City of Livonia. We don’t use any petitions. For my own amusement, I recapped: Oh, I get it, bringing a sponsor is kinda like an in-person, unwritten petition of one? She replied: Well, I guess so.

    D) When is the last day to get on the ballot for these offices? She replied: June 22, by 4 pm. There is a $50 fee for registering. And, if you want signs, there is a $50 fee required by a city signage ordinance. [Apparently, they like to include first amendment violations as an incentive to encourage people to run for office to repeal them.]

The whole process took less than 15 minutes. But, time is running out!!! If you want to beat the deadline and get on the ballot for 1999, make that phone call today!

The next time you wish to gripe about the local speed trap, the blight inspector, intrusive ‘fire,’ ‘health’ or ‘building’ inspections, etc., remember how easy it would have been for you to get on the ballot and work to end all that. What is the price of Liberty? If you don’t pay your own way, who will? There is no welfare program for Liberty.

Mayor, City Clerk and Treasurer are full-time jobs, but city council is not. You can even keep your day job!

  4. "R" Friend Indeed! by Jim Fitzpatrick

Rick Friend, running for the 10th congressional seat in Michigan, took time to visit the Tri-City Libertarian Party in Saginaw, Michigan recently.

"Wiser men than myself wrote the Constitution, but I am smart enough to have read it and understand that our freedoms are being taken away every day.", Rick told the mostly Libertarian crowd. "There is little room, if any, for 'interpretation' in the Constitution."

A lively question and answer period followed a short speech by Mr. Friend, ranging from gun control to the rigors of running an active campaign.

"The right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed," Rick told a gun control enthusiast. "I respect your opinion, but my rights are mine." Rick invited the person to read the 2nd amendment out loud, which they did. This firm but fair approach seemed to lighten a tense moment.

Rick also told the group about how he and many of us became Libertarians....by realizing that he already was one. "Harry Browne's speech on c-span showed me that there was a political party for me, and two that were against me."

The "R. Friend for Congress" campaign also has gained national attention, as publicized by Ron Crickenberger in this month's LP News. This article, as well as several others, are available for reading at the official campaign website-- http://home.att.net/~rfriend2000/main.htm

  5. Take A Break! by Jim Fitzpatrick

You've been on the road for hours now. The highway is packed with crazy drivers, with the exception on the slow-moving RV which is always in front of you. The kids are irritating you about as much as your in-laws did on the holiday. And you are certain the cop you just passed saw your Libertarian bumper sticker and is coming to get you. What do you do?

You stop in and enjoy the Tri-City Libertarian pit stop being hosted on Monday, July 5th at the Best Western hotel on I-75 exit 160! The hotel, right on the highway, gives you a golden opportunity to take a break and enjoy a few light moments with fellow Libertarians. A buffet type of dinner will be available if you wish from 6pm to 9pm, and drinks are on us.

So stop on by and relax for a few moments! I promise.......the highway will be there when you go back!
