Results From the Michigan Libertarian Online State Convention

By Greg Stempfle, Chair

The Michigan Libertarian Online State Convention resembled the intro to <e>The Brady Bunch</em>.

The Libertarian Party of Michigan (LPM) will be holding its rescheduled national delegate selection convention this Saturday, April 4th, at noon EDT, on the Zoom videoconferencing platform.

The Libertarian Party of Michigan held its rescheduled national delegate selection convention on April 4th via Zoom video conference. This convention had previously been scheduled for March 14 in Grand Rapids but was postponed due to the corona virus outbreak. Planning for this event became a technical challenge as we navigated our way through a Zoom video conference and a separate polling platform. Most of the things we planned for went smoothly, a few others did not, and the usual unexpected problems happened as expected.

What worked well

With the Zoom video conferencing platform, we successfully:
  • Credentialed 95 delegates to the convention.
  • Allowed guest participation from several members of the LNC. This included opening remarks by Libertarian Party Chair Nick Sarwark, regarding the status of the national convention.
  • Caucused by Congressional District in breakout rooms and elected five new district reps to the Libertarian Executive Committee (LEC).
Congratulations to the new LEC officers; District 2-Andrew Hall, District 4- Will Tyler White, District 5-James Harris, District 6-Shane Allen, and District 13-Andrew Chadderdon. There was a new vacancy in District 10 but technical problems prevented them from electing a new rep, however the LEC appointed Jim Fulner to this position at its April 19 LEC meeting. Using the LimeSurvey polling platform, we successfully:
  • Nominated 33 delegates and 44 alternates to the Libertarian National Convention.
  • Endorsed two candidates for Michigan Supreme Court.
  • Conducted a presidential preference poll using ranked choice voting.
Below are the results of each of the three polls we conducted.

Note 1: There are 11 ties in the alternate list. In fact, more people are tied than not tied. The LEC will ultimately be responsible for determining tie breakers, however we will not make any decisions until after the plans for the National Convention have been announced and all delegates have had time to reassess their options.

Note 2: There were a few typos on the ballot which have been corrected on the list above but not in the results spreadsheet in order to preserve the names as they appeared on the ballot.

None of the Above 33.4%not endorsed

Note: This is just an endorsement. The actual nomination will be made at our July 18, 2020 state convention in Gaylord.

Results of Presidential Preference Poll using Ranked Choice Voting

The results of ranked choice elections are not so straightforward to report. It took seven rounds of ballot preferences before someone achieved a majority. The final preference was...
Jacob Hornberger 33 53.2%
Justin Amash (write-in) 23 37.1%
None of the Above 6 9.7%

The last candidate to be dropped before anyone received a majority was Vermin Supreme.

Results of Michigan 2020 POTUS Strawpoll.
Results of Michigan 2020 POTUS Strawpoll

The results were calculated using two different methods, both of which produced the same result. In the final round there were 19 exhausted ballots, if "none of the above" was counted as a candidate and eliminated after round one. If "none of the above" was allowed to reappear on each round of balloting, as it would play out at a convention, there would be 13 exhausted ballots and 6 votes for "none of the above". The results using both methodologies as well as raw results are included in the linked spreadsheet. Please feel free to check our math! I would to thank Hugh McNichol IV from RankMiVote for his assistance with this tabulation.

Convention Video

During credentialing, our attempt to live stream the convention to Facebook caused the platform to crash. However, the convention was recorded and posted to YouTube the following day.

The convention was called to order at 12:31 pm EDT and adjourned at 5:11 pm for a total time in session of 4 hours 40 minutes. The video recording begins 3 minutes after the convention was called to order, right after Nick Sarwark was given the floor.

What didn 't work well, at least from my point of view

  • Convention chair and video conference host need to be separate roles.Only the host can let people out of the waiting room and assign people to breakout rooms. Having to do this was distracting at times and I should have had someone assisting me. Several people did offer to help me in person, but because I work as a medical technologist at Henry Ford Hospital Detroit, I am more likely to have been exposed to the covid-19 virus than your average person and didn 't want to put anyone at risk.
  • Use screen sharing to list candidates nominated for office/delegate.This was so obvious in hindsight and the only part I feel like we went about something wrong. Nobody thought to have the names typed into a shared screen. I apologize to our LimeSurvey Manager, Andrew Chadderdon, and Secretary, Wendi Parker, for making their jobs harder than necessary and to those whose names were misspelled on the ballot. We could have saved a lot of time had we all been able to see the list being created in real time.

