Dear Michigan Libertarians, Would you like to be interviewed by CBS News reporter Peter van Sant on 48 Hours? Here's your chance! Peter van Sant wants to do a segment on Fully Informed Juries Specifically, he wants to interview the people who are passing out FIJA literature to prospective jurors of the upcoming Dr. Kevorkian trial on March 22. Unfortuantely, FIJA's Michigan coordinator, Mark Hiselman (markhi39@idt.net), hasn't been able to recruit people to help him pass out literature. Many of the right-to-die folks just don't feel comfortable with Dr. Kevokians recent tactics. One leafletter is not much of a story for CBS. If some of you could commit to helping Mark pass out FIJA literature from 8-9am and 12-1pm on March 22 at the courthouse, I can call Peter and let him know that he'll be able to see FIJA at work. Since the Michigan LP gave Dr. Kevorkian an award in 1992, we have a ready-made lead in to some remarks about the LP and its philosophy as well. If you know anyone who opposes Dr. Kevorkian, but is strongly committed to FIJA, ask them to help as well. We often have people on different sides of the issue distributing literature that reminds jurors of their duty to vote their conscience. If you're interested in getting on 48 Hours or just want to help out, please contact both Mark and I ASAP! Yours for liberty, Mary J. Ruwart, Ph.D. Mary@Ruwart.com
If there's a worst day for Libertarians, it's probably tax deadline day. If there's a best, it might be Patriots Day when we celebrate the anniversary of the first battle of the American Revolution and the birth of a nation based on self-governance. Well, this year, right between the two, is a day on which we can celebrate the end of tax season, honor the founding of our country, and have some fun while helping the Libertarian Party of Washtenaw County. No, not with a traditional high-priced fund-raising dinner, but with something totally new and different: It's the Sam Adams Liberty Festival on Saturday, April 17, 1999 at the Pittsfield Grange Hall, 3337 Ann Arbor-Saline Road, Ann Arbor beginning at 1 p.m. We're planning an exciting afternoon of education and fun for the whole family. You, your family, and friends will have the opportunity to learn more about the life and times of Boston patriot Samuel Adams, who is often called the "Father of the American Revolution." Through educational displays, demonstrations, stories, and songs we'll highlight America's libertarian heritage. We'll also hear speakers remark on current political issues in the tradition of Samuel Adams and the Boston Town Meeting--be prepared to be persuaded by our guest orators! For the kids, there will be games, activities, and special history-oriented projects. And, there will be food and drink provided by our Washtenaw County volunteers, several of whom are planning to dust off old family recipes to bring colonial-era treats! EVENTS - Available 1:00 - 5 p.m. * Children's activities * Historians in costume * Educational displays about Samuel Adams * Food provided by LPWCTown Meeting 1:30 - 3 p.m. Speakers include: Richard Ebeling - professor of Economics, Hillsdale College - Social Security; Steve Russell - N.R.A. Field Support Volunteer - The Right to Keep and Bear Arms; Anna Ebeling - professor of Business, Hillsdale College and former USSR citizen - Immigration; Albert McCallum - attorney and farmer- Zoning Laws Live Music 3:30 - 5 p.m. Garry Kaluzny and Friends will provide traditional music from the American Revolutionary War period, as well as traditional music from other eras such as the American Civil War. Don't be surprised if there are even a few songs dealing with such topics as the War on Drugs and the Vietnam War. In any event, it will be a good listen! (If you enjoy Garry's music, plan to stay for the Cobblestone Third Saturday Contra Dance beginning at 8 p.m. at the Pittsfield Grange. Contra dancing is the country dance of Samuel Adams's day, so this non- LPWC event provides a nice complement to the day. The cost is $7 per person, everyone is welcome with or without a partner, and its advertising promises it's "beginner friendly.") You won't want to miss this exciting day. If you purchase tickets in advance, you spend only $10 per adult or $5 for students. For kids 11 and under, it's free. Buy your tickets today using the order form at our web site: http://www.mi.lp.org/wash. For more information or to volunteer to help with this event, please call Emily Salvette, (734) 668-2607 e-mail: Salvette@aol.com. Thank you for your support of the Libertarian Party of Washtenaw County! A message from James Hudler... Dear Friend of Liberty: The Sam Adams Liberty Festival is an excellent way to introduce friends, family, or coworkers to the Libertarian Party. Our low admission price makes it easy for you to invite guests to this action-packed day. Proceeds benefit the Libertarian Party of Washtenaw County. This year, your financial support will help us provide information booths at the Ann Arbor Art Fair and Ypsilanti Heritage Festival, run candidates in Washtenaw County elections, and lobby against big government by circulating a local initiative petition. Please support this important work by ordering your tickets today. Yours for freedom, James Hudler, Chairman Libertarian Party of Washtenaw County |