Issues with Zoom as a platform

  • Only a subset of participants are visible at any given time. The host can only see 25 screens at a time, and even fewer people on both the participant list and the list of people to choose from when assigning breakout rooms. This makes it hard to gauge the convention body at once. The participant list is often only partially alphabetized which makes it even harder to find people.
  • Breakout rooms are useful but not user friendly to manage. Breakout room assignment is difficult to do with large groups. Also, the list I pre-printed to help me assign people to congressional district caucuses was in alphabetical order by last name but Zoom alphabetizes participants by their first name (or user name).I keep thinking of ways to make an online convention work better before reminding myself I hope this never happens again. Nonetheless, we are now better prepared to handle any contingency with the national convention.I 'd like to give special thanks to Andrew Chadderdon for managing the LimeSurvey platform, to Larry Johnson, Jeff Pittel, and Norm Peterson for handling this unique registration and credentialing, and most importantly to Convention Committee Chair Jamie Lewis for overseeing this entire process. Planning this convention took many twists and turns and in the end, we all came together to pull off a successful convention under an unprecedented situation in the history of party and country.

Greg Stempfle, Chair

At the July 18 2020 Libertarian Party of Michigan state convention in Gaylord, delegates will get the opportunity to make changes to the LPM Platform. The Libertarian Executive Committee will select members of the state party to serve on the platform committee at its May 17 video conference meeting. If you are interesting in serving on or even chairing the 2020 LPM Platform Committee, please attend the video conference if possible or send a statement in support of your nomination to our Secretary, Wendi Parker, secretary@michiganlp.org and Chair, Greg Stempfle, chair@michiganlp.org by May 15.

The current platform of the Libertarian Party of Michigan can be found here: https://michiganlp.org/platform/

The delegates will also nominate Libertarian candidates for the 2020 general election. Offices on the ballot include; US Senate, Congress, State House, Justice of the Supreme Court, State Board of Education, the three public university boards, and Electoral College delegates. County, township, and village candidates may also be nominated. More details will follow in the June issue of the Michigan Libertarian. Current plans at this venue are contingent on the status of COVID-19 related restrictions.

LNC Postpones Convention. New Date and Venue TBD

By Scotty Boman, Editor

Cyberspace, USA - On May 2nd the Libertarian National Committee (LNC) met in teleconference, via Zoom, to decide on the fate of the 2020 Presidential Nominating Convention. The original venue in Austin Texas already cancelled reservations for the event, as well as room reservations for hotel guests. The LNC voted to postpone the event to a later date that would be no later than July 15th. This date limit will ensure that we will know who our Presidential nominee will be when we meet for the Libertarian Party of Michigan state convention in Gaylord. This important because all paperwork for state-wide and trans-county candidates must be delivered to the Secretary of State office on the following business day.

The LNC adjourned the meeting until May 9th at Noon EDT. On that date the Convention Committee will present their proposals for an alternative date and venue, and the LNC will vote their preference.

Congressman Justin Amash Joins the Libertarian Party, Seeks Nomination

By Scotty Boman, Editor

Grand Rapids, MI - Congressman Justin Amash has joined the Libertarian Party. The announcement has received significant coverage in the mainstream media. Also, Reason magazine erroneously announced this with the headline, "Justin Amash Becomes the First Libertarian Member of Congress." At least one other Libertarian Party member beat him there: Ron Paul. In a 2008 article, also in Reason, Paul is quoted as saying, "I remain a lifetime member of the Libertarian Party and I'm a ten-term Republican Congressman. It is not against the law to participate in more than one political party."

The Washington Times and Fox News replicated Reason 's error.

Amash coupled the party switch with a commitment to seek the Libertarian Party nomination for President. Also running are Adam Kokesh, Arvin Vohra, Brian Ellison, Daniel Behrman, Erik Gerhardt, Jacob Hornberger, James Ogle, James P. Gray, Jedidiah Hill, Jo Jorgensen, John McAfee, John Monds, Keenan Dunham, Ken Armstrong, Kenneth Blevins, Louis Vanacore, Mark Whitney, Phil Gray, Rhett Smith, Sam Robb, Sorinne Ardeleanu, Steve Richey and Vermin Supreme.

Raymond Warner (1947-2020)

By Greg Stempfle, Chair

Raymond Warner gets his Defender of Liberty Award in 2015.
Detroit, MI - On the first Saturday in April Wayne County Libertarian stalwart Raymond Warner passed away in his Detroit home after having COVID-19 type symptoms. Here are statements by a few of the many Libertarians.

Greg Stemple invited comments on Facebook writing:

Longtime Libertarian Party activist Raymond Warner has passed away. Ray, a lifelong resident of Detroit, was involved with the LP since the 1970s. In that time, he served as LPM Secretary, Wayne County Chair, ran for public office numerous times, and won the 2015 Producer of Liberty Award for his decades of service. While Ray's political activism steered away from the LP in recent years, he helped build and sustain this organization and we would not be where we are today without him.

Because Ray had been involved with the LPM for so many years, we ask longtime members of the party to please share some of your favorite memories of him!

Raymond Warner Remembered by long-time LPM activists

Tim O'Brien wrote

So sorry to hear this sad news. I have many fond memories of Ray and his hilariously droll, sardonic wit, including a time when we served together as the MI delegates to the national LP Platform Committee. His passing is a loss to the struggle for liberty.

Gregory Creswell commented:

I am very very very sad right now, I can't tell you how sad. A legend has passed away, a nice person, a fighter, and a Libertarian legend. May God bless him, his family, and his friends.

Ben Bachrach posted, "Ray was active in the LP when I joined in 1979. Some years more than others, but he was always doing something."

Friends and family

Claranna Gelineau? was a coworker with Raymond Warner long before becoming an intrepid Wayne County LP activist: "We had many moments together at work over the years. Rest in peace now my friend....."

Billy Buc reminisced:

Tom & I are the ones who painted his blue Levi kitchen and the rest of the rooms. His animals are truly missing him as I will never forget him. A sharp and kind man. He always helped if needed. I'll miss his whit and (humm) charm.

Raymond Warner's partner Tom Ayman said:

He thought he could conquer anything. So many surgeries before, and he recovered. He was like the man of steel.

LEC seeking volunteers for 2020 LPM Platform Committee

LP Groups from around Michigan have composed and published resolutions that have a common theme; a desire to have Michigan's government respect their individual rights, and a consensus that Gretchen Whitmer's executive orders don't do that.

Libertarian Executive Committee

Lansing, MI - On April 4th the Libertarian Executive Committee voted to approve the following resolution in response to the recent actions taken by Governor Whitmer.

Resolution Condemning Governor Whitmer 's Response to the Coronavirus Outbreak

The Libertarian Party of Michigan (LPM) strongly condemns the recent actions of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in response to the spread of COVID-19. We believe the governor has no authority under the Michigan Constitution to restrict individuals ' freedom of movement and association without a declaration of martial law.

The LPM does not advocate the declaration of martial law; rather we advocate voluntary participation in scientifically sound measures to prevent the virus ' spread as the most preferable solution (social distancing, rigorous hygiene, and the use of personal protective equipment). Only private citizens can achieve this through their own volition, whereas the Governor 's actions are both oppressive and incapable of mitigating the severe crisis at hand. Moreover, her actions will cause irreparable harm to the economy of the State of Michigan at both the personal and societal level. Citizens will feel this in the form of lost jobs, homes, and businesses, along with the suffering that follows.

We therefore call on Governor Whitmer to lift the authoritarian restrictions in place and restore the human rights of movement and interaction to the citizens of Michigan. We also call upon the public servants of Michigan to resist these edicts and act to protect the rights of their constituents. Most importantly, we implore the citizens of Michigan to speak out against these egregious violations of human rights and demand a return to sanity and freedom.

Wayne County

Resolution Condemning Governor Whitmer 's Response to the Coronavirus Outbreak

The Wayne County affiliate of the Libertarian Party of Michigan strongly condemns the recent actions of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer in response to the spread of COVID-19. We believe the governor has no authority under the Michigan Constitution to restrict individuals ' freedom of movement and association.

The Libertarian Party of Wayne County does not advocate the declaration of martial law under any name, not only because it is unconstitutional, but because it is morally wrong. Rather we advocate voluntary participation in scientifically sound measures to prevent the virus ' spread as the most preferable solution (physical distancing, rigorous hygiene, and the use of personal protective equipment). Only private citizens can achieve this through their own volition, whereas the Governor 's actions will cause irreparable harm to the economy of the State of Michigan at both the personal and societal level. Citizens will feel this in the form of lost jobs, homes, and businesses, along with the financial and emotional suffering that follows.

Northwest Michigan

NW MI Libertarians Call Citizens to Action Against Governor 's Order

April 11, 2020

On March 25th the Northwest Michigan Libertarians passed a different resolution. The following resolution was approved unanimously on April 10, 2020, by the Executive Committee of the Northwest Michigan Party of Michigan.

As Libertarians, we propose a call to action by fellow Libertarians as well as citizens of Michigan, United States, and the world.

Unprecedented edicts and executive orders have been issued by Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Michigan DHS Director Robert Gordon. These edicts cite public safety and concern as reasons to impose them upon us. We do not get to vote on whether or not we accept these executive orders.

16 Am Jur 2d, Sec 177 late 2d, Sec 256 states: The general misconception is that any statute passed by legislators bearing the appearance of law constitutes the law of the land. The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and any statute, to be valid, must be in agreement with the Constitution. It is impossible for both the Constitution and a law violating it to be valid; one must prevail.

The time has come as citizens to enact our constitutional rights with the following actions:

  1. Support each other in times of crisis and promote love and compassion for those who are affected by this virus;
  2. Be responsible and follow the medical recommendations regarding the spreading of the virus;
  3. Be vocal against these executive orders when communicating to others, and on social media;
  4. Write our governor, attorney general, and state representatives and tell them that these orders are unconstitutional and unacceptable;
  5. Peacefully protest at city squares, capitols, county offices, and other public venues to show we will not stand for the abuse of power and disregard for human rights and civil liberties;
  6. Bring legal action against the State of Michigan in regards to these edicts, specifically regarding EO 42 of 2020/

It is time we take a stand and stand together in unison for our freedoms.

Straits Area

written up by Dana and approved by the Executive Committee of the Straits Area Libertarian Party, here is the text:

As libertarians, we propose a call to action by fellow libertarians as well as citizens of Michigan, United States, and the world to practice civil disobedience in the eyes of tyrannical government.

Government officials take an oath to support and defend the constitution of the United States as well as their state constitutions against all enemies foreign and domestic. Well, our enemy is not only this virus "pandemic", but also the tyrannical government that is using the fear conceived from this pandemic to seize control and power over the people. Our legislators have refused to perform their job in this time, as they have refused to show up for work and and willingly given even more power to the governor with no concern to the needs of their constituents.

16 Am Jur 2d, Sec 177 late 2d, Sec 256 states:

The general misconception is that any statute passed by legislators bearing the appearance of law constitutes the law of the land. The U.S. Constitution is the supreme law of the land, and any statute, to be valid, must be In agreement. It is impossible for both the Constitution and a law violating it to be valid; one must prevail.

Unprecedented edicts have been issued under executive order by these elected officials as if they are the rulers of us and we are but subjects to be ordered and ruled over. These edicts cite public safety and concern as reasons to impose them upon us. We get no vote to say whether or not we accept them.

The time has come as citizens to enact our constitutional rights and act in civil disobedience. This means:

  1. Defy edicts in place while promoting non-aggression as they assume their power to detain, arrest, confine, silence, and enact other forms of aggression against us. Self defense is not an act of aggression.
  2. Peacefully protest at city squares, capitols, county offices, and other public venues to show we will not stand for their abuse of power and complete disregard for human rights and civil liberties.
  3. Bring legal action against the State of Michigan in regards to these edicts, specifically regarding EO 42 of 2020.
  4. Be vocal against these measures on social media.
  5. Support each other in times of crisis and promote love and compassion for those who are affected by this virus.

It is time we take a stand and stand together in unison to our oppressors.

Gregory Creswell Makes News

One person who took a stand is Wayne County Libertarian Gregory Creswell. He won a Defender of Liberty Award in 2006 for his high-profile campaign for Governor, last Thursday he made some news protesting the incumbent. He appeared in a video portion of a story by WXYZ Channel 7 Action News, and was quoted by the Christian Broadcasting Network:

No one, especially a politician, has the right to devalue an individual by labeling them non-essential.
